It's a game, and it has puzzles (technically)--but I think it really needs at least a *few* more similarities to be called "like Myst."

The interface is frustratingly clunky, and the perspective is so warped that it's very hard to tell where you are and where you're going. The grainy and "glitchy" graphics make the game feel like a fever dream, especially combined with the powerlessness of the cut scenes.

The game wants you to care deeply about a cube, but other than some really strange rambling after the fact, gives you no reason to care so much about it. Together with the slow and rambling audio files and ineffectual plot, the game is extremely boring. It's extremely difficult even to try to simply focus on the puzzles because the interface is so terrible. All in all, a deeply frustrating game I didn't even want to keep playing.

The most basic flaw in this game is that you have NO WAY to block jerks, and your entire experience of the game depends on anyone who joins you being a nice person.

There's also the fact that if you get joined with someone who has slow internet, your game will also lag and start to freeze intermittently.

The person I was joined with had obviously played before and knew how to optimize for their internet experience, because they used my inexperience and their lag moments to use me as a distraction for the monsters so they could get by, uncaring of what happened to me, also racing to unlock everything before I could see any of it.

I'm glad to see in other reviews that my experience seems to be in the minority, but it was so negative that I haven't wanted to play again.

This is an incredibly fun and engrossing diversion for half an hour at most, exploring things and putting the pieces together. The puzzles are very simple and intuitive by comparison to other games; I hardly had to think about it, so I could really focus on the story and the feeling of being there in the attic. The graphics are lovely--you can almost feel the sunlight on your face.

The movement and UI of the game are very simple and explained very simply as you go along and as you need things, so it feels very natural and not overloading. This game is a nice break from complicated games that require a lot of memorization. WASD for movement, Z for zooming in on things, right and left clicking for observations and interaction, Q to open inventory/see journal pages, and V to look through your special necklace that reveals certain things.

I even enjoyed working to get all six achievements! I only wish that there had also been trading cards, but that relates to the other main drawback of this game--it is very short, and ends just as it's getting really interesting. However, it's free, so I highly recommend grabbing it so that you'll always have it as a fallback in case you get bored. If you enjoy exploring rooms and putting together the pieces of a story, you will probably really enjoy this game, short as it is.

I would say that it's a promising start to what may prove to be an even better game, if the developers can pull the rest of it off, and I really hope they can. If you do like this game I highly suggest following the franchise so you can be the first to know when the rest of the series comes out.

Let me start with a warning:
This game is extremely addictive! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I Dream of Stardew Valley
I think this may be the only game where I've literally awoken from dreams of doing calculations for farm planning and figuring out what order to plant and upgrade things in-!

You start off thinking you'll just try it, and the next thing you know, you find yourself staring wide-eyed at your screen thinking "just one more day cycle couldn't hurt!" and dreaming of ways to make your farm that much more efficient so you can basically just plant and harvest it for all the sweet rewards, but it will take care of itself while you go off and find the love of your pixelated life.

Seriously, this game has so many rabbit holes to go down, I don't even know where to begin. Each of the potential dating partners has a dedicated fan following that mirrors serious manga and anime, complete with fan art and guides and community discussion. I've been in serious paralysis about who to choose for this save.

The friendship matrix alone--yes I said matrix! Is crazy detailed, and I just found an entirely new menu for managing it that I didn't even know was there. (click on any characters' name under the heart menu to see their birthday and all the knowledge you have gained, through any means, of their gifting preferences!)

Fishing and crab pots are practically a game unto themselves--heck, there is an entire separate mini game in the saloon! And then there's the mines... Oh, and the holidays!

Even if farming is not your thing, the game gives you so many ways to do everything that you can focus on what you want to do and mostly ignore what you dislike. You can really do almost anything.

Update: This game appears to be a farming sim (or a dating sim?) but it's really more of an RPG with elements of farming, mining, combat, dating, friendship, crafting/cooking/fishing, home decoration, and even things like land layout. It rewards the player for learning more about how it works, and has actual MAPS to emphasize each feature of the game so you can play the way you prefer. Just when I think "I wish the game had X" (craftable pots) I find them. It's that kind of game. There were leprechaun shoes. I didn't know to wish for those.

