I bought this game a few years ago thinking it was going to be just Minecraft in space, and it is. It's a really good game.

However, KSH has evolved the specs over time, rendering the game unplayable with my hardware, even on legacy mode. It's just one big benchmark/slideshow for my card nowadays because there are no efforts being placed for serious optimization or even just a low-graphics mode (low-poly everything, minimum shaders).

I cannot refund the game since it has been such a long time, Even if I upgraded my computer, my brother would require the hardware upgrade as well, amounting the upgrade costs to be roughly $400 just to play this game. Now you're thinking "baahh go away poor kid" but we are the silent majority.

If you're an adult with a disposable income, go ahead and buy. Otherwise, you better keep your money in your wallet until you get a new computer.

Don't get me wrong, this game's concept is great, but the game just isn't finished.

The graphics are extremely unoptimized since it uses a custom 3D/game engine.

Moreover, the tutorial goes way too quickly: rather than introducing the elements of the game one by one, it just throws everything it's got at you right away. The game does nothing to explain how to make effective use of time manipulation mechanics (e.g. why you should never stay constantly 1:30 from present), where buttons are, what they even do, an introduction to the game's story, etc.

Supposedly, the campaign broke in a patch, so hardly any singleplayer except if you want to play against bots.
That said, this game isn't really worth buying/playing if you never understood it in the first place.

Prologue
A few months ago, I wanted to get back into AC5 using PCSX2 (my fat PS2 was not displaying very well on the television). However, a huge problem arose: everything clipped through bombers, meaning they were indestructible. There were a few people who were able to fix this using a Cheat Engine trainer and a complicated setup, but I decided it was too much for playing just one game.

Fast forward to August 2015: a friend bought this from Humble Bundle and only wanted Dank Souls so I claimed Assault Horizon to let it not go to waste. Setup as usual, install DX....

Review
My first gripe was setting up the controls for my Logitech Attack 3. If any axis was not at 0% then it was registered when binding and told you that it was already in use. So I had to make sure that the joystick throttle was at 0% before doing anything. Wait... If the game expects you to have everything at 0%, that should set off a few alarms shouldn't it? This game is supposed to be played on a controller, not on a joystick, just like War Thunder. Not to mention that it doesn't save the controller config unless you manually create %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Namco\ACAH. I also set the control scheme to "original" and turned off flight assist to make the controls as "realistic" as possible.

So now to gameplay. I expected a pretty long cutscene at the beginning briefing you on the story of the game, who the enemy is, your character's relationships, etc. Instead, it throws you into the field during combat. I maneuvered my way trying to mop up the fighters whilst learning the controls. After a while, I got the hang of it, but it felt as if the computer was guiding my fighter through the mayhem instead of giving me full control of the plane (such as DFM where you think you have control but the computer is really just guiding your general direction for you).

A huge annoyance that you did not find in AC5 was watching the airspeed indicator; it doesn't play well with the joystick throttle and boosts to 1100 kts (!?!) and back down to 100 if you don't watch how many turns you make. No g-force indicator, no redouts, no blackouts? Just.. turn the throttle down and you miraculously turn better? Shouldn't it be backward, given that most fighter jets depend on thrust vectoring?

But still. Look at the visuals! No need to fiddle with texture quality or anything, this game runs at 60fps (and I'm running an obscure graphics card that doesn't even support DX11). It's very hype, and it really does pump some adrenaline in you. Looks like the developers tried very hard to get the faces right but the facial expressions still look strange.

The helicopter gunner missions look like something straight from Call of Duty 4; it is quite generic and somehow your helicopter just tanks a bunch of RPG shots with minimal damage. Speaking of damage, your plane regenerates health.

I have not tried multiplayer but I hope that it is not too top-tier or anything like that.

Conclusion
5/10, average game that capitalizes on next-gen visuals but fails to develop a lasting storyline or skill-based competitive gameplay. No hard feelings on the devs, they really must have been overworked for this game to even have decent quality.

What's Next?
If you want actual, decent dogfighting, I recommend YSFlight[ysflight.org] (free), a low-poly game with tons of addons and planes that is dying because of overhyped games that flop like this one.

I've played GMod close to since version 10 was released. I bought it after I exhausted the massive amount of videos about the game.

When I bought it, I had to take turns playing the game. It was horrible 1 hour in, 1 hour out, but soon enough I finally got my own computer which I use now.

There's Workshop and stuff now, but back then there wasn't. It was basically impossible to get on a server, since it streamed a bunch of addons and sound packs every time you connected. On top of that, the loading times were horrible, going up to even 5 minutes.

GMod used to be pretty much a hack in the engine. It crashed whenever it felt like, Lua script errors all over the place, buggy physics. Despite those hinderances, I played it day (and night), amassing a total of 1,500 hours. After that, I grew bored of the game, turning towards a new game I found called Minecraft (remember, this was 3 years ago, Minecraft wasn't that popular back then).

What makes Garry's Mod such a good game? you ask. Let me tell you something: get addons, addons, and more addons. Wiremod is the largest and the best; get it. You'll find Expression 2/Starfall a good start for scripting. SCars is essential for multiplayer and chasing each other around maps. Bigcity is a classic map that's been in GMod since the beginning, and it's good for SCars. Finally, WAC and community packs are there if you're looking for air vehicles. There are some other random addons that are available that will compliment your experience, so just browse around the Workshop and find something you're interested in.

There are also a variety of gamemodes available in Garry's Mod. These are mostly for playing on multiplayer servers. They include Sandbox (the default), DarkRP (and variants) for "realistic" roleplaying, TTT, Spacebuild (a HUGE pack of parts for building ships and combat) GMRacer, GMStranded, Theater, Flood, and many, many more.

Once you grasp how you play GMod, you will love it! Singleplayer is just as good as multiplayer, so don't gloss over it. You can load and save duplications/contraptions, saves, and even use Advanced Duplicator to save your stuff offline and upload it to other servers.

I highly suggest you give those $10 to Garry because this game is worth much more than that, and I hope you buy this game and take my advice.

(My original recommendation was posted on Dec 5, 2010 @ 11:54am.)
