I wish Gone Home affected me more than it did.

It's a nice game, and I can easily see where all the praise came from - the storytelling (and the story) is good, the voice acting is excellent, and Fullbright absolutely nailed the atmosphere. I honestly had a good time snooping around learning about the family, plus the little gag about keeping the lights on made me chuckle.

It's just... After seeing all the adoration and scorn, I wanted to feel more than just a tinge of sadness once the credits rolled. After all the controversies, I guess I knew what to expect from Gone Home - it's old, after all. I know the story isn't as creepy as Fullbright is trying to sell it, instead being more tragic than anything else.

I'd still recommend playing this game - buy it, buy it on sale or a humble bundle, get it through other means - and writing about it. Because, love or hate or anything in between, this is a game worth talking about. And to me, not everything has been written about it.

Don't let the title fool you: SpaceChem is less about either space or chemistry, and more about programming automatons. The game gives you a periodic table, and that's all the chemistry knowledge you'll need for this video game.

With that out of the way, let's gush. SpaceChem is legit one of the best, if not THE best, puzzle video game you can get.

SpaceChem is simple at its core: you are given a board, a set of commands, a supply of set molecules and an output molecule the game expects you to make by moving and transforming the molecules you are given. Sometimes you get one board to play with, sometimes you get multiple boards to link together so you can deal with more complicated puzzles.

And oh boy does it get complicated. Beyond the tutorial missions, puzzles begins with "HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO DO THIS". Then you get an idea, then you test that idea. And then you either rework that idea because it MIGHT work, or scrap that idea because it is obviously not working. Rinse, lather and repeat.

But then you stumble upon a solution - YOUR solution. And as you watch your program go off without a single hitch, you feel like the smartest man that ever was. YOU did this. YOU have shown this puzzle who's boss.

And then you see the graphs and realise you are just an average person among other average persons. And as you come back down from your high, you load up the next puzzle, yearning for another moment of elation. But the puzzles gets more and more complicated and difficult. But the high gets better and better in return.

(Or until you just give up. Which isn't shameful - this IS a pretty damn hard game after all.)

That's how SpaceChem works its magic. Of course, the puzzles themselves are just as well designed as the core gameplay itself, and the difficulty curve is impeccable, with well placed spikes and breathers to keep it all interesting. The graphics serves their purpose just as elegantly, the music gives a tinge of epicness to your brain wracking, and hell, SpaceChem throws in a fun story of an engineer who realises his work is a lot more complicated than it appears at first glance.

SpaceChem is nothing more than a masterpiece.
