Personal 10/10, GOTY contender.

Helldivers is a masterclass in all of the categories it walks itself into. It's an astonishingly well-made horde shooter on both of it's fronts (Both the flashback-inducing robot front and the bug front), with a fun and streamlined progression system that lets even the freshest of players stand their ground on the middle difficulty levels while still leaving space for "Meta loadout optimisation", no predatory monetisation mechanics, distinguishable cosmetics earnable for free, an incredible atmosphere topped off with an amazing dev team that's apparently also willing to stand up with their community against their own publisher's BS.

The only personal gripe I've had with this game so far are small bugs (And sadly I don't mean the Terminids) and a general feeling that some if not most weapons might never become usable beyond Difficulty 6, which is a shame because pretty much all of them are fun.

EDIT: This comes AFTER PlayStation has backed off of their PSN BS.

Enjoyed MW2 2022 enough to dump 300 hours into it. I don't plan on buying MW3 at all, seeing how the annual release system worked out for it. Shame.

The short review: Some of the best gameplay, well worth the price of admission, with a healthy dose of copium for the upcoming 3 more seasons too, but lore fell flat on it's face in campaign.

The long review... Oh boy, here we go.

Destiny 2 Lightfall has a weird spot in my heart. The penultimate expansion in the Light and Dark saga didn't start off on the right foot - Clearly apparent by the "Mostly Negative" tag showing up for the first time since Curse of Osiris, I believe. A rating I wholeheartedly disagree with, yet understand where it came from. Anyway, here's my take on the Neon-shining, Strand-weaving, Bombastic 80's action movie-styled DLC which takes us to Neomuna.

======= The Story =======

(Soft spoilers ahead, avoiding any bombshells)

The campaign story casts us diving into Neomuna, the Hidden City on Neptune, with the sole task of stopping Emperor Calus from reaching the Veil, securing it and allowing The Witness to use it against the Traveler. We team up with the two Cloudstriders, Rohan and Nimbus, the protectors of Neomuna, and discover Strand - The threads that bind the universe together.
Sounds like a great premise, right?
Sadly, the story falls flat. The stakes are never fully explored, for example, "what is the Veil", "why does it hold the power it does", and "how our enemies can use it", the titular "Lightfall" fells more like a Light Hiccup, and with no real consequences for the story (save for a few characters), the campaign enclosed on it's own seems to be more of a filler episode of an action anime, than the full-scale action movie people expected after Witch Queen. That isn't to say the story is unforgivable and bad. It's just mediocre, and that's a bad spot to be in for the expansion leading up to The Final Shape.

The story after the campaign seems to suddenly pick back up again... IF You stick around and look for it. The patrols, the exotic quest (Secrets are back, baby!) and many more, all seem to breathe good storytelling back into the Expansion, but it might not be enough and I hope it's not too little too late.

As a small side note, I still haven't gotten into the story of the Raid, but from what I've heard from outside sources, it's amazing, so fingers crossed for that.

======= Gameplay =======

Lightfall brings two major game changes to the Destiny universe. A new subclass, and the build system reworked.

First off, we have the new Strand Subclass and element.
Acquisition: "Lightfall" Campaign completion | Upgrades: Strand Meditations (gained through using strand, generally)
Small note: I have only played the strand Hunter and Warlock. If You're a TItan player, You may want to look for better opinions elsewhere, but from what I've seen, the new Super is busted damage-wise.

Strand is pretty nuts.
We have
Weaving (Creating objects), Unraveling (killing enemies recently afflicted by Strand), Tangle (An orb left behind after an enemy has been killed WHILE affected with Strand), Suspend (CC which locks enemies and stuns Unstop Champions, in PVP a slow that lifts enemies off the ground and puts them in 3rd person), Sever (decreasing damage output of an enemy), Woven Mail (DR in PVE, no protection against melee or headshots in PVP though), and then finally, Threadlings, our newest minions.

