An excellent exploration of the Sonic cast in a unique setting with a unique plot. My only qualm is that Sonic really died and I don't think this will be canon.

I waited eight years, and it was worth it, but I want to see some more work done on it before I'm satisfied.

I didn't come in expecting a AA experience, to say nothing of AAA. I came in expecting the work of an extremely small team that had to restart development and deal with real life.
I wouldn't say I was disappointed overall; the nature of your character is a solid mystery with a reveal that you actually have to earn separately from just accomplishing the signposted tasks. The music and sound feel professionally produced, there's more animation than I expected, and the overall gameplay mechanics are both distinct and fun.

The core of the issue is the game's pacing. I played on the intended standard difficulty under the promise of getting some kind of extra reward, and it was almost never easy.
On one hand, a big challenge of search-action/Metroidvania titles is empowering the player without making them so strong as to remove any challenge, and this game averts that. The blaster's heat system is distinct from other titles in the genre and, while I love the way it plays with subweapons and badges/equipment, I also love how it enforces a mindfulness in combat that highly-punishing damage gives me more artificially.
On the other hand, the difficulty expects you to die once or twice to many bosses, and the sense of accomplishment never undoes how it feels when that slows the game down. Grinding quickly becomes an absurd prospect with experience requirements inflating rapidly, and stations for leveling up being spread out too far. Most games in the genre have a traversal move that's impractical for combat but great for distance, and I think the only way to improve the pace without dismantling the game's systems would be adding something similar.

So like, yes there's a BIG low to this game, but it's only so impactful because of how well the rest of the game tends to operate. Aside from nitpicking the outdatedly-slow dialogue system and what appears to be an unfinished NPC questline that wasn't fully removed, the game's a delight. I'm poor as balls and not sure $20 fits now, but with some tweaks it'd definitely be worth a replay and earn its value. I recommend if you're really into these titles, Metroid, and/or are willing to wait for some updates.

Unfortunately, the game has launched in an unstable state. Load times for startup and regular maps can be upwards of five minutes long (15 for campaign), the game's performance is markedly poor on older hardware when compared to other current releases. The game doesn't finish loading the main menu before letting you use it, causing the game to hang on most selections, and attempting to load a map can sometimes appear to fail for multiple minutes before showing a loading bar.
My first moment of gameplay triggered an automatic death to the first level failing to load properly. Once the game crashed midway through the level, I was faced with another 10-20 minutes of loading to resume or asking for a refund. I chose the latter; wait another six months or so for patches and a discount.

As a third-person-shooter; there is a humongous variety of playstyles available. Essentially all "playable characters" can traverse great distances with ease, creating expansive combat sandboxes that frequently involve manually launching into the air, bouncing off walls, and either firing/swinging a weapon or using a power.
But while the core game often still revolves around randomly assembled batches of pre-built rooms pulled from location-specific "tile sets", there have been two large open-world areas released in the past few years. Recently, a large ship-piloting mission type has been added, involving multiple players taking on a variety of roles aboard a spaceship in various combat scenarios. Complementing these large and dynamic (respectively) expansions on what the game can do, has been an increased focus on traditional storytelling via quests that eventually include dialogue choices.
Warframe is, above all else, praised by most for offering all sorts of content, lore, variety, and imagination, alongside a payment model that can easily be circumvented by engaging in the community, or by merely paying a reccomended 15 dollars one single time to buy progress-boosters as you get further in the game and discover knew ways to potentially grind.
One more tip; as you progress through the story quests, the dimensions surrounding the core gameplay continue to expand. Elaborating makes it easy to spoil; don't rush to finish the quests, but make sure to save up some spare resources/currency before completing them, since they tend to give access to all sorts of unexpected kinds of content.

Regarding Free2Play: You can truly access much of this game's content without grinding, and so the incentive to pay money is remarkably low. There's also a "prime" selection of items that require parts and blueprints from a certain kind of mission that semi-randomly doles them out, and you can easily trade these crafting components with other players for the premium currency (a smartphone app makes it easy to list an item for whatever price).
The developer is also a company known for its generous attitudes and business practices, so the fanbase, including myself, tends to be proud in supporting them :)

Fantastic old-school RPG that alleviates much of the tedium of old turn-based games by basing the actual mechanics in a real-time environment that only pauses as you make decisions during a character's turn and during special attacks. Unlike Final Fantasy games of the time, this is a true real-time environment where positioning factors into the time it takes for characters to reach each other, for which targets a spell can hit, etc. Core to making this system work is that various actions can take various amounts of time to prepare before initiation, during which other actors can use an interrupt action to reset or cancel that prep time.

On top of the combat system being so surprisingly engaging, the game has a pretty rockin' soundtrack, a very above-average dub for the time (only a notch or two below today's standards), and a really fun story that's pretty easy to follow. The story also takes advantage of how linear the game is to be exceptionally well-paced. Not too much in the way of filler content, and plenty of fun, engaging, and sad moments.

Definitely worth a revisit as of 2019, especially with the increased porting polish the game has recieved this year after almost two decades. Please check this out!
