ROCK AND STONE! (WE'RE RICH)

Consistently one of the best co-op experiences I've came back to every now and again. You can dive into a cave as one of four classes, all of which can survive on their own but will also compliment each other by assuming various roles when present. Need to go through? Digger. Need to go up? Gunner. Need to go down? Engineer. The Scout is also present.

Deep Rock has endless replayability, combining randomly generated caverns with different missions, environments, modifiers and difficulty levels. You can also work towards assignments, which take you through chains of missions in order to get a larger reward at the end, ranging from resources to new weapons. Each of the Seasons also add new mission types. Most importantly, there's no FOMO! You can switch to any of the seasons, previous or current, and get all the rewards for free just from playing. Management has dictated you can't even pay for those rewards if you wanted to, you have to earn them, miners..

TL;DR DWARVES IN SPACE

Sometimes hectic, sometimes maddening, always fun. 5/5 would recommend to anyone not tall enough to be a helldiver or space marine.

Dad of Boy, good game. 9/10

Combat is well polished, an older hack and slash format done very very well. Variety is a bit lacking in terms of weapon options, but playing through Hard I felt it was a decent and challenging experience. I am, however, biased as I am a Souls slut and enjoyed the dodging and parrying. I'm sure other games like the Batman Arkham series has similar combat. I hope in the sequel they commit to greater variety, or even a weapon swapping combo mechanic so that if they really go in on the elemental enemies we can seamlessly swap between the appropriate damage types to take on mixed crowds.

The direction is phenomenal with them designing the game to be one take, with well disguised loading and cinematics always starting from the players perspective of Kratos. Any bits of travel/climbing potentially dubbed "boring" have always well acted pieces of relevant exposition/relationship beats between characters playing during. This will happen at least once during any necessary climb/travel, and I believe that anyone playing straight through the story at a normal pace without worrying about heading back for collectables will never not have a piece of story to experience. Every character is also well characterised, the dwarves especially are my favourite. Broks playful crankiness and crassness compared to Sindri's anal cleanliness and sometimes slapstick actions were welcome pieces of comedic relief throughout.

I've seen some negative reviews complaining about the story being too simple, I believe this is a strength. The story IS simple to serve the purpose of telling us a classic hero's journey/man and his son tale whilst delving deep into characters' development and their relationships. The main cast know what they must do, and they set out to do it, regardless of hiccups on the way. Imo, you should approach this game initially as a narrative experience first, and a hack and slash second.

Special mention for Atreus being the least annoying AI companion I've ever had in a game. I'd consider him the first one anywhere close to good. Even some of the things they have him say off handed are helpful. I went back to an area which would have had me walk for a bit over a bridge of nothing, to which Atreus remarked something to the degree of "Why aren't you using the (quick travel) doorway?". Saved me time travelling, as well as being intuitive enough to actively use, and let passively help, in combat.

Good game. Am sad I will have to avoid spoilers from the sequel for years to come as I will not be getting a PS5 but will patiently wait for the PC port that hopefully releases eventually.

I really enjoyed playing it (played to 100% quite easily, in game hints allow you to find health/magic upgrades, a quick search of the map once all powers are found can bag you all the shinies)

However, I don't think its the contender for best game of 2021 like the trailers suggest. There's a basic storyline you can follow or ignore, it won't affect the game. Unfortunately it's rather short, but you can expect that for a title so cheap. I at least got below a £1/hr game time value after my second play-through to grab the final achievement I missed. I view that as a win, some titles £40+ won't get that value/hr out of me.

The game mechanics are simple, but polished. I found maxing out magic a bit OP in comparison to melee. The puzzles are your classic Zelda style puzzles, but they tend to stick to doing one of two things which is either "shoot this thing, then go here and shoot it, and then here and shoot it" or "hit this switch, now run around this obstacle 6 times hitting another". Some puzzles do nothing but fluff the game time a bit, adding no challenge. Fine for similar titles 10 years ago, a bit disappointing for today.

The bosses are a high point in the game for their stylisation and for being a relatively satisfying resolution for each corner of the map, but can offer little challenge if you figure out their gimmick or have a basic understanding of dodging/telegraphing. Another high point is the sound design, your little bird feet go tippy tappy up ladders.

All in all, whilst I enjoyed it, I don't view it as a great game. I do, however, view it as a solid start into bigger and better games. You can tell that this was made by the guys who made Titan Souls, but I feel as if they thought they had to tone down the difficulty to make this larger game and its world more accessible. I'd love to see them build upon this in perhaps a sequel or a new IP. With the skills they gained building the world of Death's Door, I look forward to their future attempt to support their excellent boss encounters with richer environments containing more challenges that actually feel rewarding to solve, rather than coddling them with simplified point and click fluff and backtracking.

3.5/5, if you aren't looking for revolutionary, and enjoyed Titan Souls, or just want a short and sweet game, I'd recommend giving it a go.
