This game, to me, is what FPS as a genre should have become. Instead of spitting in the face of years of great game design by "modernizing" the experience, what you get is a first-person-shooter than follows the same design and gameplay principles as the shooters of old, while still taking advantage of newer hardware. It includes modern features like ADS for certain weapons and sprint, without making the game reliant on those features. A true modern-oldschool shooter that doesn't go overboard with its blood and guts *cough*Doom 2016*cough*. If you're sick of the same-old same-old that modern FPS has been pumping out, give this one a try.

As for Serious Sam fans, if you enjoyed the first and second encounter, you'll enjoy this one. The gameplay is nearly identical for the old games, save for a few new features and more modern-looking guns. This IS a prequel after all, so of course sam would be using a lot of the same guns that his fellow soldiers use. Don't worry though, the minigun and double barrel are still here.

As much as I love this game, there are cons, of course. Some of the levels in the later parts of the game feature long treks through cramped underground corridors, which are honestly a bit boring. Also, just like the old games, there are parts where the devs just go completely overboard with enemy spam. Now, maybe I just suck, but these parts feel virtually impossible to beat without answering the enemy spam in kind with your quicksaves (I was playing on NORMAL difficulty, too.)

Overall, a solid 8/10. Not a masterpiece, but certainly far better than alot the trash coming out these days, and a must-have if you're a fan of oldschool-FPS.
