I really enjoyed this game, and it offered up more playtime than I was expecting, even when going for 100%. The bosses can be quite punishingly difficult at times, which I wasn't quite expecting, but with enough patience I got through, making it all the more satisfying.

There is tight platforming to be had here, with your primary ability being the cloudstep: for every enemy you hit in midair you earn a double jump, which can then stack. In conjunction with the other abilities drip-fed at a well-judged pace, traversing the world feels amazing when it clicks and you're in the zone. This is lent into during the more difficult sections of the game, where the only way to get to the next room is by chaining attacks in midair, with no floor or platforms to let you take a breather. It really does feel amazing.

More is done with the story than most games of this genre and style, which is refreshing and kept me guessing with the twists it deals out; coupled with the acquisition of new abilities this leads to a good feeling of progression. There's even a change in game structure part way through (which I won't spoil), which also surprised me.

The dialogue contains high amounts of wit and charm alike and had me laughing out loud a number of times; it features plenty of fourth wall-breaking, which I personally enjoy. One main drawback of the game I found was the need to backtrack a little more than I'd like, which is mainly caused by fast travel points being few and far between. Granted I was intent on finding all of the collectables, but being able to travel to the start of each area at the very least would have helped alleviate this.

One gameplay element which I would have liked to have seen expanded upon was the ability to conserve the horizontal momentum provided by grapple points by hitting and cloudstepping other objects. I'm sure this is used by speedrunners, and it is necessary to get one of the achievements (winning the race in the DLC), but I would have enjoyed more of a focus on that feeling of immense speed that this technique provides the player.

In all, this game will be a delight to old-school platformer fans, whilst the familiar upgrade tree and other quality of life features offered by a modern game makes this an excellent offering to those not versed in the platformers of old, and really accentuates the great gameplay on offer here.

Not a terrible game, but enough flaws to consider looking past it

I am on a journey, playing though each mainline Assassin's Creed game (currently on Syndicate).

I don't quite know what to think of Revelations. The fact that decades have passed since we last saw Ezio, and that he has travelled far from Italy, means that characters and environments which fans have come to love are stripped away, and what replaced it did not suffice, in my view. I struggled to follow the events of the story despite trying my best, and I eventually became apathetic toward it. The side missions in AC games are mostly repetitive activities to flesh out gameplay time between missions, so that wasn't to be the saving grace for the lacking story. Several interesting mechanics were added such as various bomb types, which do allow for more angles of approach in stealth and combat which I did enjoy greatly, but the crafting system is needlessly obtuse and dampens the experience.

Although elements of the architecture in Constantinople were interesting to me, on the whole I wasn't that excited by it, and the drab colour palette compared to the vibrance of Italy didn't help either. The extra abilities offered by the hookblade are a decent addition, but is more the kind of QOL feature expected of the next entry of a series, so is nothing to write home about.

From a gameplay perspective it is very similar to the previous entries, so was fun enough, but not being invested in the story gave me less impetus to continue; there was certainly a point at which I was pushing through just to finish it.

One element which I did enjoy was discovering more about Altair through Ezio's eyes and the events surrounding that, especially towards the end. Although these moments were interesting and satisfying, they were few and far between, and didn't quite feel worth playing through the entire game to experience.
I am also a fan of the modern day and sci-fi sections, so for those parts to be different and disappointing was another blow to my enjoyment of the game.

Realistically, knowing what I do now, I think in my crusade of playing the entire AC series I could have been content just watching the cutscene supercut for this game on YouTube, although that may feel like cheating. I would have missed out on some fun gameplay, but when there are other, better AC games out there, it wouldn't be much of a loss. This isn't a terrible game, but it has enough flaws and better entries that you may be better off playing them, and watching the story if you're as invested in the series as I am.

I am on a journey playing through the mainline Assassin's Creed games (currently playing Syndicate).

It's a common narrative that Assassin's Creed II was a poster child of a sequel; one which ran with the concepts of the original, and more fully realised its potential. Brotherhood manages to do this a second time in spectacular fashion; harnessing the characters we grew to love from AC II, expanding the variety of side activities, and introducing additional interesting gameplay loops.

I was surprised when I realised the entire game took place in a single city, Rome, seeing as the previous and many of the later games contain several cities/locations to traverse. However, it soon became clear that this wasn't an issue; the Rome depicted here is large and contains sufficiently varied districts to not feel samey. In fact, this is the world I spent the most time in up until this point (39 hrs compared to 17 hrs and 28 hrs in AC 1 and AC II respectively), and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

The story holds up compared to AC II, and sees Ezio systematically disassemble the Borgia family by hidden blade, whilst he reaches a new stage in his life where he is looked up to by his Assassin initiates. This brings me to the Brotherhood recruitment system, which is new for this entry, and allows the deployment of Assassins to help Ezio out in stealth or combat. This opens the door for more strategy than before, and adds variety to the stealth/combat loop, which is welcome. The power you feel when calling in a crossbow airstrike is immense!

