edit: it's funny to see the downvotes just because I tell Telltale not to put ads in their game lol

And let it be story

"Welcome to the wonderful world of The Walking Dead again, my friends! I trust you'll have a tremendous experience while we're travelling through the story".

That's what my imaginary guide would tell you if the game was a tourist attraction. And in some ways, it is. You have no impact on the story at all.

Sometimes you make decisions like "we leave the place now / we are not leaving, it's safe here" and you pause the game and you wonder for a minute which one should you choose. You consider the possible outcomes and the relationships with the characters. But soon you realize that there's no way Telltale would just create two possible branches with real decisions. If they want you to stay, you will. If they want you to leave, you will, no matter what you choose.

Regardless of this I enjoyed my time with the game (3 episodes are out at the writing of this review). Still an interesting story, and despite the ancient technology (will get back to it later) the visuals are great, the characters look good, I really like it.

If I would be an engine, I'd upgrade myself

Too bad that they did not really improve anything on their engine after all these years. You still have to stare at the title screen and you have to press a button to load the main menu which
  1. takes ages
  2. why don't they preload it in the background while you're staring at the title screen?

It's also a pain to navigate through the menu, even with a controller. It's totally unresponsive, it won't buffer inputs until it finished animating so if you want to browse through the episodes from 1 to 3, you have to just press "right" to select episode 2, then you have to wait until the end of times for the animation to finish and only THEN press "right" again. If you push the stick to the "right" two times, that simply won't work.

Unfortunately navigating through the menu was not the only navigation issue I had. At one or two points it happened that the game told me to use "Left Stick" to do something like pushing something towards the door. Well, the door was left-ish on the screen so I moved to to left. It took me a death to realize I should just pull Left Stick forward instead.

Oh, and one thing I wanted to mention:

TELLTALE COULD YOU PLEASE STOP PUTTING F*CKING ADS IN A 23 € GAME? I'LL PURCHASE YOUR OTHER GAMES WHEN I FEEL LIKE, OKAY? DON'T SPAM ME WITH "PURCHASE SEASON 2" WHEN I FINISH AN EPISODE. I ALREADY HAVE SEASON 2 AND IT WAS GREAT. BUT I HATE SEEING ADS IN A PAID GAME, SO F*CK OFF!

Now I feel better.

Summary

Pros:

  • Nice characters, great visuals. Love the post-apocalyptic cities, visually fantastic.
  • Enjoyable story. If you can accept that you have no impact on it, it's nice. And that is all the reason I'm still purchasing this series and still looking forward to the new episodes. And this is the reason why I recommend this game for others to play.

Cons:

Everything else:

  • Long loading times
  • Navigating the menu is a pain
  • If I can't really affect the outcome, that's fine. But please stop telling me that the story is tailored by how I play every single time because apart from a few extra dialog lines it's just not true.
  • Advertisements everywhere

TL;DR: If you like The Walking Dead, get it for the story

Short story, nice visuals. Too bad that the final bossfight is so unfair that I almost pulled my hair off. I literally put this game away for a year back in January 2016 just to come back to it today, almost a year later and finish the bossfight and witness a cutscene with desynced audio (might be just me though).

I feel sorry for Woolfe since the environment, the characters, the whole art design of the game is superb. However, when you feel like you go crazy and just want to ragequit (which I did) and uninstall the game (which I didn't up to this point) as you're approaching the end.. that ruins everything...

Ta-ta-ta-ta-ta

I don't know what to say. Have you ever played a game which was so good and so bad at once?

Crush the evil plans

I would love to just select "Recommended" and write "Buy this game, it's awesome" then click "Submit", because it is. But why, oh why have the developers done the things to their game they did?

Gogoh Invaders from Spaaaaace

For starters, the game is a solid shoot 'em up. As you progress, you can change your robot's features by selecting the modules to use when the game offers to. You have a special charge attack, a Big Red Button, more than awesome music, more than awesome animations in the style of a late 70s anime. You have achievements, leaderboards, trading cards, ...

So what's wrong with this game?

Everything which is not gameplay-related:

  • You cannot change resolution. You have 640x480 or something similarly small resolution to deal with like it or not. This results all of your other open applications resizing themselves when you quit.
  • Also, with such a low resolution you cannot use your Steam overlay while in-game.
  • You cannot switch between windowed mode and full screen. The game asks you if you want to go to full screen when you start, and that's it. Once you make your choice, you will stick to it until you quit.
  • No options menu. At all. So no volume sliders, no control rebindings, nothing.
  • You cannot pause. The devs mentioned somewhere that it's intentional as they want to simulate the arcade feeling where you cannot pause. Yeah, but in the arcade you dropped your quarter and played while it lasted without leaving. However, while you play your computer your girlfriend will occasionally call you (if you have one), the kids will call you (if you have those), and the postman will ring the bell so you need to leave your computer in the middle of your game.
  • Related to the previous issue: when you press Esc, the game just goes back to the menu. Without asking.

