Best to go in blind and just enjoy the perfectly paced experience this dev team has laid out for players.

The atmosphere is beautiful, the assets are actually modeled in real life before being photographed and inserted into the game to give it a unique feel, the music is absolutely astounding, I could go on and on about it's presentation.

Thankfully, from a gameplay perspective - The Swapper is mechanically genius and doesn't throw in an overabundance of new tech/tools/whatever to break your brain. You are given a device that can make copies of yourself and rail-gun your consciousness into said new copy. This is used to solve various puzzles and open up further areas of the ship you make your way through towards completion.

No words from me on the plot of this game, as I said - best to go in blind - but I do believe the story itself is actually quite engaging and delivered with some great voice acting.

The less you know about this game, the more it will captivate you. It's length is perfect, never overstaying it's welcome, and the difficulty is tough but rewarding.

Recommended always.

Welcome to 'Whose Crime Is It Anyways?', the game where everything is made up and the choices don't matter.

All jokes aside, this is a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and I encourage anyone who is interested in playing it to go in as blindly as possible. Just have tempered expectations to your autonomy and enjoy the varied minigames that tell a pretty compelling story (some blunders in the last half of the game aside).

Presentation is fantastic. Visuals are great, the soundtrack is quite nice and the way that the game shifts it's interactivity to suit the events in the game is always pretty fresh. The only downside is the voice acting, which is HQ in production - but performance wise, I got Resident Evil vibes pretty hard. 99% of the people in Paris sound like Americans reading a stage play where the director only told them to attempt sounding French when saying names and places. It's extremely half assed sometimes, but it didn't detract from the overall experience for me.

8/10 - I killed a ton of people.

Frustratingly hard, but enjoyable for the most part.
AI is a bummer, but RE fans already know what to expect when it comes to AI teammates.
Environments are great, music is fantastic, monsters could've been a bit less ridiculous.
Worth a run.

Yeah, nah.

The atmosphere is wonderful, addictive and creepy. It's definitely not a setting you are comfortable being in, which makes the tension of getting from safe point to another safe point (that's hopefully in the direction you're trying to search in) extremely palpable. There's a lot of under-the-surface mythos being built here with the device of the eerie Dyatlov Pass Incident as a way to delve into a deeper underworld involving Soviet science experiments and Gods of Old.

It's a big shame that this game is about as fun as watching paint dry. The compass/map setup appears to have been built for masochists, by masochists. Hardcore exploration junkies will get a kick out of it for the first hour and then realize that the map itself is extremely unreliable. I get not wanting to hold the gamer's hand throughout their "tense" experience, but this is "Mom leaves child at mall intentionally" levels of neglect from the dev's in regards to making their exploration system fulfilling.

I kept thinking to myself, "These guys definitely tried to be writers before game developers" multiple times during my run. The ultimate irony in this is that Kholat's story isn't actually very good. Like, at all. It teases you with intriguing moments, absolutely, but the ending is such a slap in the face to all of the atmosphere that had been building up that I sat there gawking at the monitor realizing I had just spent the past nearly six hours playing a straight-to-DVD horror film. A walking simulator of a straight-to-DVD horror film.

TL;DR -
Game isn't good.
Game gaslights you with it's intense atmosphere into wondering if you're the reason why you're not enjoying it.
Game's mechanics are built to magnetically repel fun.
Game's story teabags you with one of the worst payoffs ever.
Sean Bean.

Neutral Recommendation.

Bunker Punks is an addictive and charming FPS rogue-lite that has a fun atmosphere and an appreciated base building mechanic that's (thankfully) simple and allows a breath of fresh air after you make it through each of the levels on a small, connected map.

The gist of the game is you're part of a band of revolutionaries waging urban guerilla warfare against an evil corporation that has made humanity collectively have a bad day for what seems like a long time. There are little tidbits of lore that pop up in between levels in a timeline format showing the decay of the world. You pick from a rotating list of "punks" each with their own stats/specialties.

The gameplay is pure run and gun and brings to mind games like DOOM and Wolfenstein, which seem like obvious influences considering the pixel art style the game chooses to implement. The formula: Make your way from A-B, with B being an elevator at the end to take you up to the next floor of the corporate building you're raiding.

Various monsters will be ready to eviscerate you - ranging from small, janky drones that shock you to gigantic metal spiders with rocket launchers strapped to their backs. There are also objects in the game to destroy that contain weapons, health pickups, and - most importantly - Credits and Tech, which are used during both the post-death and post-level phases.

Outside of the raids, you return to your hideout upon completion of a level. This is where you have the opportunity to spend Credit on various upgrades, heal your punks, and buy weapons/armor from a trader (whom you can also sell weapons/armor you store into your upgradable backpack during the level phase).

The base building is very simple, which is a breath of fresh air. It's a device that is meant to give you a breather after making your way through the increasingly difficult levels and formulate a strategy on what stats you'd like to upgrade (i.e. health given back after each floor, pistol damage, etc.)