Pretty neat puzzles, with the spice of "danger" here and there, though you're never in any actual danger, so you can relax and devote all your brain power to noticing details and solving puzzles.

The game is point-n-click, so if you get frustrated and start clicking like Mad Mouse you may suddenly find yourself going places (or returning to them) without meaning to. whee! Of course I've never done that. It's theoretical.

Some people may be surprised (and disappointed? or relieved?) to learn that there is no penalty or reward for using hints--you can use them all and it makes no difference to anything except maybe your play speed. (and how much hair you keep?)

Achievement hunters will notice that there are six achievements, but those who wish to find them on their own may have a challenging time because the game doesn't show you want to look for (what the $%@! do they look like?!) and they're well hidden and start fairly early on in the game. Luckily you can easily replay chapters once you've unlocked them and quit them at any point without any issue, so you can always go back and look for a shining blueprint and then leave as soon as you find it. Note that there is also a guide if you want to use it, and it's fairly easy to get all the achievements with the guide, so you can get a perfect game without too much sweat and tears.

I didn't find the puzzles that hard compared to Myst and Riven and some others. Most of the puzzles are fairly intuitive, though sometimes it's not always obvious that you need to take certain steps. Always open your Swiss keys! lol that will make sense if you play the game... There are also walkthroughs online if you need more help than what the included hints provide, so don't be afraid to take on this game even if you aren't a practiced puzzle solver.

The story is fun but simple. I finished it in about 12 hours but I wasn't rushing and I had other things going on. A habitual puzzle solver could probably solve it faster, whereas others may get a longer play time out of it. While you can replay chapters at will and can visit the hall of achievements to "play" with all the mechanisms you've unlocked, there isn't much replay value unless you have a bad memory or wait long enough to forget how all the puzzles are solved. Definitely grab this on sale if you love puzzle games.

This Game is Amazing
The descriptions of this game are a bit misleading, and might lead you to think that the game might be boring. If you're hoping for a game with combat and blood, then maybe you might think so. But if you're an RPG lover who looks for the chance to explore lush green forests, craggy mountains and sparkling crystal caves, who enjoys collecting lore and crafting recipes, who looks for secrets to unlock and ways to improve your character--well then, you've found what you're looking for!

Graphics
The graphics of this game are everything you would expect from a game about painting. It's like moving through a 3D screensaver of the most beautiful pictures you can find. Thomas Kincaid often came to mind as I explored. The game minimizes the interface so that you can fully enjoy the scenery and immerse yourself in what you see. There's an option to have a center-screen pointer to help alleviate feelings of dizziness. The only other jarring note in what could otherwise feel like a window to an alternate, greener reality, is that all the people who live there have animal heads--either monkey, bear, deer, or owl. At first this seems incredibly strange, but it quickly becomes familiar. The game also has the option to add all your paintings to your screenshot folder! It's a game that lends itself well to screenshots and is very relaxing and enjoyable to play.

Painting and Gameplay
People who love taking pictures will really enjoy this game, as it not only uses paintings as a quest objective some of the time, but always gives the player full control of how the painting is done within the framework (HA! see what I did there?) of how paintings are done in the game. To paint anything, the player must have crafted a canvas, which they automatically know how to do (you have the recipe). You find the pieces for it in the game (they highlight when you put your mouse over them, but not in the horrible, obtrusive way that some games do), and then craft the item in your crafting interface. All your recipes, crafted items, foraged items and other items stay in your backpack, which also has your crafting interface. Pressing a button and dragging a square or rectangle (depending on what you select) decides the focus of your painting. You can even add filters to them by drinking various beverages, which you can buy or craft. (There's a very nice guide which also shows the resulting filters!) You can paint anything at any time, but if you don't paint quest objectives in a timely manner, you might fail those. Your only real limits are real life time, quest time, and canvasses.

