This was my first souls game, and I hated it at first. I refunded it the first time I played it, but gave it another go because one of my good friends loves this game. I felt kind of awful for my first 10-20 hours, but after killing the crucible night in the evergaol on stormhill, it clicked, and I really found the magic in this game. I spent like 4 collective hours on that evergaol getting my ass beat by that crucible knight and it felt impossible. Despite that, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ did it, and I felt like I did something I wasn't supposed to do, and that's really where my amazement with this game came in.

Most games have an intended solution for you to follow. While this game was definitely extensively playtested, each enemy doesn't give you attack windows because you need a way to win, they do it because their attack left the vulnerable. Between poise and stamina and each attack that you and the enemy make yourselves vulnerable in, its like a steady dance to the death and I think it's beautiful. This is one of my favorite games of all time.

I heard from my friends that the lore/story was kind of just Game of Thrones but with a little more sex, but I actually disagree and felt somewhat captivated by it. Learning about the relationships between demigods through vague phrases and the environment felt really compelling, like in miquella's haligtree, where you see statues of him being raised by queen marika. I like that the story wasn't handed to you on a platter and that, much like the gameplay, you had to earn it, you had to pay attention and think, "what the hell is that guy saying?" One of my favorite cases of this was trying to understand what force was guiding us throughout the game. You see it early on as the yellow wisps flowing from a site of grace, that shows up on your map generally pointing you in a direction to progress. At the end of the game, Godfrey is that same sort of directional grace, pointed at YOU which I thought was such a cool detail, especially since I had been looking for indications of what it meant. So much in this game isn't just gameplay and has greater implications. Last thing about setting and story, I'm such a sucker for outer gods and I love their influences on the lands between.

Seeing messages from other players was fantastic and it always felt good to get appraisals from other players going through the same thing as you. I also really like the messaging format in old-english and the limited options, it made for really creative messages. One of my favorites early game was basically someone saying they got home from work and was smoking weed while playing Elden Ring, I forget exactly how they phrased it was so funny.

Briefly I want to mention, anything else not criticized in this review, consider it perfect. The music, the landscape, the weapons, the enemies, I loved it all. One more minor good thing, merchants having notes "imparting knowledge in brief." These notes were great and really helpful, I wish there were more of these and that I knew they existed sooner.

Now for the criticisms. Large bosses, I just wish the camera zoomed out a little so I could more easily see the bosses attack. 60 frames lock was really annoying, I understand its tied to the engine but as a consumer, I don't want to be locked at 60. The introductions for new players, while I understand it was probably the best for any souls game, was pretty poor. I had to watch youtube videos to understand crucial elements like poise and fall damage. I wish these were better taught in Limgrave. Last thing I wanna complain about, the UI. Its robust and functional but it could be much better with a lot less redundancy in button presses.

I'm really looking forward to SotE, and I intend to play new game plus before that even comes out.
If any from soft devs read this, you got a new fanboy and please remake bloodborne for PC, even if its locked at 30 frames...please <3

Its great, its more resident evil 4 and it delightfully expands on Ada's character. There was only one or two moments where I was like "how did she know that" namely when she told Leon where Ashley was being held the second time, but besides that this DLC fits absolutely perfectly into the timeline. While not the same length as a 2nd Scenario campaign from say RE:2 Remake, it was fairly close. Definitely recommend and I want more Ada and Leon interactions. That said, I also kinda wanna know how Leon, Claire, and Sheryl seemingly split up after RE:2

This is less an issue with the DLC and more with the original game, but I am a fan of the more horror centric Resident Evil games, and I feel that these games hit the perfect level of tension when you're both struggling to stay alive, struggling to have enough ammo, and struggling to not puss out of the game. I wanna highlight the factory area, specifically with the big bois with wyrms in their tummies that you can see with thermals: those guys lurking and making horrible noises when the lights go out is fantastic.

Fun experience! Doesn't overstay its welcome, achievements are a nice little bonus. Music is absolutely phenomenal, especially the rising tension while Charles approaches. The stealth was rather frustrating but I can gladly look past that. The final fight and ending scene also went hard as hell.

This game is so good, head to toe is all good design choices. The only complaint I have is that during one and only one scene, in Seamus's House , having an absurdly high frame rate caused me to clip through walls and stopped progression, but turning on a cap was an easy fix.

The game's themes strike an excellent balance between safe and friendly enough to not feel like you're watching a cat suffer. That being said, the themes are still intense but not overly-stated, the game elegantly covering themes including but not limited to class division, authoritarianism, loss & acceptance, sacrifice for a cause, brutality of prisons & over-enforcement, and questioning the fluid nature of being.

This is gonna go down as one of my favorite games of all time, and I intend to show it to my kids one day.

This game is phenomenal. The graphical fidelity, facial animations, sound design, game-play, everything about this game is fantastic. My first play through took 16 hours and not a second of it was spent bored. I fully intend to play new game plus and go for challenges, and to return for any future DLC for this game.

Update: Came back for the DLC. It's awesome, still love this game.

May 13, 2021:
This is one of the best games I've ever played. Be open to exploring and adventuring, and just kinda figure things out my dude. The environmental cues in this game are top notch and really just let you explore. I implore you, even if you're the impatient type, to give this game a shot, or at least watch a bit of it to see if you'd be into it. It really is a treat.

The game's music, art direction, physics, controls, story, and pretty much everything else are all top notch, and come together to be immensely more than the sum of its parts.

Aug 20, 2024:
Revisited this game to go for 100% achievements. It's still such a beautiful work of art.

I will say a couple of the achievements in the DLC are a bit confusing or bugged, but there are very nice guides by the community.

That said, there's so many wonderful things about this game. It's a bridge between immersive sim, puzzle, and exploration genres. It tells of a hopeful optimism alongside crushing existentialism. Everything in the game screams intent of design, and everything feels intentional. Outer Wilds is a game like no other, and I hope it is looked on for inspiration for many years to come.

I'd like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to everyone who worked on or around this game, because it really is beautiful.

Great game. Settings were extremely various between the "chapters" of the game, offering wholly different experiences, almost feeling like switching machines in an arcade, but in a good way. I'm easily startled when in a dark room and I certainly had my fair share of scares and dread this game, though I'm proud to report I did not, in fact, soil my pantaloons. Haven't played the post-game content yet but the fact that it exists is appreciated.
