The entire game is structured off of a communist item stratification system. The lower your position in the race, the more powerful items you’re rewarded with. The lightning bolt power-up, which can only be obtained by those in 7th and 8th place (which is the lowest possible rank) shrinks and impedes the movement of every racer on the board for a short period of time, enabling the person in last to jet forward a few places. As if Mario Kart 64’s hated lightning bolt power-up wasn’t enough to make Marx smile amidst a sound sleep in his grave, later versions of Mario Kart even amplified the damage done to the rightful leaders by shortening the penalty time for players in lower places and increasing it for players in first and second places.
