A fantastic sequel to one of my favourite metroidvanias of all time, Ender Magnolia comes close to perfection. This is a mandatory purchase for any fan of the genre.

It isn't quite perfect. I think the game progression loses something in front-loading so many of the mobility power ups, and the level design has what I regard as comparatively few unlockable areas one can go back for. I suspect these two issues go hand in hand, since from only an hour or two into the game you have more than half the movement tools, it leaves fewer options a level designer can take to include currently inaccessible content.

And in terms of personal preference I liked the world, setting, and soundtrack of the first game more. The quality of all three remains phenomenal in Ender Magnolia, but I found myself drawn more to the prequel.

Gameplay however is a step up in just about every regard. Controls are tight, fights are challenging but fair (I never once felt like a death was cheap, it was always my lack of skill or knowledge), the abilities no longer having finite uses is brilliant, and in general I just can find almost nothing to complain about in how the game plays and handles.

Gameplay has the depth of a teaspoon, about as engaging as Cookie Clicker (literally, you're basically just mashing one button to slowly and tediously whittle down the enemy's enormous hp bar).

This isn't a game to buy, it's one to go watch on Youtube.

It's just Warframe but not as good, plus more aggressive monetisation (naturally, what else would one expect from Nexon?).

TFD isn't bad per se, it's just competent, middling, there's no reason to pick this up over something else.

Sex might sell a game, but it won't keep me playing it.

Great DLC overall, adds a great deal on top of the base game, though the performance issues kinda suck.

The whiners complaining about difficulty need to git gud, Souls games are supposed to be hard.

Forced PSN account.

Edit: Victory, no more forced PSN account.

Edit 2: Round 2, Sony still restricting this and their other games in 177 countries. Sony, just F off and let people have good things.

It's Ark meets Pokemon, with two tablespoons of fun and a healthy sprinkle of violence. That probably sells it to a lot of you immediately, it sold it to me.

Is Palworld derivative? Sure. The designs are very clearly inspired by Pokemon, ripped off even. Does that mean the game is a lazy piece of copy pasta? Absolutely not, work has been put into this game where it counts - the gameplay loop. It already plays well and has great potential to move forward from here.

Do note though, this is an early access game, many people don't understand that. While it does work remarkably well; it isn't feature-complete, it does have bugs (though almost nothing gamebreaking, and fewer than some AAA games I've played in the past 6 months), and it does have significant optimisation issues. In spite of that, it's already well worth the indie-tier price you're paying, just have some consideration and patience if you do buy in now.

Starfield isn't exactly bad per se, it's not a game that makes me quit in frustration or immediately uninstall because it's awful, but it's not good either.

To put it another way, after a lengthy play session, I close the game and wonder to myself "was I actually enjoying myself? Was I having fun?" If a game induces such a question, then the answer is no.

To compare it to Fallout 4, the closest reasonable comparison in Bethesda's portfolio, the gunplay is notably worse, the world decidedly less interesting, the content far too sparse (it feels like we've got the same amount of content, but spread across 10x the area), and the interface... Jesus effing Christ the interface, it feels like it was designed to get in the way and slow you down as much as humanly possible.

We're all used to Bethesda games needing improvement by the mod community, but this is beyond that. Starfield is an absolute mess which the mod community is going to need a superhuman effort to salvage. My advice is not to touch it yet, let the mod tools release, then give the modders (ie. people with creativity and competence) a year or so, then pick the game up on a deep discount.

The game has some nice ideas, but the moment-to-moment gameplay just isn't very fun.

They've misguidedly removed RNG from combat, presumably knowing how frustrating it is in XCOM to miss those 95% chance shots... a nice thought but this has contributed to making the gameplay shallow beyond belief, the other factor being the large number of actions you can take per turn.

Combat in XCOM involves moving your squad forward, keeping to cover, positioning yourself to minimise risks and maximise your offensive options. A fight will probably take a few turns as you manoeuvre your squad.

Combat in Chaos Gate involves spotting a group of enemies then exploiting the absurd number of actions you get to wipe them out on the first turn. Failure to do so is inconsequential, you'll take some damage, one squad member will be injured, but you can still take him on missions with no significant risk.

No firefight will ever happen like in XCOM, if a spawn of enemies do manage to get a turn, they use their absurd number of actions to ensure your taking cover was meaningless to begin with, since ranges are very short and movement distances are large, taking cover just means the enemy has to take a short walk to outflank you and hit you anyway.

But while the game removes RNG where it was a good thing, it inserts massive RNG where it's unwelcome. Getting new gear is all locked behind RNG (have a guy specialised in a particular weapon? Good luck, it's possible, likely even that you'll go much of the campaign without seeing a single one).

Then we've got their 'advanced classes'. Or to put it another way, you can't build the squad you want from the start. You're going to be half way through the game before you get half the classes, which are then slowly drip-fed to you via events. Another bad decision to put on the growing pile.

Oh and the game has no respect for its setting. Big, beefy, power armoured space marines. What protective value does that armour have? None (unless it's worn by enemies of course, they are allowed armour). Clearly what we're playing is actually a group of cosplayers who made it all out of cardboard. 'Ranged' weapons have no range to speak of. Few weapons feel like they have any punch to them either.

Many of these issues would be easily fixed... if the game had any mod support. It doesn't. None whatsoever. Honestly that's a pretty good reason on its own not to buy a PC game.

No one part of Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters makes me want to refund it or tell you it's a terrible game as such... but every part of it just seems to add up to frustrate and disappoint me a little bit more. It's a 40k XCOM game made by people who don't quite 'get' 40k or XCOM.

Great DLC, contains enough quality and quantity to justify its price.

Yes, I understand that it's a considerable price jump from past DLC, but as anyone who has ventured outside their front door lately can attest, everything is increasing in price. Games are not excepted from inflation, you don't have to like that reality, but sooner or later you do have to accept it.

If you like Pokemon, you'll like this. If you like Monster Hunter, you'll like this. If you wanted something a bit more grounded in realism than Pokemon, you'll like this. If you wanted something less skill-dependent than Monster Hunter, you'll like this.
