Underneath the adorable veneer of Atelier Sophie is a turbo-powered gyroscopic hamster wheel that will suck you into its vortex for hours in pursuit of the perfect creation. Puzzling together different materials into powerful items that are uniquely yours is an exercise who's joy defies explanation. You very quickly realize that you just spent three hours making two items to be used themselves as ingredients for your next magnum opus. It is engrossing. It is delirious. You WILL perform an involuntary chef's kiss when you make the most exquisite bomb to date.

This is all framed within a very light but always intriguing story with surprisingly wonderful characters (shoutouts to my boy Fritz, a true man of culture). Combat is sort of awkward but provides you with a more than serviceable place to use your items, and really, what do you expect out of a 6yo JRPG who's focus is NOT combat. And every aspect of the game is another spoke in the alchemical wagon wheel as you soon branch out from creating battle items to everything under the sun, including gathering tools, weapons and armor (hell yeah), items specifically crafted for making money, character-specific items, story items, items that enhance/modify your alchemy, the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cauldrons themselves that you do all your alchemy in, etc etc. Purchase at your own peril if the words "crafting JRPG" didn't immediately turn you off the way they turned me off at first.
