Please note that this review comes from the perspective and experiences of a veteran player with 350+ Played-Time hours spent on Rain World, including its five additional Downpour campaigns before the launch of The Watcher (though, admittedly, some of that time was spent in Expeditions + Challenges. If, for some reason, you choose to peek at my Achievements, please note that I'm only one Challenge away from obtaining 100% - 'Perfect Parries' still eludes me to this day). Rain World/Downpour is now so familiar to me that I can navigate its regions without a map, and know the lore, concepts, character personalities, and story beats inside-out.

My first venture into The Watcher mostly involved observation of changes, absorbing new story aspects, being insulted by a rather cheeky new Echo character, and trying to mentally piece together exactly where this new Slugcat fits into RW/DP’s existing timeline. Spoiler: It does not. While The Watcher’s story aspects will never explicitly state that it operates on an entirely different plane of existence, you will eventually piece it together through evidence clues, such as The Rot existing in places far beyond Five Pebbles’ reach, and the fact that it is purple (all Rot originating from FP’s can is tinged cobalt-blue). For veteran players like myself, such non-correlating aspects felt jarring and mismatched upon playing for the first time. This is why I suspect that much of the initial reaction to this expansion was mixed, and even somewhat negative in the first few days after launch.

However, I do implore you all to keep playing, to put aside what you already know and love of the earlier content (it will still be there for you), and to keep persisting with The Watcher. Getting lost, exploring, being killed numerous times to environmental and predatory hazards has always been a core feature of Rain World’s game design.

There are two endings to this expansion at time of writing (the most recent announcement has informed us that there will be more content shortly, so that will change). One ending involves a treasure hunt by using audio cues. The other involves exploitation of your dimension-hopping ability, and learning how to use the new map. And so, The Watcher is VERY different to everything that has come before, but I’ve also come to the conclusion that I actually find that quite refreshing. We’ve already done more than enough Iterator messenger quests, and adding more of them may have diminished what came before, or even felt derivative.

Please give this expansion a chance. It contains wonderful stories within its own right. For like all things in Rain World, once you adapt and learn in the face of unfamiliarity, you will make it your new home.

Addendum: OAOAOAO is only rude and obnoxious because they’re scared, alone, and because they were probably a young child before they tried, or were forced to ascend. The ending involving them is actually very sweet. Please end their suffering. They deserve love.

I, like many before me, played this game for approximately 10 ~ 20 minutes after initial purchase, then set it aside and for well over a year because of the absolutely crushing difficulty (and frustration at being killed every 10 ~ 30 seconds). Then, earlier this year for almost no reason at all, I picked it back up and got absolutely roped in. This game becomes an exercise in accepting the chaotic and often unfair nature of existence once you are able to make peace with the fact that being eaten, or randomly killed by invisible lizards is inevitable, and a part of the core game-design.

The environments, soundtrack, and world-setting itself are all quite beautiful. The more dangerous creatures of Rain World are also ingenious in design - some have either evolved generations onward from their original purpose and design, while others retain their menacing part-mechanical, part-biological features. You will have an absolutely delightful time working out intricate puzzles, navigating the various mazes the game puts before you, and having to perform perfectly timed manoeuvres *just right* if you want to succeed and survive to make it onto your next safehaven, all whilst being mindful of the ever-present, ticking timebomb that is MURDEROUS DEATH RAIN at the end of each cycle.

The stories contained within this game are often crushingly sad, but also contain hope and renewal.

You play as a tiny little slugcat against the world, so pick up your spear and survive!

This is an RPG game where you literally do not have to kill anyone to succeed, and killing things will actually make you feel bad about it. On the first play through, I went into this game without knowing anything about it and killed the first boss monster. I felt so bad I actually reset and started from scratch.

Undertale has a nice retro feel and a fairly decent fight interface with lots of gimmicks and fun puzzles. The ensemble cast of characters are quite memorable and will leave you longing for more interaction with them after their story arcs have been completed (especially Papyrus... he's my favorite NYEEH HEHEHEHEH HEH).

Although incredibly linear (this game doesn't have much replay value), the whole adventure is rather fun. Expect to sink about 10 ~ 15 hours of playtime into this.

Well worth the $10 pricetag.
