had some discussions with older fans, and despite not being chuds they made some points about the history of this game's IP and how it is basically defaced by the limitations of the 2026 game's format and presentation in other aspects, and i have to agree there. this could have been a new IP, and may have had more merit as an artistic example if liberated from its history rather than colored by its own influence on that history. it is also entirely possible for a very similar aesthetic and themes and narrative to be explored, since Bungie has a very strong thematic continuity between their differing IPs even in the face of aesthetic and gameplay differences, So...

MARATHON 2026 Is, blindingly gorgeous tragedy.

It still has a chance,
And if it doesnt, then it should have had one.
But it never really deserved a chance at all, did it?
and that is what hurts me the most.
I still hope that it can make something of its investment, because i dont know if anything could replace it for a while, and maybe its still worth it somehow. I try not to wallow in the despair of a commercial product, but the fact that this is my first personal experience with this genre, and the first for many given its striking presence with those of my generation who connect with it, makes the game more important to me than a commercial product could ever hope to be in earnest.

its also $40, which in 2026 is prohibitive even for an American market :P a lot of dedicated people prefer games with a more sustainable singleplayer, if they're going to be asking an above-average upfront price for a live service, there is expectation of an above-average upfront content pool ("upfront content" being, in my view, content limited to the expression of a singular user and their connections; stuff that doesn't require upkeep from the developer), and MARATHON 2026 does not provide even a notion of this kind of content. it relies entirely on the player's faith in the project, and gathers that faith exclusively through the good will captured by its art and gameplay design, with the potential for progress being just as ethereal as always with these AAA releases... truly, there is no part of this game's story which is yet to be safe from the shame of its nature as product.

Product that has not the potential, in context, to succeed beyond its borders, is never able to be seen as art, even by the generous eye of an artist. It is so again and again, that the system itself corrupts the love that the world would otherwise be free to share with itself. the love between a player and his game, and its developers.

redefines what it means to be a shooter game. very fun gameplay, and backed up by a really interesting design ethos that seeks to create an arcade infantry combat simulation with dynamic, emergent strategy and tactics rather than simply building around the gunplay. The gunplay is excellent, too, but it is working in concert with all the other systems rather than as a base.

Very Hard. One of the best produced games of the last 10 years, absolutely a favorite. sewageratpunk post apocalypse ecosystem punishment experience, perfected. Soundtrack is special, design is special, feel is special, look is special. You will find it hard to uncover a more artistically NAILED piece. Encourage you to try it out, try to get through it at least once. Blinder is better, just one tip: Don't assume rules exist. Experiment with everything, especially the ecosystem. This is the only way to survive.
