Very fun and unique little game, with a surprising amount of mechanical depth, and a promising future. It currently only consists of skirmish games (either singleplayer against AI, or multiplayer co-op/PvP), where you deploy fleets that you've built in the fleet editor in a limited-scope tactical battle. A campaign/conquest mode is planned for the future, but that feature currently on hold pending a major rework (it's not canceled, guys, chill).

Game is in early access and still in active development by a developer who seems to genuinely care about making a great game that fits his singular vision, I'm eagerly looking forward to the future of the project, but it's still plenty of fun in its current state. Just be aware there's quite a lot of highly competitive, sweaty players in the skirmish lobbies that will absolutely destroy anyone who doesn't know what they're doing.

I didn't go into Reforger expecting a game I could play. I went into it expecting a tech demo which strongly demonstrated the power of the new Enfusion engine that BI have spent so long developing. There are noticable improvements on the engine side of things, for sure, which I'll list further down, but the purpose of Reforger was to demonstrate the power of the new Enfusion engine and show that it is capable of powering the next iteration of the Arma franchise. I personally feel that it fails to accomplish this.

No destruction except basic stuff like knocking over signs and fences, vehicle damage model is incredibly simple, water physics are practically non-existent, worse than Arma 2 (BTR floats, the jeep falls through the water as if it's not there; no drag or buoyancy as far as I can tell), the graphics are improved over Arma 3 in some ways, but overall pretty meh (shadows look alright, clouds look meh, screen-space reflections are quite janky, lots of pop-in, vegetation looks disgusting at medium distance, no blending of where assets or water meet terrain, I could go on for a long time). Grass still disappears past 150m max, units are still very visible at long range. No vanilla WMO in the engine; units on top of a moving object will just slide off. There are no aircraft or boats, and as anyone who has experienced vehicles in the only other Enfusion release to date, DayZ, knows, there is a lot lacking in that department and Reforger needed to prove that Enfusion engine is capable in this regard, as Arma is a combined arms game and if the engine cannot fulfil that requirement, it fails entirely.

Now, the good stuff:
+ AI is very simple, but I was able to have about 12 squads on screen fighting each other at close range and have a good framerate, which is an improvement over Arma 3
+ Picture-in-picture scopes, look good, run nice.
+ Lightning and shadows are an improvement over Arma 3, though it's nothing we haven't already seen in DayZ
+ They've got PBR and some better workflows and tools for modding
+ Wheeled vehicle physics are much improved
+ Animation system is better, much less clunky than Arma 3
+ Many enterable buildings with detailed interiors
+ DayZ-style interaction system; the scroll menu is dead

Now, as a game, well... It's a tech demo and you should understand that. It is by no means comparable to Arma 3, nor is that a fair comparison, but there are numerous complaints to make nonetheless; the editor has been completely gutted, it's basically Zeus but worse, afaik no scripts or triggers or anything; don't think you can even save the scenario you've built? UI is awful. The water texture on lakes is just an animation dependent on wind speed; set the wind to 0 and the water is completely static. AI can't drive vehicles.

Update 12/09/2021:

Changed to recommended.

While Keen Software House abandoned the game in a miserable state, there is still fun to be had, and still a couple of active servers. I wouldn't bother playing without mods, but there are .DLL fixes which fix many of the game's issues (available on https://discord.gg/YuJwhHS PNL Discord server), and an active modding community, with a great deal of quality modded content which at this point can pretty much be considered a total conversion when put together (example: WW2 mods).

-------------------------------------

Original review:

It's abandonware at this point, in my opinion. The game is quite unstable, and the performance less than amazing. The most fun to be had in this game is in survival multiplayer, but unfortunately the multiplayer is quite a bit less stable than the singleplayer.

After promising around a year ago that they were only temporarily suspending development while they focused on Space Engineers, today on March 17, they released one final update for it, fixing some critical issues, and announced that the game is 'released' and leaving early access. They knew there would be some community backlash; they even had a part of their FAQ be 'Q: I am not happy that you stopped developing Medieval Engineers' before the first comment was even posted.

Given the current state the game is in, and knowing they do not intend to continue development, I cannot recommend it in good conscience. Some aspects of the game such as the destruction physics are quite cool, so if you just want to mess around, buy it, but know that the many issues with it will never be fixed.

