I like it. The Age system and Civ switching are actually really fun, and I think the potential for picking fun leader/civ combos is high. The Civs are actually all really detailed (visually and mechanically) - the graphics team put in work. Each Civ geographic style now has their own sets of units (to the point where you actually get German/British/American/French(!) tanks in the Modern Era). Hell, each tank even gets its own little designation number on it. There's so many little details like that. It is a delight.

And the three eras feel really distinct, each has a very different vibe and I liked that a lot. The different 'victory' conditions for each age (only the Modern age is an actual victory, the rest are just 'how well you did and get to carry stuff over') feel varied enough. I think they probably need tweaking - a couple probably aren't as fun as the rest, but it does mean there's lots of scope for trying out different things and specialising in different ages and again, so many potential combinations.

I think you probably get through the tech tree a little quickly? But I was playing on easy (whatever that's called now) so maybe that's just because of that. Certainly I was racing ahead of the AI (as you'd expect on easy with someone who has played a lot of Civ over the years) anyway. Oh! - I like that each Civ gets its own little culture policy tree as well as the generic one.
As people are saying though, the UI is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess. Like, actually embarrassing in places. Font sizes are all over the place, even on the same screen, things don't line up, pop-ups are huge and sometimes appear after you needed them... Information is hard to find and impossible to sort. You can make trade routes but is there a trade route screen where you can see them? lol no.

You can't sort cities in the city screen by production type, or at all, so I couldn't get any useful info out of that. One of the core mechanics is 'overbuilding' where you build over past ages buildings but actually seeing the pros/cons of that means jumping in and out of city screens to compare stuff and I just didn't bother.

You get a million notifications about floods miles away but the game doesn't bother to show your units being attacked.

It all badly needs polish.

BUT, it's fun. It's so fun. I couldn't wait to get back to playing it.

Oh and the soundtrack (same guys who did Civ VI) is gorgeous.

This is a really solid base for something great; it's a focused, shorter, Stellaris-style experience. Yes it isn't perfect, especially lore-wise (there's some oddities, like getting Intrepid class ships before Excelsior class...) but the Devs are looking at and acting on feedback, so these quirks can be ironed out. Just today a patch was released getting the visuals for some of the weapons closer to the show.

Hopefully it'll get a chance to show us where it's going - the Star Trek canon is chock-full of stuff they could throw into this.

C&C and Red Alert are still two of the best RTS games ever made. The remaster is excellent (although the upscaling on the FMVs has had varying levels of success, it seems to have worked better in C&C than Red Alert).

It's more Spider-Man. If you liked that, you're going to like this - although this is more like a bitesized portion than a full meal. (you should play Spider-Man first - this is a direct followon)
