Your own mindset mostly determines how much you like this game.

For me it was fun learning DayZ. Afterwards though.. you'll have to see for yourself what you make of it.

DayZ is a bittersweet game of survival where you stand your ground in the vast maps and fight for resources while you develop the story of that particular run/life. The original DayZ originated from an Arma 2 mod. Bohemia Interactive has chosen to hire the mod creator (who already quit the job at bohemia) and make the game standalone. DayZ is not a hop-on quickly and play a bit game. You need to commit. The major negatives i see a lot of people point out are the fact there aren't many updates and that the game is generally not fun.

Updates are all in all not a problem anymore. Bohemia has done a great job pushing out updates the past year and they've added more new content during the virus period than 2015-2019 combined, possibly.

If people think the game isn't fun then that's fine. You can play this game straightforward: Loot, Fight, Die. It's only when you open up and try looking for special relationships and experiences that you have a chance of seeing what this game has to offer. It's no surprise most of the good reviews are people describing their own stories on this game.

This (=consecutively enjoying DayZ runs), of course, is not easy though:

A big issue i personally face and you will face too is the fact that the hours you put into a life is rarely worth it for the encounters you make. Encountering players is a thrill and no game gets you as pumped up with adrenaline as DayZ before a firefight or encounter, yet they're short lived or just plain boring most of the time. The experiences are very straightforward, and that really sucks to me. You really need to find someone who's down to adventure to actually make your DayZ life worth having lived.

Personally it was a blast for me learning this game, not just because of the stories i've made, but how difficult it was. I do recommend playing vanilla again once in awhile and trying to communicate despite how boring and difficult vanilla can be. When you approach someone chances are you will get a 5.56 your way, but chances are you will have the most memorable life in your DayZ history. Modded pvp servers are pvp sweatlords most of the time (might be a good thing if you're a competitive player), and there are hackers on vanilla official servers unfortunately. There are vanilla community servers you can hop onto without any worries though. Lightly modded is a very good choice and personally what i'm playing most right now. DO NOT play official vanilla. Play community vanilla, otherwise you're bound to meet cheaters. At least on community servers admins might be able to find them.

DayZ is bound to get you some exceptional experiences, adrenaline pumped fights, and moments where you feel like you suck ass and you just want to quit after seeing the death screen. That's the whole point, so keep pushing forward and do your best to make what you can of this apocalyptic setting. If you don't, then this game is useless for you. Just prepare to waste way too many hours of your life doing so.

In conclusion: the game is not perfect and is boring as hell sometimes, but the goods outweigh the bads for me personally. I find myself taking big breaks from the game after having stressed myself out way too much, yet i always keep coming back because there's just something special about DayZ for me.

I seriously recommend SovietWomble's video essays on DayZ. They're good insight on how this game works and what Bohemia Interactive did wrong and did right making this game standalone.

Thank god it is getting attention from the devs again, please let it get attention from the community too! This is a great zombie game. Definitely able to keep up, even if it was released in 2013. (I played many hours of the beta when it was out.)