Unless you have an SSD or an unusually fast HDD, don't get this game because you're not the target audience. Several months back, the load times massively increased presumably due to a bug they never bothered to fix or something. This means that without an SSD, you'll never even see the plane that drops you off. You'll be stuck on a loading screen with sound until you get automatically kicked out of the plane, meaning every game you'll be thrown out to the egde of the map usually with a cluster of other so-affected players. You'll be lucky to avoid dying to the blue circle due to this, since most of the time you'll find yourself starting in the water well out to see.

ArmA III... Another timeless source of entertainment from Bohemia Interactive. Although it improves upon its predecessor - ArmA II / Operation Arrowehad - in many ways, there is definately room for improvement. While the game is more intensive on your hardware, especially CPU and GPU, for obvious reasons, the game does appear to be lacking a bit of optimisation. Saying that, it's not bad at all, and is perfectly playable. Players on a lower end PC may experience serious lag issues when playing large missions, especially during multiplayer.

ArmA 3 is a tactical shooter. Call of Duty or Battlefield fanboys go home. It is one of the most authentic combat simulators available to the public. It is not perfect, however. For what ArmA 3 lacks in realism and authenticity, it makes up for with a better physics engine, improved bullet ballistics, better graphics, ragdoll physics and an even bigger map. ArmA 3, like most of its Bohemia Interactive siblings, and many other games on the market, is a dish best served multiplayer. It's a very squad-based, team-work orientated warfare experience. You CAN go lone wolf rambo; there is nothing stopping you. However, you should be prepared to die very quickly and you may negatively impact both you and your teammates with your actions. In multiplayer, make sure you have all sectors covered and that you've got your teammates backs. Every squadmember is a vital asset, and if you screw up your whole team will pay the price. It's not about the points, it's about the mission. You cease to be a player; from the moment you join a server your mentality should be that you are a cog in the war machine. Be the best you can be; weigh your options, play tactically and, if you're lucky, you might 'Survive', 'Adapt' and 'Win'.

The AI is somewhat disappointing, can be extremely inconsistent. Sometimes you can run right past them and they will not notice you. Other times, they will detect and headshot you from 500m away, first shot, in the middle of the night and fog all around. This seems to have improved since the Alpha release of the game, however. The AI is often fairly consistent in its behaviour. They are not to be treated as the weak AI you might storm through in other games. While they often are incapable of matching the abilities of a skillful player, the AI an often deadly foe. Respect the AI, and try to put yourself in their shoes. While you may cry 'bull****!' when an AI kills you, were you the AI shooting at the player that is yourself, I am sure it not seem so ridiculous and their shots so impossibly accurate anymore. Stick to cover, stay calm and don't do anything stupid. Use your teammates to help you (or try... public servers can get messy). If you want to enjoy ArmA 3 to the fullest, I would definately suggest seeking out and joining a 'Realism Unit'. Realism units are player groups which emulate the battlefields of today (and even some which are chronologically seperate from today). There, you will hopefully find organised, structured, tactical and authentic gameplay. If, like most people, that is what brought you to the ArmA series, a Realism Unit is where you belong.

One thing ArmA has always had is a vast modding community, and fans are constantly producing and releasing more content. A modification I am particularly looking forward to is the Advanced Combat Environment (more commonly known as ACE2, the sequal to ACE for the original ArmA: Armed Assault game) mod for ArmA 3. In ArmA 2, which utilised a more realistic feeling, simulator-ish, yet more restrictive engine, I had a lot of fun with ACE. It adds lots of functionality and added realism, and helps to expand the world of Arma. The 'Authentic Gameplay Modification' (AGM) and Comabt Space Enhancement (CSE) were two realism mods which expanded the gameplay significantly, which have since been discontinued. Their teams have merged, along with some of the developers from ACE2, to develop the recently announced ACE3. As of your reading this, ACE3 is probably already released and one of the most widely used mods in the ArmA III modding scene.

Perhaps one of the most appealing aspects of the ArmA series, and one that gives it such longevity and popularity, would be the powerful mission editor tools. On the Steam Workshop, and several other online websites, you can find both Singleplayer and Multiplayer community-made missions with varying difficulties and talent. The ALiVE mod for ArmA 3 allows mission makers to easily build large-scale, dynamic, evolving missions utilising procedural generation, helping to flesh out the ArmA experience.

I am excited to see what ArmA IV will bring to the table, if Bohemia Interactive decide to create a fourth installment in the series. They probably will, and I do think the first thing they will need to work on if they want to have a snowball's chance in hell of selling an ArmA 4, would be the AI. It isn't bad, but it is far from good and needs some massive improvement.