Why do I feel angry about all of these? Because this is one of the best shooters I've ever played. Love the style, love the graphics, the music, the controls. Yet they managed to release this masterpiece with all these issues which is unforgivable.

Buy this game for the fun, or avoid it because of the technical execution... Your choice. For myself, I think I'll keep having fun with it. But also keep asking the question hopelessly to myself: "Why, oh why have the devs done this to their wonderful game?".

So, you're Dex

Can you imagine how a 2D side-scrolling open world action RPG looks like? I couldn't. But we have a blue haired protagonist in a cyberpunk world and I wanted to see it. Probably you should, too.

13807001

You're playing Dex, a blue haired young girl who wakes up in her bed and finds herself being chased. Apart from the very first section where you have a specified place to reach, you can move freely in the beautifully crafted 2D city of Harbor Prime. The whole city is truly amazing! A great mix of the modern future with the reality of the lowlifers. Sometimes you feel you just have to stop and inspect the ads or the graffities on the walls. And you do all these while listening to the pretty nice music themes associated with each district.

Close your eyes, little bird

The game comes with a few localization included. I haven't checked this before purchasing and I was totally surprized that the game even supports Hungarian. And mostly it's a great localization, but at some (not much, only a few) places it was mixed with the original English texts which caused some confusions. I was doing a mission and I had two dialog choices. Unfortunately both of them were the same. The only difference was that one of them was in English, the other one was in Hungarian. Because they were the same otherwise, I could not decide what to choose. Picked one randomly, it turned out I just refused to help that person further. So yeah. And the translation also had some spelling errors in it. Despite of this, it's still a very nice addition to have and I'm grateful for the developers that they were doing this.

They are coming for you

You can develop your lovely character by putting points to her abilities when leveling up and you can get augmentations too. Plus, there is a free DLC you should install which provides three special suits to choose from with unique abilities. You can get the one which suits your playstyle.

Once you start doing missions, you can fight, shoot, run. And you can also enter the cyberspace to hack vending machines, cctv cameras, enemy turrets and computers. For real-life fights you use your health pool, for cyberspace hacking you use your focus points. Once they are gone you are dropped out from the cyberspace and suffer a little damage too.

Spending skillpoints is possible on hacking abilities, weapon mastery, agility, etc. I played through the game by not putting a single point for weapon mastery since I preferred hacking myself through it. So if you want to blast through with weapons, or want to hide and go through vents as much as you can, you can totally do that. That was not my style however, so I rather stunned people by hacking then got close and beat them. To ease this process, I got a health regen augmentation and a suit which regenerated my focus points over time. After getting that, plus the proper skill points, I was just fine with my fists.

Tomorrow's a new world, little bird

The artstyle of the game is amazing, the music is fantastic, and while the characters are not exactly high-res models, it's a pleasure to look at them. I experienced some microstuttering in the scrolling when I was running through the districts without stopping, but it wasn't a huge deal. You can save, but it doesn't really saves your actual progression rather it seem to be saving the status of your game when you entered to the area. So if you want to make sure you don't lose any of your progress when saving, you need to go through a loading screen first by going another district or another part of the level and save the progress after that.

Pros

  • The city is beautifully made. Amazing neon lights, beautiful graffities. It's a living city, it feels real.
  • I liked the music
  • The story is nice too, despite the fact that you can predict it at some point
  • The hacking is fun once you get the upgrades
  • The controls are responsive and works like expected
  • Great voice acting

Cons

  • Some microstuttering while scrolling
  • You don't get recommendations on the quest order so it's easy to start doing something you don't have the ability for
  • While I loved the story, the ending was a little overcomplicated and you have more questions than answers

Get the game if you'd like to play a truly amazing cyberpunk game with nice 2D graphics and story.

Too expensive?

This was a free game for a gaming magazine a few months ago. But not paying for a game doesn't mean playing said game is free. You invest more than 10 hours of your life into this. Which means that if the game is not good enough, even "free" can be expensive. Was it this time? Let's find out.

Wo bist du?

You play the role of a Swiss policeman in the hope that your final act before retirement would be to catch The Raven. The burglar who was responsible for stealing expensive jewelries earlier. So you find yourself in a point and click adventure game walking around and clicking on things. Later you also get control of other characters to be able to see the full picture and get to the end of the riddle.

We are the player

Was it a good idea? Is it a good mechanics to reveal the picture by controlling multiple characters? From the immersion perspective, it isn't. I felt disconnected when I first realized that from now on I get to control someone else. However, from the story perspective, it is a good decision. Seems to be the most logical choice of storytelling once you know the whole picture. Which you don't until the last scene.

Walk Like an Egyptian

So what do we have here?

