Possibly my favorite of the Balatro-inspired roguelikes I've played. It's got a gorgeous art style, and lends itself to a wide variety of build types. Getting an option of which boss to face also prevents you from getting hard-countered.

I also like word games quite a lot, but let's be honest, that's really just a tiny part of what's going on here.

It's still very early access as I write this, but I'm enamored by Effulgence RPG already. The artwork and music alone is enough to make it more than worth checking out, and you're constantly making interesting decisions in and out of combat. Extremely addictive; I was thinking about this game frequently after checking out the demo, and have had a great time with the Early Access release so far.

It's still quite short in the current EA version, but honestly, I've spent a lot more for games that have offered a lot less, so I fully recommend this one, even in the early state.

An enjoyable incremental game with a thin, but entertaining optimization layer on top of it. It's mostly about making numbers bigger by spending your numbers, but you do have to take some time to organize and connect nodes, determine what's worth your incoming resources and what's not.

The clean, animated flowchart style is pleasing to watch and it's a great timekiller. As far as I'm aware, there's not a way to get an ending as of the time of this review, but I was able to get 100% of the achievements in about 33 hours without paying for any of the DLC boosts, playing fairly (but not entirely) actively. Definitely worth picking up if you like the vibes and are looking for an idle game. Throw the developer some support with a DLC boost or two if you can, but you can do absolutely everything without them - this game isn't gunning for your wallet.

It's Blobun! But retro! And the puzzles are different!

Blobun is still a great, approachable and cute puzzle game, and Blobun Mini keeps all of the positives of its bigger sibling, shrunk down to the Pico 8 format and with new puzzles. The full version of Blobun is still the definitive experience (and I'd recommend over Blobun Mini), but this release makes for a great low-commitment puzzler.

With a completely separate set of puzzles, there's also no reason to not just play both versions of Blobun to really get your fill of sliming tiles.

I wonder what the design meetings are like at Creative Business Unit III these days.

"No, see, it's okay if the story and gameplay is boring and insufferable, because the player character looks annoyed when they get the quests!"

Blobun is a relatively chill puzzle game with a single, easy to understand objective. Complexity increases over time with the introduction of new elements and deceptively tricky puzzle shapes. It never quite gets to the point that it will mire seasoned puzzle game veterans for too long, but it's not shy to offer some real head-scratcher puzzles, particularly in the optional puzzles and later into the game.

Blobun is also colorblind-friendly, which can be a concern in this genre - colored elements have symbols or pips that indicate matching elements.

The presentation is delightful, it's a great fit for the Steam deck, and it's wrapped in a charming LGBTQ+ story.

If you're looking for an idle-ish game to waste away a couple of afternoons, (the) Gnorp Apologue is a pretty good choice. It's full of charm and you get to make some interesting choices to get the sort of synergies you need to get through the game, and it is friendly to being as active or passive as you like.

Just shy of 10 hours to 100% fairly actively.

Honestly just one of those games that ticks every box. Great style, great gameplay, great writing.

Reminds me of the game Fights in Tight Spaces, along with the usual Into the Breach and X-Com comparisons everyone else is making, but I feel it's a little unfair and reductive to only refer to it as "sort of like these other games." Extremely compelling tactical gameplay and surprisingly compelling characters given the ostensibly goofy premise.

Tickles the brain in all the right ways, and on top of that, it's the most friendly-designed game I've ever played. Never a moment did I wonder what something did or what choices were permanent or anything. We need more games with the level of attention to the player experience that this one has.
