While Factorio's ancestry is base building / city building - it belongs to the small class of games which define a new genre.

Amazing setting and atmosphere keeps drawing you forward the entire journey. The gameplay is challenging enough to keep you problem solving along the way, but never too difficult to have you stuck in one place for long. Minimal color pallete and score are used to great effect. All the parts combine into a pretty trancendent game experience.

To those who aren't inclined toward "dark" games: the description may be acurate but there is also a lot of whimsy and charm here. You may want to give it a shot.
