I love the atmosphere and world of Silksong, but it's simply too punishing and not rewarding enough for what it asks of the player. And I don't mean "difficult", but specifically — punishing. Everything costs money, I die in 3 hits even though I have 5 health, and then there's the massive runbacks every time I die. I'm playing (what I thought) was a Metroidvania but I never feel like I'm unlocking anything interesting or being meaningfully rewarded.

Got lots of currency? Spend it on checkpoints and fast travel.
Got charms to change your character? It's a compass and a magnet to make currency float towards you. There's a pretty significantly difficult boss (Widow) that turns into a bullet-hell game in its second phase. The reward for completing it? If I hold down triangle I play a melody that opens some doors. And if I somehow manage to use it in the heat of battle enemies will float towards me for a short period.

Shockingly underwhelming.

The incentive to keep going is not there. I think I'll put it down and hope patches pushes it in a direction I enjoy more. But Team Cherry would have to flip a lot of switches for it to turn into the rewarding Metroidvania I'm looking for.

Such a shame.

EDIT:
I have modded the game to remove double damage form most sources, increase my damage by 20%, and permanently have my compass enabled. That's helped. But still hasn't remedied the main problem of the game's lack of reward and I've just run into the perfect example:

There's a sidequest to deliver an item half-way across the map, it's on a time-limit, and every time you get hit you lose signifcant time. You can't fast travel. The map is BIG btw. It is VERY difficult. The reward?

You get one item (as I understand), needed of 5, to upgrade your weapon ONCE. I had to Google I understood it properly because I did not believe a dev would genuinly put the player through so much, for so little.

The game asks you to climb Everest, and rewards you with a pat on the back.

This would be an easy recommend: fun combat and upgrade trees with some nice level design and environmental variety.

But there's one problem: STUTTER. The game has abysmal shader-compilation stutter and it sucks any joy playing it right out of me. Unfortunately, the game is years old at this point so I suspect they'll never patch in a solution like automatically compiling shaders on game start. Otherwise I'd be happy to recommend it.

Such a shame.

As a Scot, I was so excited to play this game, credit to The Chinese Room, they knew where to put their marketing. But I am shocked about how much people are loving a game which, for me, has nothing going for it apart from great voice acting, and nice atmosphere.

PROS:
  • Unique setting.
  • Genuine and fantastic voice acting.
  • Authentic monsters, in as much as they still feel like the people they were before they turned into tentacle lasagna.
CONS:
  • Truly a walking simulator -- the most interactivity you have in pressing the button that appears in front of you.
  • Weak moster AI which makes stealth areas remarkably not scary. Monsters will often be right in front of a massive hole they can easily grab you through and will just sit there because the video game said they can reach inside.
  • No character development.
  • A story in which largely nothing of note happens. Almost all of your objectives involve going to some room, to turn some valve, or hit some button, because someone told you to. Ironically it feels like a completely normal day working on an oil rig.
  • No lore. Yep, that's right, no audio logs, no documents to find out about the world you're in (apart from maybe 1 or 2 in the entire game).
With such light player engagement, no lore, and menial tasks making up the majority of the gameplay, I found it impossible to care much about what was going on. Although even I will admit the presentation still makes some scenes hit their mark. As other people have shown, if you like walking sims, this might be for you. But for me? I'm pretty upset I spent £26 on a 5-hour game with no lore, no world-building, no character development, a mediocre story, and barely any gameplay.

To be clear: this review is a DO NOT RECOMMEND (RIGHT NOW), but unfortunately Steam does not have the option to leave a mixed review.

PROS:
  • The art style is lovely and the game is cute.
  • Exploring a small neat Japanese city feels like a fun callback to early 00's game design.
  • Smacking pots off of all walls to crush the skulls of pedestrians below never gets old.

CONS:
  • Some of the cringiest writing in video game history. That's an often overused word on the internet, and I don't say this to put the one writer credited on this down. But Little Kitty has the most forced, awful humour so bad it ACTIVELY makes the game worse. You forget how charming the game is when you're forced to listen to a cat explain what LOL and LMAO means.
  • This game is buggy. Three times I got stuck in geometry while jumping and had to restart. There were also several instances where collision would glitch out and I'd be thrown at 70mph across the map.
  • The game feels noticeably clunkier to play than Stray. Ideally running and jumping around as a cat should be the pull of this game but that's not the case. You don't jump nearly as high as cats can and movement feels sluggish. In the end, you feel less like a cat, more like a slightly overweight dog.
  • And last of all, you can do everything in 3.5 hours, for £20.

