I'm usually in two minds about reviewing games but Nordic Ashes has done so much to earn my positive review that I can't put it off any longer. You already know what this is and there's lots of games in the genre now so the competition is stiffer than ever. With that in mind, I can still unreservedly recommend that you buy this game.

During development and post-1.0, the developers have been unrelenting with updates, roadmaps, seasonal content, new characters/unlocks, achievements, etc. Almost everything seems to have been carefully considered to ensure that the maps, enemies and playable characters are all varied and interesting to play - nothing feels like filler. There's plenty of meta progression to grind as well as different modes and costume unlockables. There's just so much to do here, all in a fully polished package and at a steal of a price.

There's a lot of competition in the genre now and so this game has gone from looking promising to being very middle of the road and unspectacular. Unfortunately, what's more is that it is lacking polish. For example: considering we're past 1.0 now there shouldn't still be placeholder text presented to the user, it's unforgivable and doesn't seem to be awaiting an upcoming patch. The game isn't very user-friendly regarding its systems/progression and the whole presentation of the UI and transitions feel like they need another pass.

However, there's a good amount of content for the price so this is yet another case of needing a neutral review option. If you can get past the game's shortcomings then you can still have a good time with it, especially if you don't already own some of the better games in the genre.

I agree with a lot of the other reviews.

The developer seems to keep trying to take this series in a different direction but it never works. Rather than repeating all the finer details which have already been said, I'll stick to the major problem with this game: it is simply too hectic, all the time, right from the very beginning. Yes, we all enjoy the chaos of rush hour in the previous games, but when each level is just a series of consecutive rush hours, you've lost the magic. There's no ebb and flow, no down time.

I don't think the developer understands what made the first game so successful. This is proven by how each subsequent game gradually removes more and more of what made it so fun and addictive. There is no bigger evidence of this than the newest game (Cook Serve Forever) which is unrecognisable as a Cook Serve game and shouldn't even bear its name.

You almost need to know what this game really is before approaching it in order to not dismiss it at face value.

This is basically a higher production value, deeper and more polished version of Killing Floor 1, which is everything I wanted it to be (and yet more than I expected). On its face, a wave-based co-op horde mode but packed with nuance, charm and interesting mechanics. You need to dig deep enough to find this stuff before really being able to judge it, because it could easily be overlooked.

I have at least as much play time on the PS4 version and wish I had enough free time to play more regularly on both platforms.

One of my favourite games of all time.

It was a compelling and well-supported product during Early Access but around the time of proper launch there were big bugs which took far too long to fix, particularly on Vita and PS4 (patches failing Sony's certification numerous times was a running joke on the subreddit). It seemed like as soon as the game left Early Access the developers vanished and were done with it, completely in contrast to during development. Post-release support has been terrible.

Gameplay is fun on the face of it but soon wears thin due to a lack of depth and variation in the level design. Controller support has never worked for me. It is worth noting that the game is limited to a framerate of 30fps.

I'd personally not recommend buying the game primarily because of how Early Access supporters have been treated but irrespective of that, the game itself really does pale in comparison to others in this genre. Diehard fans of the game can probably look past the former but it left a bitter taste in my mouth which wasn't outweighed by the gameplay. I'd rather support developers with a more aligned moral compass.

It is difficult to be critical of something which is free but I feel like after sinking 8 hours into this, I need to at least share my opinion. I don't feel like this review contains spoilers but if you're extremely sensitive about that sort of thing, you might want to stop reading this now.

The story meanders very slowly for about the first third and eventually gets more interesting and picks up the pace for the middle third. The final third gave the impression that things were wrapping up but all I got was a cliché ending and no questions were answered. After the ending I got, I reloaded the last autosave to make a different choice and get a different ending but both were equally unsatisfactory. I wish I had known that this was one of those stories that keeps you wondering at the end, rather than explicitly explaining everything.

On a slightly separate frustrating issue, it felt like the story involved building quite a few different relationships, and some of those might veer in certain directions as a result of choices you make along the way. However, the hinted intentions never became anything and I was left wondering why the choices I made seemingly had no effect on my relationship with particular people.

Although my review is critical and sounds fairly negative, I would still recommend giving this a playthrough because the story was *just* compelling enough to keep my attention to the end and it cost me nothing to experience.

edit: I forgot to mention that some parts of the game were uncharacteristically salacious and didn't feel in keeping with the theme or story. I wasn't offended by it but it just felt out of place and quite ridiculous.

Pretty fun with enough of a challenge on hard difficulty. Much higher production value than the prequel with plenty of replayability for completionists. The plinky plonky rhythmic sounds are completely overrated by others. Value for money is reasonable but I'd recommend picking it up when it is on sale.
