I urge you to nominate Deus Ex for the "Test of Time" Steam award in 2016! I'm thankful that Steam is running these awards, as it's pushed me to write a review.

Deus Ex expanded and built upon early gaming concepts in a way I've rarely, if ever, seen since its release 16 years ago. It can be seen as a culmination of a variety of games from the 90s, including Thief and System Shock, allowing for unprecedented player choice in handling objectives and masterful world building.

Given the technology of the time, Deus Ex gave players a stupendous level of control in how they wanted to play through each level of what is a surprisingly lengthy experience. You can dump points into guns and upgrade armor and go in guns blazing, wiping out all opposition - remember, a headshot is a lethal takedown. Or focus on stealth takedowns with crossbows and stun prods and quiet footwork. Or perhaps avoid direct confrontation altogether and hack everything you can. Yet again, maybe you've found an access panel and are now sneaking through hidden areas of the level. The early levels provide some subtle (and less-subtle, in fairness) hints on what options you have. Later levels assume you are smart enough to actually investigate and explore if you wish, a pleasant difference from many modern games that continue hand-holding until the very end. All that said, the flexibility prevents you from feeling stuck in the later levels - there is always an alternative. Particularly impressive is that the game has truly been built to support this, even from a narrative standpoint. Objectives completed in odd orders, or simply left incomplete, will trigger differing dialoges and general sotry experiences. While 2000s tech didn't allow for the level of branching storytelling now possible, it is very impressive for its age.

The overall experience also presents a very skillfully crafted narrative. Deus Ex came out before high end graphics required high end art budgets, and you can tell that time and money went into writing and narrative design instead. Never rushed and never too slow, Deus Ex builds an atmosphere of global conspiracy and fear within a cyberpunk world, revealing and opening up its player driven story much like a good novel. I really cannot emphasize how effectively the Deus Ex team told a story through their game - I have seen this repeated maybe 3-4 more times since. Deus Ex provides the groundwork for real thought and discussion, from a rapidly developing surveillence society to the human need for structure and order. As such, Deus Ex winds up being an interesting, deep narrative experience coupled with excellent, robust gameplay.

This game is a bargain at almost any price, let alone the pittance asked for these days. It is also still a top-notch experience, having stood for 16 years with little true competition. I ask for your nominations for the "Test of Time" award.

This is a delightful combination between a simulation game and a puzzle game. The UI is elegant and flows well, especially with recent updates which puts more information at your fingertips. This is one of my favorite sim games, with market considerations, timing releases, and strategizing about when and if to patent a drug. On the flip side, you have to puzzle out your factory layout to ensure you use space efficiently while also keeping costs as low as possible. It will often present interesting pro/cons considerations when building a layout between space efficient vs cost efficient machines.

Definitely get this if you don't mind mixing your building/sim games with your puzzle games. Also - don't expect a pure sandbox mode. Befitting a puzzle game environment, you play a series of scenarios with defined endpoints. This is good, as unlike something like Prison Architect, this is a lot about building to that endpoint efficiently as opposed to building a factory and then maintaining it going forward.

I love it, you should get it!

This is by far the most powerful game I've ever played. It is difficult to say much about this without spoiling it, but it is quite a ride, especially at the end. I would describe this as much more cerebral than the Stanley Parable, with many ways to get trapped within one bit of meaning or another. If you want to play a game and have it touch you, move you, and make you think about creativity and how much you know a person, play this game. In any case, this is possibly the best $10 I've ever spent.
