KOTOR 2 is one of the most important works in RPG gaming in the medium's short life. It has dynamic character interactions, a melancholic narrative of a dying galaxy, fun min-max gameplay systems, and well realized worlds and characters not seen much in Star Wars.

It's necessary to play this game with the Restoration Patch, a community developed patch that's designed to fill out the initial release's lack of content, and fix up the numerous amounts of bugs present in the game. There are also numerous mods released by the community which can help immerse you or help turn it into the game you want.

This has one of the best stories in Star Wars, with logically consistent character motivations, intricate plotting and weaving of the different characters themselves, and easily one of the best uses of a blank slate protagonist in an RPG. The writing also feels more mature than the first game, where dialogue would often come across as childish and binary. There's granularity in the dialogue, not always clear cut good/bad outcomes, even though it still occurs often in the story. All this is elevated by the masterful compositions of the game's soundtrack, utilizing low, loud brass and light, delicate strings and woodwinds to show off the foreboding evil of the villains with the former, and the delicate compassion of the heroes with the latter.

I love this game, and if you give it a chance, I think you will too.

This is a great program to learn 3D animation. Valve has not really supported this since 2012 (still somehow in beta) so it's in dire need of updates to all aspects of its UI and workflow. It's also not well optimized so you'll probably need a stronger than average computer to do advanced stuff.

Team Sonic Racing

This is a very challenging, enjoyable racing game. It is, however, let down by its small scope, misleading and unfair difficulty, seeming lack of support, and an unnecessarily complex upgrade system.

The Cast

In these kinds of games, the cast is very important for fans of the franchise in question. Unfortunately, Sega or Sumo had decided to not continue using the greater Sega library for characters, instead reducing its cast to just Sonic characters, and not always ones people care for. The roster is very reminiscent of Sonic Heroes' cast, exchanging Cream the Rabbit for a group of Chao for Team Rose (Chao Garden game when, Sega?), and replacing 2/3rds of Team Chaotix with Silver the Disappointment and Blaze the Cat so they can hang out with Vector. They also include Dr. Robotnik, Metal Sonic, and for some reason Zavok from Sonic Lost World for a villain's team.

The cast is fine, but feels lacking for a game that seems to be celebrating Sonic's wide cast of characters. Zavok is an odd inclusion given I don't know a single soul who likes or cares about him, and replacing the Chaotix with Silver and Blaze seems to be for their benefit instead of Chaotix being ignored. Why they find another character and have two teams for both fans is beyond me. Simply, the team composition is questionable.

Gameplay

Speaking of, the team mechanics are the major addition to the Sumo-Sega racing franchise, making players focus on working together as a team. It helps set the game apart and it is very well implemented, at least between 1 player and 2 AI partners. You can help slow players catch up, pass items to help partners move up in the race, and gain points towards a massive team attack that will allow all three members to take over the race. Each character also specializes in an ability to help stand out and obtain special items unique to their type. Speed characters (Sonic, Blaze) can drift to destroy incoming projectiles in a pinch, Tech characters (Tails, Silver) can drive over rough terrain and have overall better handling, and Power characters (Knuckles, Zavok) can destroy certain pieces of the environment and destroy track obstacles in their way. The composition works well in single player, but I have heard stories of online play being dominated by speed characters.

Admittedly, they do seem the most useful, with power characters feeling the least useful or viable for competitive play. Further, a good half of the tracks don't seem to take advantage of this, throwing small sections of rough terrain for tech characters or the odd enemy or obstacle for a power character. Given the game has many older tracks from the other Sumo racing games, this is understandable to a point. I think more time should have been spent remixing those older levels for these new abilities.

The game does also have 1 on 1 racing but the game doesn't seem designed around this kind of racing, so I wouldn't buy this game if you want that kind of racer.

Story and Presentation

The game comes with a story mode which I honestly did not care about, so I ended up skipping it. I'm not a huge fan of the modern Sonic cast, and certainly characters like Knuckles suffer from some pretty bad performances. They also continued the annoying trend of in-game dialogue from Sonic Forces, where characters never shut up during a race. Thankfully you can mute in-race voices.

Graphically the game is an improvement from past Sumo-Sega games, with some excellent art direction and environmental effects. The game does also come with Denuvo which at the time of this review has not been removed and is, what I can only presume, the reason I seem to get very haphazard performance when racing.

Music

The music in the game features the return of Jun Senoue as lead composer. Senoue was responsible for the loved Sonic Adventure 1 OST (done in tandem with the equally talented Fumie Kumatani) and Sonic Adventure 2. He had his band Crush 40 provide the themes for not just those games, but this one as well, with the somewhat tepid Green Light Ride. The soundtrack overall is excellent, with Senoue collaborating with Sonic Mania composers Tee Lopes and Hyper Potions, Richard Jacques, and a Japanese chip-tune artist named TORIENA on several songs. The soundtrack does also feature recurring Sonic composer Tomoya Ohtani contributing songs as well.

The music has something for everyone, and is arguably Senoue's most diverse soundtrack since Adventure 1.

Extra Bits

Probably the most annoying thing about this game is the use of a gatcha like system to unlock upgrades for your character's cars. You must first earn tokens through racing, then deposit them into a surprise capsule on the main screen. These prizes are also randomized, but I never had an issue getting reliably frequent upgrades for characters. It is frankly more tedious than it needs to be, and gives the impression of a vestigial MTX system that was scrapped to save face. I am glad they ultimately opted to use MTX, but it leaves the game with a tedious upgrade system screaming to be more streamlined.

Another issue is the game's difficulty. I recommend everyone play through the story mode on Normal, because Hard and above are insanely punishing. I played through several worlds on hard mode, fighting against an incredibly unfair AI that had power characters routinely move faster than Sonic, a speed character. The rubber banding in this game also ensures the player can never reliably overtake opponents, making the game unfortunately feel more luck based than skill based like previous Sega racers, where you can gain a good lead on other racers through very efficient racing. The gimmick races like checkpoint and traffic are all fine if very tight, and do test your mechanical knowledge of the game.

The End

I recommend this game to anyone looking for a kart racer that offers a different experience to something like Mario Kart or even the prior Sega racers. This game unfortunately feels like it will not be supported heavily post launch and is let down by its reduced scope and budget for more racers and tracks, but for what is here, it is a good time with AI or with friends.
