This is the worse piece of garbage I've ever seen on Steam. The make it so hard to buy a game, so hard to play it, and then when you finally get it working it is in a warped picture squished into the center of your screen inside an arcade cabinet which takes up over half the screen. I want to play one game, darkstalkers, easily, in full screen. I'm sure eventually I would be able to get this by going through settings, etc, . In addition when I bought it I didnt know if it was the latest darkstalkers or not. The ingame menu for browsing games is horrendous, when you find a game you cant even buy it, you basically just have to search the steam store for it, so it is useless. I would strongly recommend just using some other way instead of this garbage, I will probably just refund this. I really wanted to buy this title and play it via steam but nooooo they had to make it so horrendously awful.

This game would be a lot better with support for 8 xbox controllers and 8 player split screen support (we have big tvs now). Just imagine how fun that would be? As it is, it can get boring quickly, but 8 player support would fix that.

The onslaught game mode with vehicles is the best ever. There is nothing like that since, even 16 years later. Sure the recent doom games have similar gameplay to unreal 2004 in non vehicle modes, but there is no game yet that has the same fast paced style as 2004 with the fun variety of vehicles. The vehicles in sw battlefront 2 for example, aren't nearly as usable or as fun and as useful in different strategic situations as in this game. For some reason no one has ever been able to come close to this. The only problem with the game is not enough people play it. A true masterpiece and best FPS I have ever played.

As a former AOE3 diehard player (used to play a LOT) about 10 years ago, I was really looking forward to this. I prefer AOE3 to AOE 2, but I learned and played AOE2 DE online for about 1000 hours, because my research showed that it had the largest player base. Larger player base I figured equals quicker matches with players of same skill, which is the most important for me. However I much prefer the unit variety and the fact that the whole game does not revolve around forward castles/towers (and using trebs shielded by forward castles to win, happens in almost every AOE2 game) in AOE3/AOM.

To my massive disappointment, AOE3 DE is still TOO FAR ZOOMED IN. Even at the 'very far' zoom level, it is still too far zoomed in. I hate scrolling the map all the time. Despite my repeated pleas during the beta, they did not fix the zoom level. This fact alone is enough to make me not want to play.

The game is horribly unbalanced. If you watch online/tournament games, you will quickly realize that you only see the same few civs over and over and over again, often a mirror. This sucks and is super boring. They completely broke the game with Swedes. The civ is super overpowered, and you can easily win spamming just one unit, the Carolean. Bye bye rock paper sissors counter system. Your opponent can spam one unit and win. You know exactly what they will do, and yet are powerless to stop them even if you make the correct counter/combination of counter units. I originally stopped playing AOE 3 because I got tired of always playing vs Japan spamming ashigarus. Now there is Japan AND Swedes, which are even worse than Japan, didn't think that was possible. I didn't even have to play the game online to realize this, just watch the tournament games on you tube. They aren't fun to watch at all and even the commentators know Sweds will win. (And often Japan will win too). Forgotten Empires admits they make new civs overpowered to get people to play them. Well, they lost a player in this case. Bye bye, I'm out.

I really recommend people not buy this, and instead buy Age of Mythology EE. Don't laugh. The reviews for it are 'very positive' for all time periods. The outdated graphics still aren't really that bad, and you can zoom out enough. You can get used to them, I'm telling you they really arent that bad. There is a 'camera unlock' option (yes, thank you, why not allow the player to choose a zoom level!!) you can adjust in the options to get a better zoom out- make sure to select 4k resolution also. I would much rather deal with outdated graphics and have a variety of super fun and different units and strategies. Just watch AOM tournament games online. Find them on youtube. They aren't boring (unless it is a water map, avoid those in all Ages games). While of course the player base is smaller, you CAN get matches with people of similar skill level, even within a few minutes!! So who cares if the player base is small as long as you can get similar skill matches. Yes with AOE3 you get some interesting strategies with the home city cards, but nothing on the level of the cool stuff you can do in AOM with god powers, myth units, unit buffs, 5 vastly different 'civs' (with the tale of the dragon expansion), with three gods each which further differentiate them, giving unit and strategy variation even within 1 civ, for a total of 15 different 'civs'. I'm switching over to AOM EE and suggest you do the same.