Events in Renaissance Rome tie into the sci-fi and modern day elements in a way that excited me as a fan of that side of the series, but is not so intrusive as to put off people who are only in it for the historical tales. Graphically, Brotherhood looks a chunk better than AC II, namely since there's less pop-in which helps avoid the break in immersion. Also there's a (perhaps intense) ambient occlusion implementation which gives it depth and makes it look a more modern game, while helping it look a bump up from AC II.

In all, this game still holds up and offers a more dense 'Classic' Assassin's Creed experience than its predecessors, carrying the momentum of quality from AC II in terms of narrative and gameplay, whilst bringing its own new spin.

I am on a journey, playing each mainline Assassin's Creed game in order.
Although I appreciated the first Assassin's Creed, this sequel tore the door open when it came to the scope and detail of the world and hence the feeling of place, whilst telling a brilliant, engaging story about a cheeky chappy who due to circumstance grows into a man with responsibility (whilst retaining his cheekiness for the most part).

Learning about this era of Italy was really interesting to me, and I took pleasure in reading most of the database entries. Travelling from Acre to Damascus in AC1, it was clear that they were two distinct places (the fact you had to manually ride from one to the other made that very clear), but going into the countryside in this game feels like a real departure from the vibrant city of Firenze, adding to this sense of place.

The story and its missions create the template for the sequels to come: an impressionable young man who gets dragged into the Assassin vs Templar feud, and more scripted assassinations when compared to AC1, as well as tailing etc.. This is no bad thing, but it's interesting to note that the format changes little for the next several iterations. The characters are likeable, namely Ezio himself and Leonardo Da Vinci, and I felt real investment for the majority of the story.

One element which took me out of the immersion is the severe pop-in which is clearly visible throughout, namely with people; Polygon Face swiftly transforms into a respectable passerby at a short distance. This shouldn't stop you playing this game, but it's something to consider.

This game introduces several side missions which give various activities to do, which offers more content if you're into that. I personally did some of it until it became too repetitive, but the main story missions and exploring the world provided enough gameplay for me.

I enjoy the modern day sections (which can be divisive), since it really carries that narrative with Desmond et al forward and contributes to the bigger picture and the sci-fi elements.

I would thoroughly recommend this game despite its age, and I hope you are drawn in to its world and story as I was!

Last year, almost to the day, marked the beginning of my playing though the entire mainline Assassin's Creed series, and it of course started with this game.

Elements of it feel somewhat dated, such as the dialogue audio quality and animations, but visually it's surprisingly good for a 2007 release, especially at higher resolutions and with postprocessing effects using ReShade or similar. On the whole I'd say it stands up today; there are certainly worse first titles of a game series. It was surprising to me how mechanics prevalent in later entries actually made their debut in the first game. The freerunning feels pretty good, which is impressive seeing as this is its debut and it was groundbreaking at the time. I also enjoyed the combat, especially the heavy attack which leaves you vulnerable but deals massive damage.

Having played AC III and Black Flag in years previous, I appreciated the more stripped-back nature of the game, which lacks the myriad of map icons all clamouring for your addled attention. This brings the player's focus more toward the story, which sees you travel between the Assassins' stronghold in Masyaf and 3 cities.

The story missions mainly consist of assassinating targets, with other activities such as beat-up interrogations playing smaller roles than in later titles, contributing to the lean nature of this game. This focus made the story feel more cohesive to me, I suppose since I didn't spend 5-10 hours between each story beat doing side missions. The freedom in how to approach these assassinations is liberating, and something the series shifted away from for some time. Altair may have fewer abilities at his disposal, but this forces you to use the base mechanics of freerunning, crowd blending and throwing knives etc. to achieve the goal.

The story is decent and ends in a dramatic way, and the modern day sections set up Desmond's character, who appears in several of the proceeding titles. This game's story is very important for fans of the overarching story of the series, which I very much am, and remains a touchpoint for the next several titles.

In all, this game still has a place in a 2020 gamer's virtual game shelf, namely for big fans of the series.

This little game surprised and delighted me; a curious mix of elements from Celeste and Breath of the Wild, given its main goal of reaching the peak, and the pure excitement of exploring the nooks and crannies of the island.
The manner in which your movement options are drip-fed to you gives a feeling of power when you can reach places you couldn't before, and the gliding feels absolutely incredible, with a sense of speed when divebombing that I was not prepared for!

The dialogue is witty, relatable and wholesome which got a number of chuckles out of me, and made me eager to hear what all the varied characters have to say.

As someone who was once skeptical when it came to this sort of short, lighthearted experience, I would recommend this game to pretty much anyone, especially for the price!

This game is *so* fun with friends, what with the myriad of clever user-made gamemodes; as well as the sandbox mode, where you can mess about with user-made creations, or create your own. A must-have game!
