It's always fun to come back and build something powerful. Sometimes its fun to try the harder difficulties and get squashed. The DLC offers a nice change of pace, and you can toggle which of them are active for any given run.

This game can be challenging, but also forgiving. I got into some slug fests when I took a poorly-selected team into some fights, but I was still able to pull them off successfully. Positioning matters. It's always a dance between getting out of the way of attacks, being in the right place to hit the enemy, and using defensive skills to just tank the hits. I did die a few times, including the final boss fight. I was able to come back some time later (shortly before writing this) and remember the combat flow well enough to beat that final boss sequence without anyone falling below half health. The story was engaging the entire time. I expect I will play it again some time.

Fun game you can get lost in on that "one more turn" philosophy. It's cats. It has tooltips. You can run it alongside video calls to which you don't really need to pay attention.

I originally played this back in the free weekend several years ago, where I sank a couple hours getting my versus rank up. I picked it up about a year ago, but wasn't coming online at the right times to catch anyone else for versus mode. If you buy it now, don't expect much activity in online versus. If you have friends who want to play, you have a pretty good shot at matching together.

Where I've gotten the bulk of my hours is arcade mode. This is a fun, quick mode that really scratches the itches I get from older arcade games. I play it when I have only a short time, but then it's too addicting and I may play longer than I planned. It works pretty well with a keyboard, but I prefer the controller for the smoother movement.

I recommend this if you have friends or just like arcade shooters.

I have a habit of playing select games repeatedly. Star Renegades rewards that behavior, as you unlock things to vary your missions each run. It can take 4+ hours per run, which is long for a roguelite, but short for an RPG. The combat and graphics are totally worth it!

It has a good campaign, albeit hard in some places. These days I mostly pick it up to smash the AI in the arcade. I'll be sure to come back when the upcoming free DLC drops!

Figuring out which dwarf you need for what can be a bit clunky, but it's overall pretty good. About half way through the story, I swapped to LEGO: Lord of the Rings, which other reviews said was better. LotR is better in most regards, but it doesn't have the depth to the Middle Earth quests that The Hobbit does. I recommend picking up a hard copy if digital distribution hasn't resumed when you read this.

I played Stellaris first. Then I tried this, and didn't get into it. If you have time to get up to speed, buy it. If you hate learning curves, don't buy it. I got my money's worth from the included portion of the soundtrack. (I think there's more tracks in the DLC.)

If you liked Starbase Commander, you will still like Lightspeed Edition. It's better.

Going in, I was slightly worried about the UI re-skin. When Interstellaria (my previous favorite Steam game) changed the UI, it resulted in a bunch of bugs and acted more as a side-grade in atmosphere. Halcyon 6 didn't have those problems. The new skin looks more hi-tech and more polished. It feels like an upgrade.

Officer progression keeps getting better. I remember the days when you leveled up and got to pick one of four powers to upgrade. Starbase Commander gave you more control over which power to upgrade, and gave you a nice interface to plan with. Lightspeed gives you a whole skill tree to explore, with more than just power upgrades. (Bonus XP from combat, anyone?)

Legendary officers used to feel like the officers you built your strategy around just so they wouldn't be useless. Now, you can customize which character, class, and epic power you get, so they fit into your strategy. There are now 15 different epic powers to choose from, instead of the 6 we had before.

Before entering combat, you can now choose which powers to put on your ships. Combine that with the boost to the base chance of inflicting status effects, and combat feels more fluid and less "spam that one power." The new prestige classes also add exciting new powers that can change things up a bit. Does your ship spend a lot of time in Critical Condition? Use Dimensional Inversion on it to boost damage output tremendously! (Or use Guard Ally so that it can't die...)

For all of you concerned that content was removed to shorten the game, never fear. Waiting until you had enough resources for that shiny new hanger or ship wasn't content. The only things that were removed were forced grinding (you can still grind if you like doing it) and two Ground Combat healing powers that aren't needed anymore. Every science officer will have a healing power, no matter how hard you look.