On the Hunter side of things, the main takeaways are instant reloads, infinite grapples and insane Crowd Control. I personally use FR0ST-EE5's to constantly have my dodge loaded and available, which in turn allows me to Strand Dive and Suspend (Crowd Control) masses of enemies indefinitely, but I've seen people running The Sixth Coyote,

On the Warlock side of things, the two main schools seem to be either Necrotic Grips + Osteo Striga combo, which, if set up correctly, gives the user incredible ability regen, incredible CC and a really impressive Super regen, or the Threadling Swarmer, who with the insane ability regen, seeks to spawn swarms of green little explosive helpers who help dispatch any threats to their master.

From my experience so far, both classes have potential to be insane in endgame content PVE and have the benefit of being unreasonably fun to play and experiment with.

The strand weapons so far feel pretty underwhelming, not to dissimilar to The Witch Queen's first craftable weapons (the Father's Sins, for example). They're not bad, they're just very... Specific. They come with very obvious trade-offs, the only real exceptions being the Volta Bracket sniper rifle and the Circular Logic machine gun, these two feel really amazing and show the true potential of Strand for me.

The new and remastered modding system brings a lot of changes. Some good, some bad, and some that make me really hopeful for the future.

First off, You'll be pleased to hear - We have a dedicated "modding" screen, which is accessible to everyone who A) knows how to press an arrow > or B) knows how to navigate a menu with their mouse / game pad, where You can see and adjust every single mod currently on Your character and their weapons.
Secondly, You'll notice all Your favourite mods are gone. Powerful friends? Gone. High-Fire Energy? Decimated. Font of Knowledge? Well...

The current armor charge system really heavily favors people who were used to playing with the wells of light system, but sadly it also seems to really streamline the impact of Your modding on Your gameplay. I can't really say where I sit on the changes done here, but a lot of people do not appreciate this change, and would wish for allowing the players some of the creativity in their builds back. One thing I can say, however, is that I think this change is a good sign of what's yet to come. WIth new mods hopefully somewhere around the corner, the modding system rework really seems like a massive QoL change. I just wish we didn't have to pay for it in so many mods, forever lost to time.

It's also worth mentioning the changes to certain strikes and activities. Feel free to look up what happened to Proving Grounds, Lake of Shadows, Arms Dealer and the Inverted Spire, but generally, there seems to be a trend of "bringing difficulty back to Destiny", to quote the TWABs.

======= A short segment about the beeps and the boops =======

The Audio and Music teams both outshine themselves once again, creating such incredible bangers time after time after time again, it's getting really boring even mentioning this in a review. Every single time a new or reworked subclass or a new weapon show up in the game, the first thing most people notice isn't the sound... But with time, You notice the crispy explosions, You notice the incredible pieces of music the campaigns drop... And this DLC isn't any different.

As a side note for anyone who wants comparisons, "Tyrant Overthrown / Desparate Measures" is the new "Insurrection". Fight me.

======= Post-campaign activities, Season 20's first weeks, the Raid =======

After You wrap up the campaign, You have four major things to do;
- Grind out Neomuna rep, between exploration, the three exotic quests (Void MG, Strand Sidearm, Heavy Glaive) the new Terminal Overload Three Stage Public Event (on a daily, 3-part rotation as well), and the Partition Weekly activity...
- Dive into Season 20's weekly story and new Battlegrounds
- Take on a resurrected evil in the new Root of Nightmares raid
- Find the new AVALON hidden exotic quest

All of the above are absolutely amazing and give tons of content to have fun with.

The game's an absolute banger.
It has:
- Some of the best OSTs in the industry I've ever heard
- Some of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen in any media,
- Some of the most addictive gunplay I've ever experienced in an FPS
- Some of the most satisfying abilities
- An epic story spanning a lot of different themes, characters and locations
- Various exotic raids and dungeons with unique rewards
- A lot of drip
- Some of the best DLC & Seasonal content the industry has to offer...

... Oh, and also DCV, as well as incredibly terrible New Player Experience (which is supposedly changing next year). Which sucks for any Release & Year 1 content owner.

10 hours into the game, and I already had people screaming "Get me to the choppa"
10/10, would play again.

Edit:
2000 hours into the game. Easily one of the best games I've ever played, even depsite it's shortcomings.