We have a great music in this game, also we have a nice story and a great storytelling. And while I did not really like how the characters look like, I do like how the environment looks like. Not the most impressive looking thing ever, but still decent and it has its own charm.

Then why did I put a "not recommended" seal to this game, you might ask. Unfortunately because of every other aspect of the game:

  • You make no decisions at all and what you do in one chapter of the game doesn't affect the happenings in the other chapters at all. You can't even play the game continously. Once you finished Chapter 1, the credits roll then you simply click "New Game" and you select Chapter 2 from there.
  • You can save. But don't be fooled. The save feature doesn't really saves your current progress instead it saves from an arbitrary checkpoint. And that checkpoint might had happened to be just a moment before your save or 15 minutes earlier. You never know until you reload your save and you realise you have no idea which point of the game you are at. And you also have to redo a lot of things.
  • I found most riddles dumb. At a point you have a mirror. You want to look around somewhere using that mirror. So you take a radio antenna and stick the mirror to the radio antenna by using a candy you chewed to make it stick. I'm serious. And it holds for like 30 minutes or more. And there are more of these.
  • The movement around is horrible and makes your head ache. You are lucky if the character you control goes where you clicked. Otherwise they love teleporting, moonwalking, ice skating on the floor without having ice or a pair of skates, or just standing in one place and doing full rotations like a radar.
  • The animations are poorly done and the faces look like made of plasticine. If you wish to avoid nightmares, just follow this sanity-saving tip: whenever you think Mrs. Miller is going to smile, close your eyes.

TL;DR

Great story with nice music. But for full price it doesn't worth the pain trying to get the characters go where you want them to go. Because they won't. I'm not entirely sure that even playing it for free worth it. Can't honestly tell you any scenario where you should be buying this game for real-life money. And that's really sad because the Poirot-mood is nicely catched.

Update

Edit: Since an update came out to issue black screen/control issues present on release for some, I have to mention that here. So if you read a review writing about control issues, be aware that most of them are patched already.

Ping

Ever wondered if could you play Pong against one of your friends online? Loved watching Sega Fanboy Mark of Classic Game Room playing Centipede and Missile Command and eagered to do the same? Well, now you can. And it would be a huge mistake not to do that.

Atari Vault brings you hours of fun. In the last two hours I realized how I suck at Breakout, still it's fun to suck at it. A great collection of Atari 2600 and Arcade cabinet games for a fair price.

The devs did a good job here. You can play two-player games online with a friend, however, you should know that there's not a large chance to just find an online game with some random folk to play with, so you have to discuss it in advance.

There are only a dozen of achievements, but when you get them you can feel like you really achieved something. Even if it doesn't seem so by just reading their description. Like "Clear a screen in Super Breakout". Doesn't sound too hard, does it? How hard can it be to clear a screen in a breakout game? Well, it is. So you'll find a good challenge here.

Pong

Pros:

  • A great collection with nice emulation and a lots of fun
  • No FPS-lock (sadly it has to be mentioned)
  • Steam Controller support!!! With different pre-set profiles for the games.
  • Leaderboards and achievements
  • Online play
  • Great menu music
  • It has a neon grid intro. Neon is the future! Or at least it was in the 80s!
  • You have an Atari logo on your screen when you start it. At that very moment you already feel it worth the price!

Be aware:

  • The graphics options are a little bit "barebone", all you have is resolution, bezel art on/off and vector emulation style. However, the latter is a nice touch!
  • The main menu is not too intuitive to navigate
  • Unless hundred thousands of people buys this, be aware that you need someone if you want to play online. I don't think there would be a great chance to just hang out and wait until someone plays Pong with you. It's sad, but multiplayer CoD is somewhat more popular than multiplayer Pong.

Bonus City

Sure, the graphics in the 70s and early 80s weren't that good, and the games looks simpler in today's standard. Still they give you a great challenge and hours of fun. Get it if you can enjoy a game without fancy 3D. Then feel rad when you spend hours playing Super Breakout on your $2000 gaming rig. :)

What do we have here?

Do I recommend this game? I do. Do I think it's a great achievement compared to the first two Walking Dead series? I don't.

Hello, my name is Michonne...

In The Walking Dead: Michonne you control - you guessed - Michonne, a black female protagonist. I pretty much like her, despite her (spoiler incoming) flashbacks of her lost kids. But who am I to judge? I'm not a mother. Nor a father yet (and as things go recently I don't think I will in the near future, but that's my story, not Michonne's).

That's a nice name

So, we have her and our mouse or controller to execute QTEs and make... decisions? Yes, that's my biggest issue with this game: I went through the first episode (at the time of writing that's the only available yet) and I don't really feel I had to make any decisions. We met people and had to choose who am I side with without having any clue who's the good guys here. While I like how the story goes, I feel my choices weightless.

