Disappointing Release Lacking Core Features

The Good
Performance - Sins II is able to run very clean all the way through the end game. The originals suffered from a single core engine which caused major lag in end game scenarios.

Multiplayer Features - The ability to join mid-game, take over AI, and pause the game are all great features that allow for a pretty smooth multiplayer experience.

New Gimmicks - The addition of planet orbit paths and the ability to scrub forward to see future orbits and how it changes hyperspace lanes is a very interesting change that allows for much more dynamic gameplay.

The Bad
Lack of Basic Settings - The game's settings are very minimal. So minimal in fact, that you cannot even choose your resolution. It should appall the consumer that a new release in 2024 lacks what has been an industry standard feature on pretty much every PC game for the past 25 years.

End Game Crawls - This was a problem in the older games as well. Don't get me wrong, the FPS does not dip in the late game, however closing out a game is still very time consuming and tedious. The final hour and a half of a very clearly won game is a lot of slowly forcing your way through systems while alt tabbing for a battle to go through and maybe reading a light novel on the side. This can be sped up a bit by the variable game speed control, yet still feels rather slow.

Spend 2x the Price for Cut Content - For what feels to be a remastered version of Sins I with a few tweaks here and a few content cuts there, learning that all of the new content will come at a later date in the form of DLC is rather disheartening. All in all it would bring a finished game up to the price of $100, much more than ambitious AAA titles and offering very little at that price point.

The Ugly
Camera Controls are Absolutely Terrible If you are like me and caught a bad case of vertigo trying to control your ships in a system with strikecraft, let me tell you a little secret. The game has a terrible feature that makes your camera follow a ship if it thinks you are looking at it. This means if you are trying to give your units commands in a battle (this is an RTS afterall, not Stellaris) you are left frustrated as your head is jerked all around the map. Remember those non existent settings we talked about earlier? Well, if you use ctrl-shift-s in the game, you can find the actual settings! Find
"camera.snap_to_unit_zoom_target_distance_to_cursor"
and lower the value. Changing mine to 100 fixed the issue. How this got through the beta without a single tester or dev noticing is beyond me.

Toggles for Information? If you want to see tactical information such as shields and armor, you are forced to use the terrible outliner in the top right (that is system specific, by the way) or press and hold the alt key. I would like to see more options that are just a toggle. If you are going to advertise your game as an RTS, then you should at least add in industry standard features for the genre.

AI Art and Reused Voice Lines The art for research and items is largely AI created. This AI art was trained on Stardock's art style, but it still stands out as pretty bad. Furthermore, the majority of voice lines in the game are recycled from the previous Sins games. Just for context, this is a game that they are expecting people to shell out $50-$100 for.

EDIT (added context:): These voice lines, while reused, have been rerecorded by the original voice actors as confirmed by the developers.

Consensus

Overall, I would not recommend Sins II at the moment. It offers very little for the price point and does not strive to be much more than Sins I on a new engine. While it would be easy for the average Sins fan to praise it for not lagging like the predecessors, I would like to remind the room that this is 2024, and releasing a game with multi-core support is the bare minimum and definitely not a reason to excuse a half-baked release like this at the current price point.
