If you're taking a look at Oddysey, I assume you've played the base game.

FPS Gameplay
Not Recommended

I got into Elite for the exploration. for the ships, and for the flying. I feel like these are the elements that make Elite so special and unique. The FPS game play feels unnecessary, and recycled from other games. It seems like in Frontier's scramble to produce a somewhat finished looking product, they rushed and went and made what 90% of games today already have. It doesn't feel new, and there is nothing that makes it stand out from other games. And that's not to mention that half the time you can't even aim correctly because it's running at 20 fps on what is actually a good system (See performance.) On the other hand, the weapons are nicely detailed and handle well. There are also damage effects on objects which is cool to see.

On-foot Settlements
Recommended

One thing that I have been looking forward to in Elite since I got it has been ship interiors. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we are going to get it any time soon. So these settlements are the next best thing. And I must say, it has been done extremely well. The interiors are fully detailed, every hallway and room has tons of graphical features, from computers and screens on the wall, to beds and lockers you can raid. This is the kinds of quality I expect from Frontier and the type of quality that I hope we will get in ship interiors. There's terminals where you can pick up missions and locate specific areas of the facility and there are guards and AI around the settlement you can interact with, which will increase in the future. Well done on the Settlements.

New Planets and Atmospheres
Not Recommended

I think this is the main thing I bought Odyssey for. I'm an explorer, and being out in the black thousands of light-years from the bubble exploring a random planet I found is what I most enjoy. The new atmospheres are stunning and can make for some of the most beautiful moments I've ever had in game. I've made more screenshots in Odyssey than in the base game and Horizons combined. It just changes everything so much. You now have wonderful plant life and new biomes and terrains to explore. The nitrogen atmospheres create awesome colors all above and around you. So why do I not recommend it? Because it seems the billions of "unique" and "different" planets we were promised is not a reality. When looking on the game's Reddit page, you see hundred of instances of players finding duplicated ares on planets, and not a few times, sometimes there's hundreds. I really hope this is a glitch that get's fixed, because it is the main thing that brought me into the game. If this was done on purpose, then I don't know what to say, because that would be incredible disappointing and lead to my full switch over to Star Citizen.

Graphics
Mixed

The graphics have certainly been reworked, and some things are better. For example, ship explosions look much better and even create a shockwave. Planets look much nicer and lighting seems to be better, but is it really? When comparing screenshots of some scenery of Odyssey and Horizons, it becomes almost clear that in most instances Horizons actually looks much brighter and clearer. This will definitely be a personal thing, whether you like it darker or lighter. The ships have also been reworked, with higher resolutions textures and navigation and strobe lights. I really like this addition, it makes it more realistic and I was always wondering why there were not navigation lights on starships.

Performance
Not Recommended

Performance is absolutely terrible on a huge amount of systems. With insanely low fps, especially when near settlement or station where I previously has over 150, this is infuriating. What seemed like an upgrade actually turned out to be a down grade where many parts of the game become almost unbearable and start to run like much of Star Citizen. If you don't have an extremely beefy PC, wait until performance updates are all completed. There are regular fixes, but you won't be able to see every single fix, some are targeted for certain specs and will see a lot while others will not.

Overall
Not Recommended

If you're looking to get the game, I would say wait. Wait and see if Frontier actually decides to commit to their product and to their promises. We need to see a lot more planets and planet types, we need to see everything we were promised, and they need to stop deceiving the players and be more open and transparent about what they want to do and what they can't do. I believe that if this happens, Elite will become a much better game and it's fanbase will become much more satisfied than it is now. But at the moment, the game is half finished, with developers rushing to get in whatever they can to declare that it was worth what so many spent. It is sad to see an amazing space exploration, combat, and trading simulator come down to the level of first person shooters and horrible performance.
