Recommended. Absolutely. Buy it.

I don't think it's possible to truly express how much I've enjoyed Dead Rising over the years; it's the one game I care enough about to attempt unlocking every achievement, and despite the story mode's linear timeline of events, it carries an immense amount of replayability that's bolstered in no due short to the sandbox design and leveling mechanics. And that's before touching upon the peculiar "Infinity Mode", which functions like a sandbox with a survival twist (you have a "hunger" meter that's always draining your health, which demands scavenging for limited resources if you want to stay alive for long) but without any saving whatsoever. This game was unlike any other when it first launched on the Xbox 360, and in some way, still is; there's no experience that quite captures the dark-yet-whimsical fun you'll find in Dead Rising, not even it's sequels (although DR2 and it's spinoff Off The Record are definitely worth your time).

The time limit in story mode presents the player with a challenge that many are probably not familiar with. It's important to manage your time if you want to win, and while the game does create occasional lulls inbetween your primary objective to take advantage of however you see fit, you'll find that the greatest reward besides XP or beneficial items is more time to kill..literally, if you so desire. It's like a fun break after some hard work, and it feels more gratifying than simply ignoring the story because you earned it. The photography system encourages creativity, experimentation, and good timing to get the juiciest shots; of course, there's not much incentive to take pictures after you max out your level, but it's still a neat little mechanic that plays into Frank West's character really well.

It's not a perfect game, of course. There's still the occasional bugs left over from the original game, and of course, the infamous survivor AI is present in this game as well (I believe they wanted this port to be as "true to the original experience as possible", or something like that). It's true, they will likely drive you nuts at some time or another, and the chances merely increase with each one that joins your party. It stinks, but it is manageable; setting waypoints towards the safe house and guarding them closely has worked pretty well for me in the past.

The game's unforgiving in the first place, and will be difficult for new players, but the leveling system lets you come back stronger; not to mention that due to the static triggers of story events, you'll be able to develop a plan to take on everything the game throws at you. On the other hand, should you want to explore the story but keep on goofing off, you will feel it eventually. Dead Rising loves to throw sucker punches to the uninitiated. With some time and practice, anyone can put the beatdown on it, though.

I won't lie, I'm very biased in favor of this game, but that's only because it's earned so much of my praise for it. It's imperfect and flawed in some noticeable areas, but I can accept that and live with it, because there's so much good to outweigh the bad. It really is something everyone should try once, even if they're not a fan of zombie or sandbox games. Even now and I can still hear that music , clear as I did back in 2006..Give it a try and you'll understand why Dead Rising got such a sizable cult following in the first place.
