Marvel Puzzle Quest (MPQ), is a mobile device port for steam. Is that necessarily a bad thing? I don't think so, but it is something that you need to keep in mind when looking at the UI and graphics. It also effects the pay system, and since this is a F2P game, that's something people tend to focus on. So let's start there:

Can you play MPQ without spending money? Yes. Will you be competitive... well, mostly. Let's talk about what real money gets used for: You can purchase the two types of in-game currency with real money. ISO and Gold. ISO is used, mainly, to purchase boosts for use during combat and to spend to level up your characters. It is the common currency of the game and is earned pretty easily. Gold can be used for a number of things. You can purchase additional slots to hold more characters (you are limited to 4 characters at the start and the prices for additional slots increases the more you have), you can purchase some "super-boosts", you can purchase health packs, and you can purchase additional covers for your characters. Do you "have" to purchase these things? Nope. You do earn some gold through normal game play, and many people (myself included) have found that if you focuse your purchases you don't really hit a wall for a very long time.

Let's move onto the gameplay itself. MPQ is a tile matching game that is themed around the Marvel Comic Universe. You swap tiles on a grid board to make 3 or longer chains of the same color/shape (think Bejewelled), you then score a hit dealing damage and (in most cases) generated Ability Points (AP) of that color. Each character that you have selected (three) will have different abilities both passive and active. These abilities are often fuelled by the AP you generate from your matches. Pretty simple. There is an entertaining amount of depth in selecting which team you want to bring to an event, and finding good synergy between character abilities is important.

The characters are leveled up by unlocking their skills. Skills are found by getting random drop "Covers". Each cover has one skill associated with it. Once you have used that cover to train the character in that skill it will increase the "Current Max Level" of the character, you can then use ISO to increase the level of the character. Every level increase raises the max Hit Points of the character, the amount of damage they do and the effectivness of their skills. Once you have unlocked the first level of the skill you can use Gold to increase the skill level (this is the main form of Pay-to-Win that you see in the game, but is limited by the fact that you have to have the base skill first to buy it).

Health of your characters is the delaying factor in playing. Not only are you doing damage to your enemies, but they are doing damage to your characters as well. Their health will increase back to max over time, but with high level characters this can take several hours. If you take your three best characters into a match that is over their head and get them all killed, this can mean that you don't get to play again for a few hours... unless you use Health Packs. Health packs allow a character to return to full health immediately. You earn health packs over time, one every 30 minutes, but could buy additionals for Gold.

The game provides some basic "PVE" missions to get a feel for the game and earn some basic covers and boosts, but the main part of the game that allows you to progress is the "PVP" duels and "PVE" events. Events rotate every few days and give opportunities for rare and high end rewards, but competition can be tough and some events require having certain characters to participate. Duels are a staple way to put your team against another player. The duels aren't really PVP though, because the same AI that runs the normal missions just uses the team, not an actual player.

Long and the short of it: I find MPQ to be very entertaining, something that I have spent many an hour with and am perfectly happy to keep playing. There are issues, some bugs that break events and some exploits that people have found that can let them rank up super fast, and there are concerns about Pay-To-Win, but overall I can say that if you are looking for a casual time waster, this does the job rather well.