The game gradually moves you through different map areas that have very natural-feeling borders but increasing levels of survival difficulty. (In the earliest section of the game, you can only go about at night with a special drink that will keep you warm (and has a time duration) until you make your way to another place and get a coat. That's one example. There is no mini-map; you have to learn to navigate your way around by site, although you can obtain a paper map that you can use like an old-fashioned paper map! It adds to the realism of the game and I felt it added to the immersion even more. I was more careful and painstaking in my explorations than I might have been, taking care not to get lost.

Although you don't have to eat food, you can obtain beverages which give different screen effects that apply to any paintings you do while you have them. Drinking water removes the effect. I suppose people who theoretically enjoy mushrooms might enjoy these effects as well, but I can't say for certain because I've never tried mushrooms (at least not THAT kind) and I haven't had any in-depth conversations with anyone who has. You can die of cold, but the game will simply reset you to your last "safe" position and you will lose anything you gathered or crafted and any progress you made.

Quests and Characters
In each section of the map, you will meet people who need or want various things. This game excels at interesting characters with detailed and complicated lives and realistic emotions, and you will get to make some awkward decisions that will affect your relationships. There are a lot of semi-complex discussion trees--way more than some games but not to the level of, say, Mass Effect or Witcher III. You'll receive a number of "quests" to do for the people in each section of the map, and can refer to them in your journal. You can choose to be kind or mean, and the characters you affect will respond in kind, but I don't know of any ways that it changes your character itself--there's nothing like Fable or the Mass Effect system. It seems fairly simple and straightforward by comparison but still fun and interesting.

Conclusions
If you love RPGs, you'll probably love this game! But be warned, it has a habit of making you lose time. I think I lost about fourteen hours. I'm not sure where they went. I sat down to play for an hour, got really engrossed, and the next thing I knew...! Also, when you get really into it, it feels a bit strange to stop seeing everyone as an animal. And you may start wondering which animal you would be, or suddenly realize that you are one.

I'm not recommending this game even though it's free, and here's why: I bought it when it was being sold as Early Access. Then the developers abandoned it and finally made it into what it is now. But that's not the only or main reason.

The story can be played through in about an hour, and does have some interesting (and surprising!) events, but most of it is not interactive. Even though it's called "Cat" interstellar, the main part of the story is about a robot designed after a dog!

When I played it, there was another unconnected proof-of-concept area where the player could control a kitten and make it romp around a room, but ultimately not really DO anything. I would have to replay the game to see if ANYTHING got added between when I played it (and monetarily supported its development) and now, but I honestly cannot muster the desire.

Ultimately, I suppose this could be a fun diversion for an hour if you have nothing else to do, especially since it's now free, but other than that I would rather play something else.

Gamer Advisory! Potential Triggers for:
Body Dismorphia, Eating Disorders, Body Image issues, Claustrophobia, suffocation.*
Please be kind. I've included this warning in hopes that everyone can find the games they'd most enjoy. :) Game includes themes of social judgement relating to beauty/ugliness, social usefulness, body judgments, being trapped without senses (temporarily), discussion of fear of being trapped and of suffocation, and includes a helpless, trapped female.

I really wish Steam had a "Mixed feelings" category, because this game is very interesting and thought-provoking. I find myself grappling with the questions it presents every time I see it. But it's also frustratingly buggy. If you're interested in the subjects this game discusses, I would also suggest the "Uglies" book series by Scott Westerfeld which really explores the subjects and which I felt informed my playthrough and investigation of this game. I continually remembered various parts of the books as I was playing, and now find the two experiences linked together in my mind.