Permadeath is a mechanic in Bunker Punks, and how it works is every time your punk(s) die, you are able to spend the Tech you have accrued on permanent upgrades for the game (of which there are 50). This can manifest in such ways like new guns to acquire, adding additional punks to your roster, armor sets, etc. Basically it's what gives the game some replayability.

To be honest, I spent 3 hours straight playing this game and beat it. It is definitely one of those games where you will get addicted to it and see it through, but unfortunately I'm not all that sold on replaying it myself. Sure, I had only died twice and had a surplus of Tech to spend after I beat the game - so I know I can go back and experience some things - but I guess it's kind of like Taco Bell: It sounds like a great idea to get, while it's happening it's actually pretty good, but after you're done and reflect, you realize that you're actually done with it.

Gameplay: 7/10
Graphics: 7/10
Music: 6/10
Replayability: 4/10

Buy it on sale, preferably. I recommend it, but with the stipulation that it's a one-and-done type of deal.

Short and sweet.

Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You is an interactive dystopian mystery clicker with one of the most obvious titles on this planet. Seriously, tell me you don't have an inkling of what this game is about just by reading it. No?
Well - Orwell touches on government surveillance, privacy in the age of send/receive, newsfeeds and - on the philosophical level - shockingly personal themes such as morality, autonomy and group culture. It also teeters on the sociological side of things with themes of the looking-glass self, or how we present ourselves to the world/others. Let's talk about the narrative. I'll try not to spoil too much.

------------------------------------

You are, well, yourself. You live in a non-disclosed location as an investigator who has just been contracted to work on a secret government project by The Nation; A country that is, simply put, not doing so great from the leadership aspect. The Nation is undergoing political turmoil, both inner and outer, and is seeing a concerning increase in violence, extremism and terrorist attacks. This has led the country to establish increasingly dystopian methods of surveillance.

The beginning scene sets the tone with you looking through multiple sets of cameras on an otherwise normal day in a city square. The cameras scan the citizens, seemingly referencing police files to determine if they're a threat. So far, so good! A blue haired girl quietly walks past and the camera begins to buzz, showing that - !!! - she has had an encounter with the law in the past. We tensely follow her as she gets on a bus and it drives away. Hm. Well, surely that's not THAT out of the ordinary, right? We all know someone who has a blot on their record. Surely, we shouldn't judge unless they've done something terrible? I'll reserve my judgement.

And then a statue a short distance away is engulfed in dust, shrapnel and the sounds of an otherwise normal day being eviscerated as a bomb explodes. Well, damn.

This is where you come in, Investigator. You have been hired to test the efficacy of the brand new "Orwell" project. Orwell is a hot-off-the-assembly-line database tool that allows you to search nearly anything there is to know about a person. It creates links between people for referencing and logs any interesting findings you catch - referred to as 'datachunks' within each person's "file". Your job is to prevent any other terrorist attacks from occurring as well as finding out who could've been behind such a horrible event.

-------------------------------------

The success of Orwell is predicated on it's atmosphere - and it is indeed the game's biggest asset. However...

If I can be quite honest - the writing itself isn't anything revolutionary here when it comes to it's subject matter. Some of the dialogue is great, engrossing even. Some of it is extraordinarily cringey, for lack of a better word. A certain aforementioned blue-haired character comes to mind, especially near the end game. Some laughably unbelievable behavior occurs that can really mess with your vibe once you understand exactly how the plot is shaping itself.

Writing quibbles aside, immersion is ultimately what reigns supreme here. The developers have created such an oppressively paranoid atmosphere with the simple interface and nerve-wracking audio cues that it's incredibly easy to be charmed and overlook it's relatively short length. This is a game that benefits from not overstepping it's own ambition.

I've seen a few other reviews being slightly critical of the fact that more characters weren't involved in the overall game - but I think that this actually works in Orwell's favor. The gameplay is the *absolute* definition of repetitive. You shift between tabs, you drag and you drop. That's it. If the gameplay wasn't so story centric and was more sim-based (with more options within the Orwell interface), I would agree with those criticisms and want to be Big Brother until the end of time. However, this is an actual story game. Consider this to be a dystopian choose your own adventure.

To end this ramble, let's talk length and price. I spent 3.4 hours on this game and completed it. It's currently $9.99 on Steam. I myself, being transparent, did not pay $9.99 for this. I received it in a bundle along with it's sequel. So you ultimately will have to make your own call here - but I will say that YES - Orwell is indeed worth $10 just for the first playthrough alone.

Not very many games touch upon these themes, and I do consider these to be important themes considering the time/political climate we live in right now. Regardless of how successful the game is at making a statement on these themes, I appreciate the effort. And a lot of effort has gone into this game.

I very much recommend you give it the chance, it may very well cause you to look over both digital shoulders.
