After 28+ hours and some 30+ loops in the main game I can say this has become the most addictive roguelike for me and the genre as a whole will never be the same.

Gameplay is dynamic and extremely addictive with some nice depth thanks to melee, guns, skills and gadgets, all of which tend to synergise quite beautifully. Character air control is tight, we have counters, knockbacks, seamless action cancels and all physics in general feel spot on. Gore and gibs are aplenty which is a bonus for those who enjoy them. Once you get used to everything you become an (almost) untouchable killing machine executing everything along your path in the shortest amount of time. Doing challenges left and right, collecting weapons, logs and filling that gallery. Weapons are distinct and their physics feel just right, albeit some fall into the category of "NOT THIS !@#$ AGAIN".

Each level consists of a predefined number of pre-made-random-order "fight" tiles connected by not-so-random "connection" tiles which serve to teleport around and as story or shopping places. These tiles follow the level theme and each section is completely different from the next. Enemies, traps, gears, upgrades are randomised as well but follow the level theme and this keeps things fresh for the nth loop. Mini challenges on each combat tile add interesting twists and make you utilise various techniques to deal with the enemies. Restarting again and again makes you learn from your mistakes and you actually get better at fighting the enemies you know - until you get your ass kicked by the ones you don't or start getting careless.
Finally finishing a loop completely without dying allows you to retain all skill upgrades and weapons you were carrying and they can scale up the more you loop and perfect your death-bringing collection.

The story is quite elaborate and has a good flow. The groundhog day twist gives us some interesting situations and is nicely implemented by itself. Have to stop here to say "No" to spoilers. Just a tip: don't skip all after-boss cutscenes as they change a few times depending on how much you've uncovered or which paths you have taken.

The art design is stellar - a sight to behold. The attention to detail is incredible starting from level foregrounds and backdrops, it extends to enemies, animations, effects and even menu and icon styles.

English voices are fine, however I can recommend the Chinese voices for a more authentic experience.

Everything said, I've been itching for something like this for a long time and am glad it was made.

Best VR video player on steam so far.
Has a clean intuitive interface and supports crazy resolutions up to 8K.
Effortlessly plays all video formats thrown at it including 10bit HEVC and h265.

If this game was a new IP, standalone and not a sequel I would have probably given it a thumbs up for originality. However it failed to fill the shoes of its progenitor (not even counting the STCE content) and turned out to be a mundane clone of the first one. Maybe it was a rushed job, maybe the developers lacked enough vision to produce a worthy sequel, I'll list my pros and cons below:

== Pros ====
  • Flame Face is back
  • X'tabay as player character
  • Colorful chupacabra thingies...
  • Skill tree with unlockables based on player performance.
  • Better couch Co-op

== Cons ====
  • Extremely slow tutorial portion.
  • Unskippable story sequences. Talk talk talk. Way too much "story" in this one. Story is more infantile and less to the point.
  • Level design is extremely bland and forgettable from a structual point of view.
    It follows the formula: Enemy room > Gauntlet > Puzzle room > Chest room on the side > Platforming with a save altar. This repeats again and again until you clear the game. You even have less to do in cities than in the previous game.
  • Super chicken sequences are a completely pointless waste of time.
  • Nothing to do with your gold after you unlock everything (maybe the first game was the same, can't remember)
  • Unlocked costumes don't stay unlocked for a new game.
  • Some puzzles are overkill throw-the-gamepad-at-the-wall level annoying.
  • No skins to unlock for X'tabay as player character
  • Too much polo is bad for your health...
  • Last boss is the easiest in the game.

Another cynical "bullet"-list review:

Pros:
  • Many guns
  • Imaginative gun designs
  • Infinitely stacking passive powerups
  • Some humor and puns here and there

Cons:
  • Majority of guns feel weak / useless
  • Pointless clutter littering all rooms
  • Pathetic endgame imagine the Binding of Isaac where you went trough 5 basement levels and being lucky to get all the best powerups and items - then at the end the game strips you of everything and gives you one generic gun to fight the final boss for 10minutes relying only on your dodging skills. And NO - story reasoning does not excuse it.
  • Uncontrolled randomness - in games even randomness must be tweaked and rerolled as to not spoil the experience. I've had runs where every chest contained nothing but useless active items, runs with many chests and without a single key and similar. A game should value the time you invest playing it and not just waste it.
  • Rooms aren't random, they're just stitched to one another in a random manner. Enemy placement in some rooms is 100% identical every time you encounter it.
  • Lack of online co-op

VERDICT: An overall enjoyable experience marred by some annoying design choices,

Bugs, stuttering and lack of online play aside, I find this game to be hardly deserving of its positive reception:

Pros
  • Nostalgic 16bit presentation / anime aesthetic
  • Steins;Gate tune while playing with Kurisu
  • Level clear sound pays homage to Streets of Rage / Bare Knuckle
  • Harder modes have more enemies spawning
Cons
  • Cheap background design with extreme repetition of backdrops
  • Sub-par enemy variation even if you count recolors as new enemies
  • Annoying boss characters / repeating boss fights in a single playthrough
  • Extremely shallow and uninteresting story
  • Boring one-dimensional characters
  • Bad enemy impact physics and nonsensical hitboxes
  • Dual lane feature feels both underused and at the same time a flow-breaking gimmick
  • No alternative routes, everything plays out exactly the same way, every time
  • Below-average voice acting with annoyingly repetitive attack call-outs
