A lovely atmospheric underwater detective/survival experience. It offers a new more dimensional experience. It's shorter - it's DLC not a sequel. I'd love another.

On many levels I think this is more to my liking than the original, but also cannot exist without it. They're fundamentally quite different, heavily de-emphasizing running from spookums and focusing more on exploration.

This DLC was a creative risk, because it's not just "more of the first thing". It's a different thing with a different reason to exist. Highly recommended.

A real maturation in both technical fidelity and level design. Yes, it's the same places, but that's kind of the idea. It's a place that feels the same, but isn't.

Complete game as is. Any updates are welcome (and look forward to having another excuse to explore), but I wouldn't say you need to wait. If you enjoy the free one, and want to visit again, this is awesome.

This game is incredible and I would pay for new levels forever.

Freelancer is one of the best free updates to any game. It turns the game design 45 degrees and asks you to solve a new puzzle while building on your existing knowledge of the levels.

The story is rad and the way it's told is awesome.

After hundreds of hours, I still learn things while playing. The level design is rich and rewards patience and observation. The game can be easy and brutally hard, depending on what you want.

If you like the core puzzle of this game, there's not really a greater value for money. If it seems expensive, it is not; you get so much! This game rewards specific play, like any game, but if this game does it for you... hoo-buddy, you are in for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ treat.[/b]

If this was the only game in my Steam library, I wouldn't be mad about it.

I liked it. If it was twice as long and took more time to elaborate on the puzzles they invented, it might have been great. The bugs will get ironed out, but the game is finished. It's a solid 8 hours of game, so it's a fair price for a pretty game with a cute, if under-explored, core mechanic.

However, one has to wonder if having such huge vistas was worth it? Take something like The Witness which is conservative in art, but beautiful and crammed full of puzzles and metaphysics, and it seems clear they hit some big challenges during development of Firmament.

You can see the ambitions, but you can also feel where the cuts where made and how the game was padded for time: 3 upgrades that don't really have enough puzzles to support their inclusion, very limited lore, and it feels like some distances were set to increase player the time in the game. (It's not a bad time walking around, it's a lovely environment, but.)

All in all, if you want a neat puzzle game, it's good, even at full price. You'll be disappointed that there wasn't more, but only because you enjoyed what is there.

There is a lot of positive feedback here, this is going to cover why I don't recommend it.

The first 12-15 hours of this game is *absolutely stellar*, but then the cracks start to show. As runs get longer and longer, you realize you have less and less control over what determines a good run from a bad run: the distribution of cards that determine what you can build is randomized (though I suspect it is massaged), so you may only see a copy or two of a given card within a run while you drown in a card you only need two of. As the variety of cards increases during the game, it becomes harder to pin down exactly what is worth trying. Do I just need to keep trying this combination, or should I change it? Some building pattern synergies repeat, others do not, and you start to waste more and more time looking for interesting combinations (if you don't look them up online, which is how I've played). Some cards are really important, others have extremely limited interactions. What's worth your time? There are some hints, but there are few opportunities to build on what you've learned.

Gear and leveling perks are all luck dependent as well. You do need to make intelligent gear choices, but you may also never get the gear you need.

The game's "clock" is determined by building tiles. In many ways I wish the game was balanced around a fixed number of loops rather than such a vacuous time suck of arbitrarily placing the last tile to trigger the boss fight. The game is very good at keeping you playing, it's incredibly well designed in many respects. I would keep playing if the grind involved in beating it was fun, but after a point there aren't new things to easily unlock, and the grind of the game becomes much more real.

This is a very engaging experience, but I wish the design had just decided to be something to finish with less friction, leaving some secrets to return to rather than trying to push you to grind through the final stretch of resource collection and building. I don't care about replay here, but if it's not asking for replay value, I want the end of this game to sparkle like the beginning, and it doesn't.

I finished the first two bosses, and I've been playing with the final class, and then switching things around. The design starts to feel sloppy compared to it's mysterious and sharpened self that you first encountered, gently nudging you to make the right choices with great music, a compelling story, and wonderful visuals to keep you tuned in. I'm almost done with the village tech tree, but I don't really want to grind any more. The music is starting to get too repetitive.

I was looking forward to seeing the end of this, but I don't think that I'm going to. The fact I don't want to finish it makes me feel less good about the time I had spent with it.

This game is completely worth the money, but I don't think it's worth your time.

This is a tough review to write. First out of the gate, I really enjoyed this game. I'm giving it a positive review with a huge caveat (noted at the end of this). I backed the Kickstarters, and I was really looking forward to this. It turned out really well! If you are an older millennial or you have a soft spot for circa 2000 games, then this will poke a lot of aesthetic feels for you.

No spoilers here, just some commentary.

The good: Everything through the end of Geocity was a blast. I love the tools. I love the story. I love the music. It felt like a smathering of AAA games from 2000. Captures some early Suda 51 feels. I aesthetically enjoyed the ending.

The bad: While this section is longer, that's not to undersell the merits, the bits I was less jazzed about require more explanation. The cruise ship felt like Jazzpunk and a Brandonsoft game offspring and felt like it fit less well than the others - that's not really bad? Just my take. More critically, the ending series of levels was a dark turn and frankly unwelcome? The end becomes massacore-light and it wasn't what expected or wanted from this game. I can see people quitting before the end, because the game gets much harder than the opening of the game intimates - and that kind of sucks? It's weird to make an exploration puzzler game into an extremely punishing mouse agility test to see a conclusion that you will want to see. I wish they had made an accessible ending for everyone and then had an alternative ending(s) for those that really wanted to git gud. Additionally there are some rather severe visual glitches and bugs that make you need to restart the application. Very rare, but they happen. No deal breakers. Finally, while I enjoyed the aesthetics of the ending, the message is muddled or didn't resonate with me? It's not subtle, it just doesn't feel like it's speaking to anyone in particular? I say this because it seems like it wants you to respond. I could have seen it going to a bunch of other different, more interesting places. It doesn't feel like people writing what they know, and instead seems to address a trope that is well trodden?

That said, I finished it, and I'm glad I did, but I provide a word of caution to anyone who plays the demo and expects a laid back chillwave game. That is not where this goes.

Reminds me of Cryostasis but with a very different emphasis on detective work. Highly recommended.

Very solid short-format puzzle-platform game. It has a really elegant difficulty curve. Simple and plasant story helps break-up the gameplay. Play it in parts or easyily do-able in a longer session. Very good game to play between other games or along side a more substaintial experience. Excellent soundtrack!
