This game is hard to say yes or no to, but I certainly wouldn't pay full price for it. On the one hand, it's nice to have a casual ARPG that is, for the most part, easy to play and get a handle on. On the other, it's riddled with bugs both for gameplay and settings.

I do like the graphics, it does stay in line with the previous game being kind of simplistic and cartoony, but that's that whole deal with the Torchlight series, so I'm not unhappy with it. It does also work very well on a lower end system like mine, which is nice, since hardware upgrades aren't particularly affordable.

That it doesn't require TOO much thought is actually nice, and aside from a couple specific lore bosses, mechanics are not overly difficult and don't require much learning. Great for casual players.

Unlike games like Path of Exile or Diablo, it's not super in depth insofar as skill trees go. However, it is also very limiting, and sometimes choices in the skill trees feel very bad. You're forced to spend multiple points in a skill to get any sort of upgrade to it (assuming you don't get "free" skill points on gear), without any benefit in between the "tier" upgrades (this applies only to active skills; passive skills are generally fine). Too, those gear-based skill points are a double-edged sword- if you upgrade that gear with something else that doesn't have them, you lose out, and if you end up maxing out the skill manually, those points provide no additional benefit.

The game actually does not include subtitles, despite the store page saying so, which is extremely annoying, because the sound settings are music and master volume; you have no options for changing UI or sound effects or dialogue on their own. As well, it does not save video settings. Every time I enter the game, I have to change it to increase quality and enable antialiasing (yes I have a crap computer, but it runs this game perfectly fine). I shouldn't have to do this.

SPOILERS BELOW.

For gameplay, there are certain bugs that are extremely frustrating and/or irritating, the most egregious of which is pets disappearing when taking a portal out of your fort. This is especially frustrating for returning to other areas of the game, or specifically the Dun'Djinn endgame dungeons. As well, it can be very difficult to see some textures (specifically, where the ground is actually burning) so you can end up taking damage and not knowing where is "safe."

Also, the skill trees are both interesting and also completely out of whack with one another, even within the same class. However, due to both limited skill slots and the aforementioned skill point issue, deciding between skills doesn't feel meaningful or compelling at times, and by and large, the Relic trees are far more useful than general class skills.

Speaking of which, the weapon-based skills in the relic trees feel absolutely awful, aside from maybe the Electrode tree. Except for the Bane tree, all of them seem to change based on your class to include your class' primary weapon (e.g., Blood Drinker will also include the Digitus weapon for Dusk Mages), but using an alternate weapon (such as the Focus for Dusk Mages) is completely irrelevant when doing so.

I am not a fan of the enchanting system - you've almost (or have) completed the game by the time it becomes available. And upgrading alts? Pain in the neck, since most of the gear worth saving has class-specific stat lines (+1 skill level/+% damage to skill for x class) that are useless for alts of a different class. And you can't enchant gear without enchanting slots. Which you don't come across til late in the game.

All that said, it's not a GREAT sequel to TL2, and that's okay; I don't think it was ever intended to be. However, I do wish more effort were put into it after it was switched to Perfect World to get rid of some of the bugs and do some QoL passes. And maybe make the game a little bit longer, too; that it's so short is also kind of a small gripe I have.
