Great game; fantastic art and great music. The soundtrack itself is 5 hours long and it's so good that I listen to it in other rally racing games. The cars handle well and it doesn't feel unfair/impossible to be good at. One gripe I have with it is that you can't cut corners aggressively or recover your mistakes yourself; the game automatically resets without your consent.

I'm done with this game. After 25 hours of playing it, I just can't see myself recommending it despite the brilliant things it has going for it. Let me be clear; the story is interesting and I really do wish the rest of the game allowed me to finish it. The first 10 hours of the game are brilliant; they set up the story and the mechanics, and I really wish the rest of the game followed suit in supporting it. The story is this: you're an invader not by choice but by necessity because the rest of humanity in our home galaxy is getting ruined by an alien invader, so an expedition is sent to another galaxy to save humanity, but we meet aliens there whose territory we need to take over to ensure the survival of humanity, and the 3 factions that Earth sends each have different opinions on how to go about that. Honestly I think that's a great starting point for a story about galactic conquest and conflict, and the game nails that aspect really well. If nothing else, it's a unique setting and interesting setup for a story.

But, no. I'm playing this game on 'normal' difficulty and it constantly throws a wrench into my progress. Even after the 'happiness rework' patch, happiness trends towards zero periodically because my energy just spikes to negative (no clue why - the game doesn't provide the tools to figure that out) which ruins my empire as systems revolt and are given randomly to enemies or allies (!!! - you can't easily take systems from allies so if that happens you basically lose them forever unless you can get a good trade going (difficult/impossible)). This biomass thing shows up and ruins the galaxy. I enable Cheat Engine and start editing my save games to save my progress, and then the game decides to spawn in an entirely new enemy faction (the Unhor Free State) which instantly and without warning capture 8 of my systems literally inside of my core systems, forcing me to defend those and give up territory on the frontlines, allowing the biomass faction to take over 75+% of the galaxy, completely ruining my defensive front lines and putting gaps and holes all throughout my empire. How am I supposed to deal with this!?!?!

This entire game is all about a universe that hates you, and I think I do kind of enjoy that story, but the gameplay and story events makes it seem like the designers hate me, too, and these story beats have made it impossible for me to finish the game after 25 hours even with Cheat Engine and savegame editing, so I think I'm done. I would accept this in a roguelike game that I play for sessions that max out at 2 hours, but I can't see myself taking the learnings from 24 hours of playing this game into a new session that lasts more than that. The game has showed me at least twice it's more than happy to throw in random, unpredictable, completely devastating events that take hours in real life to manage, and I am not sure how many more it's going to throw at me.

I really do wish this game played better. There's a lot of things to love and the story does seem like something I want to finish, but the mechanics just get in the way which makes me sad. Perhaps the designers need to tone down the Biomass faction (which suddenly appears) and give players more agency over how they scale their empire (I was limited in the number of 'useful' settlements I could have by virtue of limited amounts of Governors. which made it impossible to feed my frontlines with powerful enough fleets). Maybe automate fleet management a bit more once you've taken over almost half of the galaxy, and throw in more habitable worlds and colonizable worlds as well as governors to make it easier to establish more predictable and defensible pockets of human civilization. There's a research tree which at the start of the game seems to suggest that you'll be able to settle on anything, but I exhausted the tree after about 15 hours and sadly most of the galaxy was still barren and hazardous (which ruins your fleets).

Maybe I played this wrong? The game seemed to force me - storywise and mechanics-wise - into a 'nemesis' galactic reputation, which basically makes any alien faction hate you. I didn't want this, but the Biomass faction was so aggressive that I had to defend against them and push them back, which made everyone else hate me...

Other reviews mention bugs. I did play this game after most of those had been fixed, but one particularly major one - which was patched during the time I played the game - did affect me: the inability to clean up biomass in star systems, because the UI element for it was not displayed at all. From going through the help options I did realize quite quickly that I was dealing with a bug, and so I reloaded my save and ensured biomass never got a foothold, but the existence of such a major game-breaking bug (biomass existing in a system makes it impossible to use it for anything productive) does make me wonder whether I was impacted by others

What a shame. Honestly, the first 15 hours or so of this game were great and I really did think it had a leg up on other games like Stellaris, because of the story, dialogue, and player choice (offered initially at least) in how the story progresses. It reminded me of the excellent Imperium Galactica from 1997, and I wish I could see the story through. But as it stands, after getting to the final objective in the game and spending 10 hours trying to complete it, I'd probably play AI War 2 or Stellaris instead.

(♥♥♥♥ the Ankhorum and their creation; I think they really ruined things for me)

A great little plane that's nice and nimble. Never a bad time flying in it, honestly, even solo. Just don't load it up with heavy armament. Most fun in multiplayer with someone else; dogfights and canyon runs especially get very exciting when you can split roles and have another player help you evade a bogey on your tail.

