Still fantastic, the best non-combat flight simulator out there. Can't speak for the 2024 version as I don't have it and kinda feel I don't need it when you have 2020. Does it have glitches, long load times on startup? Yes. But it's massive in scope so you kinda expect that. Perfect game for the casual flight sim fan.

My final recommendation after 2+ years, dealing directly with every update to the game (which wipes your saves btw), is that the devs don't have a coherent vision for what this game should be. I say devs, could just be 1 dude. I'm saying this being an absolute lover of the first game, literally one of my favorite boomer shooters to date.

This game tried to do too much and just has no coherent personality.

Maybe in another 2 years when it's finished I'll consider coming back to it pending positive reviews for the full release. But I think I'm done for now. I suggest waiting for the game to fully release before putting money into it.

I really don't get the hate this game draws from reviewers. Even though it's very positive, you see rage reviews about suffering and grinding. I guess since I started playing in Jan. of 2023 I have the benefit of years of patches, fixes, updates, etc.

When you start out you will be playing bots and only bots, it seems this way for maybe the first dozen battles (assuming you start at Tier 1 and haven't bought high tier tanks). I confirmed this with a friend who started (restarted the game after years) that yes, you're in bot battles to start. I think they do this to ease you into the game because well, the bots are not that experienced and you'll get guaranteed kills in your first few games which is encouraging. From there after your battles you'll be playing more real players (probably new players) that are mixed into your team and the opposing team but still with bots. I think it took about 20/30+ games for me to get into dedicated 15-15 human player only games. That might also be because I upgraded to Tier 2-3 tanks.

Combat is difficult, it's a shooter with a lot of skilled players. What do you expect? Yeah I main a Pz III J and I'll come up against KV-1 and T-34-85s, Tigers, Panthers. Yes in a 1-1 dual with any of those you'll lose. That's the point, you see who your opponent is on the map and you strategize how to approach them. If I'm in a Pz III J, and I see heavies ahead, I don't charge in head first, I stay back, support my heavies, or try and flank and get pot shots on their engines, etc.

The whole game is strategic, you use the tools you have, and make decisions based on what you see on the battlefield. I really don't know what people expect. It's similar to any hero shooter where you have tanks with massive amounts of health, bigger guns, but... they move slower, can be flanked, can be sniped.

It's a shooter people.

Puzzle-Wargame brilliance.

Yes it's a puzzle game wrapped up in a pretty looking wargame, but that's what makes it awesome. You will lose battles, then try again with another strategy, another direction on the map, or realize you need to buy command points, river crossing upgrades, etc.

Most complaints about the game are that there's usually 1 good solution to every battle/puzzle. That's mostly true, however if you enjoy figuring out that solution through trial and error, then you'll enjoy the game. If you are the wargamer who expects to win every battle you start then you'll be frustrated.

This sequel improves on the first game in every conceivable way. I think it has become my all-time favorite military TBS, and I've been playing them since the 90's.

For some reason, the UI in this 4th iteration is slower and more clunky than TOAW III. I can only think of a few complaints I had about 3 and it (TOAW3) was the pinnacle of this series. I'm not sure why they took what was close to being perfect about 3 and tried to create a new UI interface, that again has numerous graphical bugs (screen refresh problems, portions of the map that get stuck under the UI and move with it).

Heck, the background of the landing screen of the game is the wrong aspect ratio, I mean did any of the developers/testers notice this when starting the game? This is seemingly easy to fix from a developer point of view, because I do it all the time in Apps I work on.

The gameplay, to my knowledge hasn't really changed from 3 to 4.

What I do like:
- Larger UI buttons
- Larger text throughout the UI
... and that's about it.

What I don't like:
- sluggish movement of the map with the mouse. The arrow keys move the map more smoothly but who uses arrow keys in a PC game any more? I probably used arrow keys in the 90s, but I don't recall. Thus the mouse should (like EVERY OTHER STRAT game) smoothly move the map around. I really don't understand why moving the mouse to the 4 directions doesn't carry out the exact same command as left,right,up, down arrows, that should be possible right?
- Numerous UI screen refresh issues. Too many to list out, they're in about every aspect of the game.
- Lack of tutorial. There's a tutorial scenario but no instructions on what to do when the game starts. If you want to learn to play this game:
-Read the convoluted manual.
-Watch hours and hours of youtube videos to pick up the basics. Read the Matrix/Slitherine forums, ask questions, etc.

Conclusion:
If you can get a copy of TOAWIII on ebay, get it. It's a shame that game is no longer available digitally from Matrix/Slitherine.
Get this game if you can deal with the graphical glitches/jankiness.
Get this game if you don't mind getting a minor degree in TOAW.

Having a great time playing this game for the first time ever. I'd recommend watching some basic playthroughs to pick up things along the way, like quill18's playthrough. Once you get the hang of the mechanics and learn the hotkeys, it's a fantastic game.

Works great now. This is my second purchase of the game, bought it when it was broken on Windows 8/10, got a refund from Steam, but now it seems fixed. 2 things, first set the resolution to 1920x1080, second turn the filter off (video settings both) and you get the best experience. Glad this finally works! This is the only way to play Raiden Fighters series if you're not an Xbox owner (me).

This is the FPS multiplayer game that started it all for me. I've been a Quake fan and pretty much kept to just Quake over the last 18 years because of these series of games, no other FPS has interested me. This is a must own if you're at all an FPS fan. Not only that, there are free mods/source-ports out there like ezQuake that take this game into the 21st century, and there's still active online matches 24 hours a day. My play time is extremely low because I immediately started using ezQuake which no longer registers Quake as running by Steam.

Doom was generally known as the beggining for ID but this game took competitive FPS into a new realm. I never looked back at Doom after Quake came out, and played Q1 and 2 all through college, played 3 after graduating, still playing with college friends, and now I am active with Quake Champions.
