A Fantastical Journey of Innovation and Classic RPG Charm

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a refreshing entry into the fantasy RPG genre that successfully blends traditional elements with innovative gameplay mechanics, offering an experience that both veterans and newcomers will appreciate. Here's a breakdown of my thoughts on the game:

Story and Setting
The story of Metaphor: ReFantazio is both familiar and fresh, placing players in a beautifully crafted world teetering on the edge of chaos. While the premise of a hero rising to save the world from impending doom is standard RPG fare, the game elevates the experience with intricate world-building and a cast of compelling characters. Each character has a unique backstory that unfolds as you progress, offering depth and emotional resonance. The dialogue is sharp, often witty, and adds to the immersion, though some pacing issues in the narrative might leave players feeling like particular plot points are either rushed or stretched.

The world itself is stunningly realized. Every location feels alive and distinct, from lush forests to vast, otherworldly cities. The art style is reminiscent of the Persona series, a popular RPG franchise known for its stylish visuals and compelling narratives. This similarity isn't surprising given that some of the team behind Metaphor: ReFantazio also worked on the Persona series. The game's bold use of color, along with its clean, anime-inspired character designs, will instantly feel familiar to Persona fans. However, the world in Metaphor feels more expansive and otherworldly, with a strong emphasis on fantasy settings that set it apart visually. Despite the world's beauty, exploration can sometimes feel a bit confined, with specific areas feeling more like corridors than open environments.

Gameplay Mechanics
At its core, Metaphor: ReFantazio employs a turn-based combat system with a twist. The combat feels dynamic, thanks to a layered strategy system that rewards planning and tactical execution. The game introduces a unique 'emotion-based' battle mechanic, where your party's emotional state affects their combat performance. For instance, a character feeling 'courageous' might deal more damage, while a 'fearful' character might be more prone to missing their attacks. This feature forces you to think beyond the typical attack, defend, or heal options, adding a refreshing strategic layer to the experience.

However, some tutorials explaining these mechanics feel overwhelming, especially for players unfamiliar with more complex systems. But once you grasp the rhythm of combat, it becomes a rewarding challenge rather than a daunting task.

The progression system is robust, with plenty of options for character development. Players can customize their party members' abilities and play styles through 'skill trees ', which allow them to unlock and upgrade unique abilities. Additionally, 'gear upgrades' provide a way to enhance your party's stats and abilities. This level of customization makes each battle feel personalized. That said, grinding for experience or rare items can sometimes feel tedious, especially in the mid-to-late stages of the game.

Sound and Music
One of the game's standout features is its soundtrack. The music perfectly complements the atmosphere of each setting and battle, enhancing the emotional weight of critical moments. The soundtrack never misses a beat, from haunting melodies in desolate landscapes to epic orchestral pieces in high-stakes battles.

Regarding voice acting, the Japanese cast delivers a notably more robust performance than the English one. The Japanese voice actors bring a more profound sense of emotion and nuance to their roles, making key moments feel more impactful. While the English voice acting is okay, it occasionally feels flat or forced, especially during emotionally charged scenes. If you're a fan of Japanese RPGs, I recommend playing with the original Japanese voice track and English subtitles for a more authentic and immersive experience.

Graphics and Performance
Visually, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a feast for the eyes. Fans of the Persona series will instantly recognize the influence of the graphics, especially in the character designs and the stylish UI. The game employs bold, vibrant colors and smooth, cel-shaded animation, creating a world that feels alive and surreal, much like the dreamlike environments of Persona 5. The fantasy elements, however, bring a fresh aesthetic to the table, making the game feel like a spiritual successor to Persona with a distinct fantasy twist.

The environments are detailed and diverse, offering everything from magical forests to ethereal cities. The performance is generally smooth on higher-end systems, but lower-end setups might experience some frame drops or texture pop-ins, particularly in more significant battles. The occasional bug—like characters getting stuck on objects—doesn't detract much from the overall experience, though it can be slightly frustrating.

Final Thoughts
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a well-crafted fantasy RPG that combines both nostalgic and innovative elements, offering an engaging experience for fans of the genre. The graphical style, reminiscent of the Persona series, brings a unique charm that fans of those games will love. While it may not reinvent the wheel, its thoughtful story, unique battle mechanics, and breathtaking world make it worthwhile. Its strengths are its stunning visuals, complex combat system, and stellar Japanese voice acting. On the downside, some pacing issues, repetitive grinding, and an underwhelming English voice cast hold it back slightly from perfection.

If you're a fan of classic RPGs with a modern flair or loved the Persona series, Metaphor: ReFantazio is definitely worth picking up.

Sony is like an Elden Ring boss. This is their first phase of transformation! For now, we have won the fight! Good job, everyone, for not bending your knee to their corporate greed!

Initially, I was apprehensive about buying the game with floods of comments on the stutter issue due to the Unreal Engine 3 points. The fixes included by people temporarily fixed the case, with the patch coming out later at night. It has been fixed, I would say, 99% of the stutter problem, but more patches would smooth out the problem. With its atmospheric music and storyline, the game itself feels like how the 3rd iteration of Dead Space would have been if it weren’t for EA’s intervention. The ending feels like there will be another iteration of the game, but I hope they learn their lesson on optimizing the game further before release.

Is very refreshing to see how the gun is so realistic but at the same time the story falls flat and the beginning of the game there is explanation on why is the character there to begin with. The running mechanic is just asinine and not only that hacking mechanic is just counter intuitive as hell. The movement is janky and lacks any refinement. Is not exactly very beginner friendly either they just thrust you into the game hoping you have played the first one.

Very much the samething as the Cities XL just new buildings that is all. I sugguest getting it half off if you want to try it and the engine plus UI is really dated like pre 2005 graphics. Same bugginess and everything pretty so I am suggesting a no to this game. There is nothing innovative about it and it should be named Cities XL expantion dlc instead.

This game is seriously addicting not only is the game play similar to Endless Space but the graphic is rich and the technology tree is just astounding. This game is way too refined to call it an Alpha it feels more like an early Beta than anything else. They put alot of effort into this game and if they keep it up along with a jutifiable game cost. what is not to like?