Graphics
The game doesn't automatically start full screen or detect system graphic settings; it will start windowed and at the lowest possible settings so it will look like crap until you adjust it! From there, depending on your settings,
  • I can make out shapes! <-- where it starts! No joke; it's dark and there are pixelated shapes. Try squinting.
  • 1990's cartoons?
  • Pixelated bushes and trees that glitch if you move too fast. Chant to yourself "I am a turtle"...
  • Obviously computerized green "land" with "trees" and pixels bushes that occasionally flicker if you shift perspectives or turn too quickly <-- what I got
  • Theoretically better??? <--never achieved, a dream, Maybe if you have better hardware than I do...

Bugs
I ended up playing part of the game twice because it has no confirmation screen on its "Start New Game" menu! I accidentally mis-clicked and it started the game over with no warning, over-writing my progress. I selected to skip the tutorial the second time, but it ignored my input and did the tutorial anyway! Worse yet, later on my avatar got stuck between a fence and building with no way out. I tried everything, including reloading the chapter, but I reappeared in the stuck position! The cumulative frustration of that and the previous bugs was so much that I quit playing. I'm not even going to start talking about the graphics flickers, because then this will get way too long.

Beautiful
The part of the game I enjoyed most was taking my time to explore the yurt, and trying to piece together all the scraps of information that were actually littered everywhere. (Who lived here?! a mole-rat?!) I was delighted by the sense of freedom that I had in being able to explore and move almost everything, although I quickly discovered that putting things back could be a real challenge. (....just....maneuver....giant flipper-hands...UGH! SO CLOSE!!)

Ugly
Although the game seems to leave you so much information to piece together, I felt like it nullified all my efforts as soon as I talked to the robot lady. She certainly told me more than I had managed to piece together on my own, and gave me even more questions to boot, but it felt very unsatisfactory to me and like I had wasted all of my time. Also, even though you can put movable items anywhere you want, whenever the game reloads a location, everything will revert to original locations. When I thought about it, I realized that happens in other games too, but things tend to go back into orderly places so I don't notice--it's as if the game is cleaning up after me. But this game makes a mess of things I had put away! It made me feel erased, or like I was living with a slob. Which made me wonder--do other people ever feel erased when games clean up after them?

Locations
Overall the world feels very large and open, but after you've gone around a bit, you'll feel the "edges" of the world. Even the Carnival ruins begin to feel small. I found out there are really only two main locations, the yurt and the carnival area, and several "tertiary" locations that you pass through to finish tasks; the lake, the "bus" stop, and the sheds outside.

Gameplay
The game is divided into chapters each with a main goal and several tasks you'll need to complete to progress the story; you'll have to figure out where and and how to do these. Time seems to be fairly loose except for the timed mini-games. The first two or three chapters are about you, and felt the most fun to me because I was still exploring the yurt and trying to figure out my identity and how everything worked. But the later chapters started to feel very repetitive. The robot lady always gets some kind of bug or mechanical failure, and you have to go look for a part in the carnival ruins where they always are; and the robot lady always knows exactly where they are, and seems to have remote control over exactly the right things, even if she doesn't know who she is and can't control her own body. You have to figure out how to get to it, evading or destroying black clouds, play a timed mini game (which has the option to skip if you fail), and bring the part back to her (still evading the black clouds). I was frustrated that the game abandons all exploration of the character that you play, and of your own development, and voices your complete devotion to rebuilding the robot lady; you are relegated to a mere errand person with no choices (except to stop playing). At that point the game doesn't feel like it's still trying to have deep discussions about any of the subjects that it had brought up earlier; you're just going back and forth in a loop. I didn't play further so I don't know if there's a satisfying conclusion but if I do finish I will update this.

Conclusions
I was so frustrated when I stopped trying to play that I thought I wouldn't recommend Cradle, but I found myself doing just that when I was talking to a friend I knew was fascinated by these concepts and has the patience to work around the bugs. So I think that's my conclusion; if you're really fascinated by these subjects (beauty vs ugliness, societal usefulness vs. social entitlement/drain on society, society vs individual, human vs computer, personal identity) then go for it, especially if it's on sale, but keep your expectations low and be ready to be patient.

