This will be a long review, but for those who don't like to read: the game is near excellent. There are, however, multiple glaring issues with the game that I can only hope will be fixed with time and through continued support, as I wish this game to keep getting the love it deserves.

First let's talk about the good things. You start up the game and are greeted with what is possibly the best soundtrack to a game I have heard in a hot minute. The likenesses and mix between Daft Punk, Tron, and synthwave are absolutely phenomenal. Whether in combat or just sailing the high seas, the music amps the mood to another level. The retro look of all interfaces and the pixel art style bring a unique quality to the strategy scene which differs this game from other strategy titles, such as Company of Heroes or Total War. As you move troops across the battlefield and launch planes from the carrier, everything can be seen through a computer screen, which adds some realism. For those who don't have the best computers the market has to offer, here's a game you can run with maximum frames and no inconsistencies.

The campaign map is procedurally generated each time a new campaign is launched. While lengthy and not possible to finish the campaign in one sitting, there are plenty of enemies to fight as you go along. Simply moving to different islands which offer different, new resources means there is some strategy involved when choosing where to set priorities. Do you want a new air chassis to possibly help you in taking another island, or do you need an island that provides fuel for the ship? Furthermore, the procedural generation of the world means each time a new campaign is launched, the weather, ocean currents, and what resources each island offers is different than in the last campaign. You must adapt to your new environment, and it adds replayability to each campaign.

When actually going into combat, the invasion of islands can be stressful, and capturing an island is satisfying. Changing the loadout of land and air units gives you the ability to adapt to the new threats faced on another island. Capturing islands sometimes offers new weapons, which can be used to beef up your units.

We come now the issues. And just to preface, there's quite a few of them and I cannot list all of them, but I will highlight the ones that need to be definitely fixed. First off, the game has the potential to put 16 players on a carrier. I joined in on a server with friends one time which had 9 players, and this alone was an absolute fustercluck. With one person controlling the helm, the captain sitting in his chair, one person manning the weaponry on the carrier, and 3 people controlling units, this left 3 people without a job at all. While the carrier is completely explorable, there's nothing to do on the carrier if you aren't on the bridge. Optimally, this game is played with 3 or 4 people.

The AI is sometimes the worst I have seen in games. Whether land units are getting stuck on terrain or air units begin gun runs and just crash into the ground, this makes for extremely frustrating situations, as your assets are always limited.

There are long periods of the time where you are just doing nothing. And this is the biggest issue of them all. Sometimes the drive from island to island takes upwards of 20 minutes. While people put all power into propulsion, and this works in the beginning part of the game, as you progress and encounter more enemies, my group found it necessary to always put radar and weapons on, slowing the vessel even more. If the carrier is driving against the ocean current and has power to all systems, the ship might slow to 10 knots, an absolutely abysmal speed in the game. The time it also takes for land units to get from the carrier to land is also insanely slow, and the air units only have so many weapons, so once they're exhausted, you have to send the plane back to the carrier, land, take the plane down the elevator, rearm, and then relaunch and get back to the fight. There is simply too much monotony in the game.

Overall, the game is near excellent despite its issues. I've personally wanted a game where I am placed on a carrier for the longest time, and this game definitely delivers. Watching a plane do a successful gun or bombing run from the bridge of the ship is a sight to behold, and while I did mention the monotony of the game, no 2 islands are the same, and it diversifies the combat. If you have friends who are also into combat sims and strategy, this could be some of the best multiplayer content Steam has to offer at the moment. I hope the developers take the time to read the reviews of their phenomenal game and implement some changes, because it will justify the pricier purchase price.

Despite what people have said in the early reviews of this game, I have never had so much fun with the boys. After a straight 17 hour session of playing this game (minus 1 crash), I can honestly say these are some of the best gaming moments I've ever had

By far and downright some of the most fun I have had playing a game before. While the skill gap within the community is very wide, that does not take away from the absurd amount of laughter that comes from plying this with friends. 11/10

This is the Total War franchise at its finest. CA did an amazing job with this game, and incorporated everything I personally wanted in a Total War game. While this is very niche and may not appeal to everyone, I cannot recommend this game enough. With a dynamic story line, massive variety in terms of how you can play the game, and an insane amount of factions to play as (which each have their own play style), Three Kingdoms delivers in its promise to give the most diverse Total War experience yet. The battles themselves are a bit boring at times, however, with not a lot of unit variety and a somewhat bad A.I. In my opinion, this is totally offset by character customization and an actually decent campaign A.I.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is a MUST play for those who are a fan of ancient Chinese history!

I don't ever write reviews for games. But the amount of times I have started this game up and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it is unbeatable. I absolutely love the dynamics of this game, the tactics, the graphics, and the people who make up the community. This is just what gaming is about: pure fun.

While the World War II persona may not be for everyone, the game represents accurate depictions of war in the west would have been like. With realistic combat scenarios/maps, awesome skins that are unlockable, and accurate language commands on the German side, this game hits it for those who are looking for a great World War II shooter. Highly recommend! Well done to the developers; keep up the good work.
