ATLYSS is an excellent game.

The controls are very satisfying and snappy. The music is comfy. And the Nintendo 64 era aesthetics form a very pleasant and nostalgic art style that I can’t get enough of. But most importantly of all, the gameplay is just fun.
There is great value in doing something simple well, and ATLYSS encompasses that idea as its core. It doesn’t break any revolutionary boundaries, because it doesn’t need to. It understands that we are all standing on the shoulders of giants when it comes to Video game development and so, instead of trying to jump over its own head, it looks back on the past for inspiration.

The Developer of this game loves video games. There is no other way to describe it. Despite ATLYSS being only roughly 25% complete at the time of the writing of this review, every inch of it oozes a deep and profound understanding of what truly makes video games fun. I have lost count of the great and many sources of inspiration that I noticed during my multiple playthroughs. The primary and most obvious ones come from its art style of course. Castlevania 64. Ocarina of Time. Medievil. And many more.

But it’s the core gameplay loop and the many little details that composing it that hide the true genius and passion-filled inspirations within this project. Once you dig a little deeper, you start to see combat elements from excellent action RPG’s of the past the likes of Dragon’s Dogma, Diablo and Demon’s Souls.

Dodging, parrying and blocking, stunlocking opponents to prevent them from fighting back. All of it is there and polished to near perfection, while still retaining a fair degree of challenge, since the enemies tend to attack you simultaneously with no restraint, forcing you to constantly reposition yourself and use the environment and every resource you have to your advantage if you want to succeed without excessive grinding for gear and levels. Mastery is suggested and rewarded, but does not leave unskilled players out to dry like games such as Dark Souls and its many contemporaries are known for.

The game’s precise and excellent controls call back to the best platformers both of old like Mario 64 and new Like Hat in Time. It is fun to just move around and explore the game’s overworld and dungeons, looking for secrets and just examine the various set pieces that feel like they come straight from Unreal Tournament or Jedi Knight.

And the last major source of inspiration comes from old MMORPG’s. Phantasy Star, World of Warcraft and Guild Wars veterans alike will instantly recognize the familiar skill layout bound to a row of numerical keys. (Which can be rebound to anything at will, but first impressions matter.) However, unlike the MMORPG’s mentioned, the game is not constrained by the stiff gameplay of those titles, as mentioned previously. It’s all fast paced, fluid and in possession of depth that only single player action games could realistically boast about in the past. Only the likes of Warframe can compare to it today. Other aspects from MMORPG’s include standard emotes which you can use both in single and multiplayer, a well-crafted social system and an old-school vibe when it comes to trading items in game.

Which brings us to the game’s multiplayer aspect. The dev does not hide that this is the game’s main appeal and selling point, but the game fortunately does not require you to play with others to progress. Instead, it follows the Borderlands school of thought where the campaign and progress can still be very fun and challenging when playing alone.
The online is not the best, larger lobbies tend to lag at times, but it is serviceable enough for both socialization and coop gameplay.

To touch on the general gameplay some more, it is not only deep but rather wide too, with its impressive replay value that comes from mastering the game’s multiple classes and the customization that they enable both aesthetically and in gameplay with various major differences in weapons and skills that they utilize to overcome the game’s obstacles.
Being inspired by great things is not enough on its own, of course. But the dev is skilled enough to perfectly mold all of these numerous aspects into a perfect polished and seamless package that would bring a tear to any millennial gamer.
Between all that, the game’s humble asking price for admission and many other positive things that will surely come as it continues with its development, I will proudly say it again with no trace of irony or tongue in cheek:
ATLYSS is an excellent game.

Do not let the early access label scare you away from experiencing its immense fun potential. This is my pick for indie game of the year 2024.

This is what is known as a good idea that went horribly wrong. The mechanics and the engine are creative and fun. The game at its core is Quake in third person view with Worms art style. The gun mechanics are interesting but imbalanced with beams and explosive weapons having a large edge over pulse and rifles.

The games biggest problems however is the lobby system and the maps. There is no way to choose what map or even game mode you want to play. Most maps are terribly designed with a bunch of hills, cliffs and holes thrown around in a random pattern and are poorly lit making them extremely confusing and hard to navigate.

The playerbase is pretty terrible overall since the game went F2P and the momment you finally land on one of the more decent maps with a good team the server crashes and you get booted back to the title screen.

The game has potential, but rigth now its ruined by multiple flaws that drag it down to a level that only angers you instead of bringing you joy.
