I bounced off of this when it was still a pre-Super Meat Boy, indie .exe. Not sure what's changed between then and now, but the game behaves virtually the same - so I must be a bigger person.

There aren't many "platformers" (platformers?) that demand such arcade-level mastery from the user. The skills you develop while playing Flywrench are not only mechanical, but translate to perception as well. A kind of neuroplasticity that teaches you to interpret your form-as-locomotion-against-obstacles and pivoting on a dime every 1/10th of a second.

The music is rad. The visuals call back to spectrum/vector style linework. The skills are real. Flywrench is for those who dig microloops that demand mastery. Flywrench is for those who are proud to be the best.

Mini Metro is pretty straightforward: draw tracks, get your shape-represented passengers to their destination, and see what happens when the needs of a transit system emerge organically. Realized minimalistically and in a charming metro map aesthetic, Mini Metro has been one of my number one "chill" games of the last year.

I can't even begin to express how much I love the art direction in this game. The palette covers an entire spectrum of brilliant colours while somehow managing to remain easy to parse. The soundtrack is moody and atmospheric, and you have the option to hum or sing along with it at any time.

Mechanically, the programmatically-oriented and fully customizable combat makes for a play experience entirely personal to the user. Transistor will only ever be as difficult as you choose.

The worldbuilding and lore married beautifully to the aesthetic landscape, theme, and gameplay. This was a joy to experience.

Where The Stanley Parable was a dynamic and living converstion about the relationship between authorial intent and user agency, The Beginner's Guide proves a more linear narrative experience. Through iteration and narration, you'll eventually be allowed to observe and interpret the relationship between those that create and those who consume. Decide for yourself the virtues of the creative process and whether or not they can exist in a vacuum. Everybody will walk away with different interpretations, but this is a must play.

I doubt anybody needs a recommendation to play Origins, but I've gotta' loose my tongue. Mechanically and environmentally, it's pretty much on par with the previous Arkham titles. Stylistically, cinematically, and narratively - however - it is a cut above. By far the best story I've enjoyed in a Batman title and pretty damned exceptional by blockbuster video-game standards. Play it.

There's really not much to say about Thirty Flights of Loving that shouldn't wait to be said until AFTER people have played it. It's a fantastic exercise in storytelling and technically deft when it comes to player agency. Not what I expected, but certainly nothing to sneeze at. Check it out.

I kinda' feel like Antichamber is one of those games that's done a disservice the more you talk about it, so I'll be brief: Antichamber is a first-person, non-euclidean puzzle-platformer whose themes of motivational life wisdom parallel the gameplay and puzzles perfectly. Also, it's one of the greatest games I've ever played.

Normally not a big fan of GTA-esque sandbox-types, but this game is just an exercise in fun. You're told from the credits roll "yeah, we don't take ourselves too seriously" and get to spend the next mission or so getting delightfully hep to that fact. From tank missions, to base-jumping, to car sing-a-longs, I could not be happier to have picked this up.
