Look at my hours played -
It's not even the total amount of time I've spent playing Destiny. Years of the game on battlenet, and hundreds of hours spend on Destiny 1. You might even say I love this franchise.
It's extremely unlikely i'll quit any time soon, barring some truly monumental mistake on their part, and Bungie knows this. This allows them to create a universe filled with players like me.

Let me tell you what its like, not to be a new player, but what it's like to invest your time in Destiny 2.
You will spend thousands of hours chasing the idea of what this game could be. Whichever area of the game you choose to play and improve at and enjoy - be it PvE with Grandmaster Nightfalls, Raids, and Dungeons, or the eternal ugly-duckling forgotten stepchild that is PVP. Or maybe you'll fall into one of the more niche ways to play the game - out of bounds explorers, Gambit players, comfy Patrol-zone idling, or seasonal activities. Ultimately the end-experience will be roughly the same:
To play and become invested in Destiny is ultimately an exercise in frustration that I can't in good conscience recommend.

At its best, it has absorbed my time and thoughts like extremely few other games have managed to do. At its worst, you'll wonder how people still play it. Most days though, it's just a treadmill designed to distract you from how much better it could be.