Very cute and distinctive art style; I really enjoyed both that and the quirky characters. The game doesn't try to be all light and hilarity, but somehow manages to find humor in some pretty dark situations.

What broke this game for me was that it *actually broke.* If you don't follow the storyline as the designers wrote it to be played, the story breaks and you'll find yourself unable to progress. The problem is that the actions the designers wanted the player to take as the next sequence aren't blatantly obvious (at least to someone who doesn't share a brain with them). Maybe I simply missed the checkbox that would have allowed me to synchronize my thoughts with the developers and play the game perfectly as they imagined it would be played, so I could enjoy the story and characters.

After the third time having to start over because I could not go on, I decided to give up and not buy any other games from this publisher. And let me be absolutely clear: I googled my issue and tried to find every way to fix the problem. I have solved every single installment of the Myst saga, and beaten every single one. I have also beaten many other puzzle games and have no issue spending hours with a notepad to figure out a problem. This was a case of not having access to an item I needed to complete a puzzle because of not having done it in exactly the right order..but there was no indications of what that order might be.

I could simply follow a guide so that I could finish the game, but that doesn't feel like actually "playing" the puzzle to me, so I've left this one alone. If you really enjoy these characters and drawing style, just be aware that you might actually have to resort to doing that, or play over and over again, taking notes so that you can finally unlock the correct sequence that does not break. It's been awhile since I've played and my memory isn't crystal clear, but I believe I had some technical issues as well. Hopefully if you have a lot of patience and decide to go for it, you will not have any.

I really love this game. I got it along with over ten other games and intended to just have a quick look at it but I quickly got sucked in and kept wanting to solve "just one more puzzle." If you love puzzles, you should definitely check this game out; it has a lot of value for the price.

You follow the journey of Eos, a "lonely journeyman" whose journey you follow in the gorgeous dreamscape-like pictures you unlock when you solve each puzzle. You may become immersed in the timeless sensation of pondering the puzzle mechanics, because the ambient, zen-inducing music somehow works together with the artwork, the puzzle types, and the complete lack of timers and counters to create a feeling of timelessness. It's oddly relaxing and mentally invigorating at the same time.

Although there is no tutorial, the puzzles introduce new mechanics simply, allowing the player to become well- aquaintanted with a concept before adding it to other concepts in increasingly difficult tiers. I don't really want to detail puzzle mechanics here, since their discovery is part of the journey and the fun of the game, but for those who really wish to know: early puzzles simply involve sliding pieces in an order that doesn't overlap them or bump them together; later puzzles include such things as flipping, rotating, teleporting, shrinking and then enlarging pieces, and even activating colored paths by placing pieces over colored squares in correct sequences.

For those who love solving puzzles for puzzle's sake and who enjoy relaxation, this game would probably be spot on. However anyone who prefers additional challenges or pressures might find this game lacking. I can certainly understand why the developers chose not to include any counters or timers and that choice certainly adds to the feel they seem to have been going for, but adding those features as options might have allowed more people to enjoy this game. I think it might have also been a good idea to number the puzzles to allow for cooperative puzzle solving, since many people love to discuss puzzle solving with their friends and discuss what points they've reached or share hints -- just my opinion.

Pros:
+ Great zen-like Ambient music with free downloadable soundtrack (wish it was on steam through the steam music player though)
+ Gorgeous dreamscape artwork at the conclusion of each puzzle
+ Tiered Puzzle difficulty; puzzle mechanics are introduced simply and built into more complex puzzles later
+ Steam cards and 1 Steam achievement
+ Relaxing; no time pressure

Cons:
- no tutorial (this may turn some people off)
- only 1 Steam achievement
- no counters or timers so no way to measure success and compare with friends (this is not a competitive game!)

I've been playing for almost 4 hours and I'm still not done, and I was solving the puzzles in 10 to 15 minutes, though I imagine it would vary a lot. I would personally replay the whole thing, but I don't know about others. Still, given the price, I think you get your money's worth. I'm really glad I got it and I'd buy any sequels that come out. hint hint