Unlike Stray, the short experience you have doesn't have an engrossing atmosphere or a mechanically satisfying feline best friend.

My girlfriend and I had fun with this, but it's £12 game, not a £20 game.

This game is the prime of example of a CAUTIOUS RECOMMEND.

My playtime seems currently glitched out as I completed the entire game on my steam deck over about 5 hours.

Exo One is beautiful and calming, but lacks any sort of story (regardless of what the credits will tell you). And the main gameplay loop of using gravity and momentum to throw yourself around often feels like fighting with the level design from getting in your way.

It is remarkably rare to get a nice flow going where you feel like some amorphous alien blob-bird thing that's loving life flying throughout the air and rolling down hills. But you will definitely get used to the feeling of being stuck somewhere struggling to get any sort of momentum going again. If that wasn't the case, this would be an easy recommend.

As it stands though, this is a cautious: "I enjoyed it, but only because I knew I didn't pay full price."

I have never. Never. Played a game that is as broken as this. Every session feel like the first week of an Early Access game in Alpha. Every single round I've played bar one has involved at least one crash to desktop. I played with my friend a few nights ago who hasn't experienced many crashes and my game crashed to desktop (I am not joking) 5 times in less than 5 minutes. I don't experience any other instability with my PC, and it's very well equipped with Ryzen 5900x and RTX 3060Ti.

The only reason I haven't issued a refund is because my friend and I don't get to play many games together and when you do start unlocking guns/abilities the combat is very satisfying.

The level design is terrible however. In fact, saying that would imply there are levels that were designed. Every mission feels like running around a randomly generated series of rooms with nothing of interest happening.

If you're looking for good CO-OP fun I'd recommend World War Z unless your obsessed with Warhammer and are very forgiving about performance/level design.

Unfortunately, I had major problems with this and had to get a refund. This game does NOT play nice with OBS. I have a very capable system but when this game runs in conjunction with OBS system usage goes through the ROOF. The game goes from High Settings, 1440p, DLSS Quality Mode at 60fps; to Low Settings, 1080p (yes, seriously) DLSS Ultra Performance Mode to get that same 60fps. This is all with an RTX 3060Ti and a Ryzen 5900x.

Aiming sensitivity can also NOT be adjusted from general camera sensitivity. So even though I found the normal camera controls fine, I had to make them super slow just so the aiming was a comfortable speed (this is a really basic aspect of game design, I don't know why this is a problem).

The game unfortunately still stutters even though there is a pre-game shader compilation step. And from my experience, the performances from the new cast are simply terrible next to the original. Compare the cutscene where you first talk with Kendra and Hammond again after the first encounter. In the original they are panicked and arguing because they all just saw a space alien rip apart their friend. In the remake they all act so shocking nonchalant they seem almost bored.

Even more worrying I haven't seen much of anyone talk about these issues. I'll be revisiting this on a sale in the future if these issues get addressed.

Fantastic boomer-shooter with an awesome art style and punchy guns. It currently has 16 levels which gave me a satisfying 3 hours of game time. Very happy with my Early-Access purchase and look forward to seeing where it goes. I do have a fair amount of constructive criticism though:

Areas To Improve

1. My biggest gripe with the game is the lack of an active way for the player to regain ammo: whether that's by using the madness mechanic, melee or a special active ability. So often would I run out of ammo and had to complete large combat encounters by shooting everyone slowly with my pistol.

2. Guns can be upgraded down separate paths that change their gameplay style a lot. When you upgrade down one path it locks you out of the other, but I would like to see these upgrades simply be different weapons entirely as some weapons feel like they fulfil such a different niche from what you were originally using. For example, the burst-fire machine-gun upgrades to the grenade launcher. Only after upgrading did I realise the machine-gun is a far more useful weapon the the grenade launcher.

3. The grenade launcher feels quite under-powered: it has a small blast radius and does not explode on contact unless it directly hits an enemy. Making it fairly useless in a game with such fast movement as this.

