TL;DR
Do I love this game? Yes.
Is this game grindy? Yes.
In a good way? NO.
Can I recommend it to anyone? No.
Does the dev and publisher care? No.
Is there a better alternative? Sadly, not yet.

The answer to the second and third questions are because of the same reason. Frontier doesn't care about its players. It actually feels like Frontier HATES its players. The release of Odyssey was bad, but even leading up to its release Frontier was already showing its true form. Unlike Hello Games who, after a disastrous launch, clawed their way back and proved they cared about the players. No Man's Sky still sucks, but at least they're trying. Frontier on the other hand has continued to pursue a grindy letdown of a game. Any improvements to this game aren't what the fans ask for and when asked about features promised and not delivered, Frontier gets defensive.

I still play in Horizons and I love it. I haven't purchased Odyssey, because I've been cautioned about Odyssey. I wanted to work towards buying a Fleet Carrier, but have been cautioned against that, as well. I want to believe that there is hope for this game getting better, but again I've been cautioned that it is going to stagnate. The game feels like a combination of unfinished gameplay features, rather than a holistic experience. So I am cautioning you that underneath the pretty makeup that this game has, there is abandoneware.

My recommendation is to watch youtube videos by TheYamiks or Drew Wagar if you want the opinion of bigger fans than me, but do not listen to a tone-deaf group like Frontier's marketing to get an idea of what this game is like. It's doubtful upper admin or marketing at Frontier have even played the game. Maybe there isn't a better alternative right now (X4, No Man's Sky, Star Citizen, etc. all have their own issues), but just because it's better than nothing doesn't mean it's good, worth your money, or worth your time. Consider your time most of all. Frontier can fix the grind - but they don't listen and don't care.