It's a good game with really satisfying combat mechanics, but you'll likely want to keep ramping up the difficulty level or try different classes to stay interested in the game for a longer while.

It's a chill, slow game with some interesting characters and nice cinematography. The main difference with the first game is that this one has a bit of a "revolving door" of characters, but I didn't mind that at all.

It's a very well polished, stylish game. Quite difficult though; I have not managed to finish it yet :)

The AH-94 attack helicopter has really turned out to be my favourite VTOL VR airframe. It takes a few hours to get used to it, but once you learn how it works and how to trim it prior to takeoff, it's incredibly satisfying to fly, and very nimble in close quarters. Whilst you can take a copilot with you, this is not strictly necessary if you maintain your distance or have teammates in jets around willing to bomb anything you mark with your laser.

Neat little puzzle game that's very well made, looks great, and has some interesting mechanics. The puzzles themselves aren't too difficult, so the game never feels frustrating. A big part of the enjoyment of the game is exploring the beautifully crafted worlds and trying to figure out what you're supposed to be doing. I recommend skipping the trailer (it shows too much) and going in as blind as possible.

Incredible depth made accessible.

I've always wanted to play a modern combat flight simulator, but the thought of purchasing hardware, setting up my system, trying to remember the keybindings, and learning mechanics and aircraft has always put me off, so I've stuck to WW2-era flightsims instead (IL-2).

VTOL VR has the depth I've been looking for, whilst being accessible. Learning the aircraft boot-up procedures is easy; there's not too much to tweak and toggle before you're ready for flight, and the fact that you just need to operate a bunch of virtual buttons - without having to remember the keybinds you have for them - makes it easy to jump back in after a couple of months. Flying and basic combat maneuvres are learned within an hour. Advanced combat maneuvres and advanced systems follow whenever you're ready for them. Multiplayer is there for you when you want to fly with others and learn the really challenging things, like how friendly missiles show up on your Missile Warning System and which callouts you have to make over radio to let friendlies know (that's the reason why pilots say things like "Fox Three" over radio; it's not just to sound cool!). The community has been very friendly and supportive, teaching me some new tricks and useful callouts.

If you like figuring out how intricate (computer) systems work, and you like operating vehicles or machinery under stressful situations, then this game is worth checking out. Learning how the various weapons sytems work and then using them in combat scenarios is incredibly rewarding, and there's plenty of fantastic quality player-made workshop scenarios available for you to dig into.

EDIT: 90 more hours of playing later, I still stand by this review. In fact, I'd say the game is even better now! Weather effects in particular have really added to the atmosphere, and all of the DLC aircraft are fantastic.

This is a very well polished, actively developed, well-featured game, with excellent gunplay. Guns feel nice, and their recoil is manageable, fair, and does not feel fake or arcadey. The game has low time-to-kill, thereby rewarding accurate aim. Out of all of the VR Multiplayer FPS games that I've played, this is the one I would recommend the most, as it has the most complete package of them all that's excellently polished throughout.

Contractors is free from many of the frustrations that other VR games have, as inventory management and gun operation is made to strike a balance between accessibility and realism. Weapon operation mimics real-life weapon operation, but you don't have to be super precise with your input: as long as your hand is roughly in the spot where it needs to be, and you move your hand roughly in the way you're supposed to (e.g. when sliding a bolt), the game performs the action you probably intended to perform (push a new magazine into the rifle in order to reload it).

Visually, the game looks great. Performance-wise, it runs very well and starts up quickly. Sound ain't the best, but it's perfectly serviceable. Now that the game has been out on Quest and there's cross-play for PC, the playerbase is there for me to always be able to find and join an existing game (I'm in Europe), but if I can't or want to play something different, there's always bots and singleplayer missions.

Though the singleplayer and co-op missions are quite basic (simple "move here and capture this point" or "defend the VIP" missions, without any set-pieces) and pale in comparison to the singleplayer campaign of games like Zero Caliber, they're quite fun regardless, and helped a lot by the excellent gunplay and rather interesting AI. Since the AI actually tries to hide, and occasionally rolls out of the way, you're kept on your toes and can't cheese your way out of easy kills, making these missions not feel like a boring slaughterfest.

Modding support was added back in May, and though sadly mods can't cross-play with Quest currently, the many mod maps have really brought some fresh life into this game. Some maps have been created by players from scratch; others have been painstakingly converted from other games. Overall, most of these modded maps play well and look nice, with a few standout ones that go all-out on environmental effects.

It's been pretty interesting to see how much has been added to the game, and how much the game has improved, over the last 9 months alone. It was a great game a year ago, but it's even better now, and now that there's a steady population playing it it's one of my go-to games for a quick shootout. 100% recommended.