And if you end a chapter and you see that about 80 % of the people have this or that choice, then you can tell that developers gave wrong choices to the players' hand. As one of Life is Strange's developer told in a special edition video, you know you gave good decisions to the players when they hesitate what to do. When there's no obvious "good" and "bad" choice. And here comes Michonne with some 20/80.

Norma's nice too...

From a technical viewpoint you got the same thing for the xth time. Maybe the graphics look somewhat nicer than earlier, and we have large floating QTE-symbols this time, the navigation in the menu is still a pain.

Pros:
  • You can adjust the subtitle size to your liking (non-native-English TV people will like that)
  • I like the story
  • I like the theme songs (both at the opening and ending theme)
  • I like the protagonist

Cons:
  • You can't turn off vsync
  • Navigating in the menu is slow as a snail. You want to try out all 3 subtitle sizes? Good luck as it takes looooong seconds to get back to the menu, open the.. brr..
  • It asked me to register a Telltale account as it comes with some "perks". I did. Now it asks me every time I start the game if I want to enable cloud saves. It also told me I can learn about the "perks" on a URL you can't click on but I decided to just type it in to the browser because I wanted to see the advantages I have now. You can guess nothing's there but your profile. Maybe the only good thing is that you can see a few more choices on the webpage[www.telltalegames.com] than the episode end screen if you are logged in to your account. Decisions like these:
  • You and 76.2% of players.. oh my god. Are you serious? You and 99.7% of players stabbed him with a screwdriver. What the heck, Telltale!? If 99.7 % of your players stab someone with a screwdriver, that means you just hid the other-thing-which-is-not-a-screwdriver so noone could find it or your percentage counter just bugged out. We want real choices!
  • What's up with these Steam Achievement "Artworks"? "1", "2"? Don't be so lazy. Hire someone to do it properly.

Is it?

Summary: Nice story with a nice protagonist. Lazy execution. The reason I recommend it: Despite its obvious flaws, I enjoyed my 2 hours with the first episode.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons

Brothers is a not-too-long story where you control two characters simultaneously with one controller. I picked it up at the Steam Winter Sale on a 90 % discount. I'll be honest: I would not have bought the game for full price. The reason is that I already had my premade opinion based on other reviews and looked like this:

"Okay, it's a nice-looking game, but it puts the emotions directly in your face instead of letting them build up inside you on their own."

I am sorry to admit: I was right.

Great things about to happen

Loved the visuals and I'm in love with the soundtrack! The music you hear in the trailer featured on the Steam Store Page is one of my favorites for sure!

You will encounter puzzles. Not too hard puzzles, won't really make your brain melt, but that's not the point. The game does not want to stop you, it wants to guide you through a story. It wants you to live the story as your own. By the end of the game, you really look at the two brothers as heroes.

But oh well...

But yes, this supposed to be a critical review where I should point out that the game is not perfect. During the playthrough I managed to fell through platforms, been witnessing the thing I was carrying in my hands go under the terrain. Managed to mount a bird in a way where one brother was sitting in the air.

Unfortunately lot of the puzzles felt like their only purpose in the existence is to provide a puzzle. When a player encounters a puzzle he or she should feel that "okay, I shall get through here and I need to figure out how" instead of "why on earth did they put here this lever since there's no point having it here at all except that they want me to pull it". And that's not right.

TL;DR

Get the game. Great soundtrack, great art design. However, If you know yourself as someone who don't like big "cry here" or "feel sorrow here" signs around your journey, wait for a sale.

Life is Strange is an episodic adventure game where you control Max, an art school student, who accidentaly realizes she has some control over time.

Definetely recommended to everyone who loves Telltale's Walking Dead series. It does things in a similar fashion (except that you don't have to make timed decisions) but I liked the art style more in this game. The visuals are stunning, the music is great and it has a story you can really live through in yourself.

Compared to The Walking Dead series, here you really feel your decisions matter, and not just at the end.

However, I can't let one flaw unmentioned: in Episode 5, you have some sort of stealth section which you can fail pretty easily. This shouldn't be a problem since we can rewind time whenever we want. The real issue is that sometimes rewinding fails due to a bug so the character or characters around you doesn't move during rewind thus as soon as you release the "rewind" button, you fail your task (e.g. being hidden) again since your environment had not changed at all. You can repeat this up to the point where you cannot rewind anymore. At that stage Max - your heroine - won't move at all and will mumbling that she should rewind immediately, but you can't because the game does not allow that. And since there are no checkpoints during this stage you have to start all over again.

I could forgive this issue, but since this section relies on the main extra feature of the game (rewinding time) and the main extra feature is the one which sometimes bugs out, it's not acceptable because it breaks the immersion which the game had built up to that point so wonderfully.

Final werdict: Absolutely Recommended, and a black mark for the rewind bug.