4. The Talisman ability that gives you infinite ammo does not have an indicator in the centre of the screen to tell the player when it has ran out. Much like Doom Eternal, the game is so fast-paced that you need indicators right by your reticle to tell you what abilities you have ready or are going to run out. With all the active abilities on the right-hand side of the screen I found myself forgetting about them entirely as it's very difficult to move your attention towards the edge of the screen during a hectic gun-fight.

5. The splash ability activates too slowly and could do with a larger hit radius as, once again, in a game this fast paced it's very easy to miss your target with the surprisingly slow wind-up.

6. The very cool Eldritch weapon in the final level feels fairly under-powered. It's functionally a rocket-launcher but, like the grenade launcher, has a small blast radius.

TL:DR Way more lenient than the previous DLC. Levels are gorgeous, better paced, and the sentinel hammer is a great addition to the arsenal. If you're a sadist of an Eternal fan who liked part 1, you'll probably find this too easy. If you, like me, found the difficulty of Part 1 exhausting, then you'll have a fun ol' time!

Unlike Part 1, this dlc is noticeably easier and depending on what you like, is a lot more or less enjoyable then Ancient Gods Part 1. I found part 1 exhausting not because it was "hard" but because it didn't know when to stop. The first mission was, for me, an hour and a half of constant counters turned up to 11, and even if you can get through it, I found it tiring having massive enemies spawning all around you, getting hit by shots you can't see for some times 10 straight minutes.

Part 2 gives you a lot more breathing room, with better paced levels, and better tools to deal with them. The sentinel hammer is an awesome edition, it's quick, stuns enemies (letting you catch your breath which is something that's been sorely needed IMO) and depending on what you combo it with will net you more health or armour. It's very useful and very fun, sure hope it stays as part as the toolkit for the next game.

The new enemies are, for the most part, a bit of a miss. The indestructible shield guys are a nice change since you have LOTS of explosive weapons you can get around them with which is surprisingly fun. The stone imps can be taken out with the hammer or the repeating shotgun blast but they're just imps so it doesn't feel like you're fighting anything different. The shielded barons are so easy to take down their shield and then once you do, well their just barons so it doesn't feel like anything different. And there are prowlers that now take away your ability to move quickly and the only way to get it back is to move close to them and punch them. Yes those things that move QUICKLY take away your ability to move quickly and then ask you to chase them, they're not very fun. And also there are screamers that buff other enemies, their just irritating inconveniences more than anything.

All 3 levels are gorgeous, the opening spectacle of the last level is suitably end of the world bad-assery. Together they're probably my fav of all the levels in the main game or DLC. You can do an extra encounter in each level to unlock a cosmetic which is nice for replayability, as doing 2 encounters in the one area can kind of break up the flow the level. Oh, also the collectable lore isn't long winded Warhammer 40K lore in this DLC, just short interesting snippets that actually explain things you might like to know which was neat. The writing in general is all over the p[lace in this game so having lore that doesn't make you sigh at the sight of it is quite nice.

Lastly the final boss is... Yeah, it's pretty bad. Doom Eternal struggles with fun bosses in general because you always have to wait FOR them before you can attack. You can't use all your arsenal to pick them apart. You just have to wait for this guy to flash green, then do your super shotgun blast, sentinel hammer, and wail on him while he's dizzy. Depending on whether or not he wants to play nice, I was running about in a circle for a FULL MINUTE just waiting for him to become vulnerable. And just in general, he's quite a disappointing spectacle considering you're basically fighting Satan.

I can see if you're an absolute sadist of an Eternal fan, you'd find this disappointing. For a lot of others, including myself, I found this really enjoyable. A well paced conclusion to the ancient gods adventure. Bar the final boss battle, seriously guys, hire someone new just for the bosses.

Visceral accessible fighting game fun. My girlfriend who has barely ever played any fighting games loves playing this together. Over-the-top gore is a hilarious spectacle. And it has a large roster with characters that feel different to play from one another. Only main criticism is unlocking everything with coins takes a loooong time as they're rewarded in relatively small amounts. But if you're just looking for some goofy fun and a surprisingly fun little story mode this is a great buy while on sale.