UPDATE March 27 2021:
I played this game a bit to check. Everything I said in my original review is unchanged. I went online and faced a Japan player buildling only Ashigaru and then the next game a Swedish player building only Carolean (Swedish version of Ashigaru). How lame and boring to face just one unit. If the game balance wasn't messed up, this wouldn't happen. Is this even an RTS anymore? Build just one type of unit and whoever has more of the unit wins? No civ variety because everyone just picks Swedes or Japanese? These are all game balance issues. What is the point of having a bunch of civs if you never face them in ranked because the game balance is all wrong? The way to know the game balance isn't messed up is look at the online stats. You should see a variety of civs and units produced. If this isn't the case, you know you have some balancing to do. Its very elementary, yet they refuse to do it. Its a shame because otherwise this game would be super fun and awesome, except for the massively zoomed in view. If they fixed the zoomed in view and the game balance, this game would be a 10/10. Sadly, my hours playing this game will remain low/none until they fix these super big issues.

Edit APRIL 26 2021
---------------------
I went online to play this last month and was pleasantly surprised. I hardly ever see Sweden anymore (they are still horribly overpowered though- they can just build 'torps' all over the map and you cannot burn them down because they have too much hp: same issues as Japan except Japan has shrines). If I see Sweden or Japan I just quit immediately and take the loss, so I don't have to play against them. (Its zero fun). With the new DLC for USA it seems people forgot that Japan and Sweden are overpowered and so they don't pick them as much. It means you can go online and see a greater variety of civs! So its worth playing now, and very good if you don't match with Japan or Sweden.

As soon as I found out it had no VR support, I refunded the purchase. I have no desire to play a racing game in non vr ever again after playing in VR, with a wheel, it is a completely different and vastly superior experience.

My mistake for assuming a codemasters title would include vr though.

The game ran up until where I was climbing ladders and walking across beams. Then it crashed. It also sometimes crashes right in the beginning. Since you cannot save your game as far as I know, or skip the cinematics (is the game anything more than cinematics?), it means to get past a crash point I would have to sit through 10 minutes of the same cinematics again.

I have the latest WMR installed as of the date of this review, and I have an hp reverb v2 headset. It doesn't crash on any other game in my extensive vr library, so the fault must be this game. Please update the game do it does not crash with WMR headsets. I don't know if the game is good or bad because I cannot get past the crash point. It looks really cool.

I strongly recommend you get gzdoom with vr motion control support and the 3d monsters/weapons wad files instead of this. It is way way way more fun.

Doom VFR: You have a lot of down time walking around getting lost and not knowing what to do next exactly. I mean come on, I am using regular locomation, and yet I have to somehow know to teleport up onto some pipes to continue? How I am ever supposed to figure that out without watching a youtube walkthough video? Teleport SUCKS but they made it an integral part of this game. You can melee combat or teleport into monsters to kill them and get health which springs up magically in cheesy gems. Compare that to using a 3d chainsaw in doom 2 vr.

Classic doom with vr mod: fast paced, fun, clever levels, interesting levers and switches but you dont get lost and there isn't any boring wandering around getting lost. Immensely satisfying using the 3d chainsaw. Doom is not a puzzle game. Also, classic has a massive base of wads, levels and mods, including multiplayer with bots (doomvfr has none of these). People are still making these. You can pimp up your graphics a lot or keep it with the classic looks or anywhere inbetween. There is really no comparison at all. The gameplay and funness of the original is 100x better than doom vfr. Its surprising that this port is so bad actually, I would have thought there was no way to mess up doom, but they managed. Again, please get gzdoom with motion controls. All you have to do is buy doom2 and use that wad file with it. A lot cheaper, and 100x BETTER.

I played a lot of Age of Empires III, and Age of Mythology. I preferred the unit/villager autoque feature of AOM, because I don't like having to try to remember to que villagers all of the time while trying to deal with everything else, it causes me to fall behind and lose a lot. So, AOM I am able to stay more competitive.

However, the online population of players playing is about 10x or more for this game, it is the non-sci fi game with the most people playing, period. If a game has the largest player base, even 20 years after it first came out, there must be a reason for that. High online population of players = more likely to be able to find a match with players of similar skill = more fun. I have practiced and watched online pro games with commentary and have become familiar with build orders/ strategies and the far reaching consequences of what appear at first to be minor civ bonuses (in other words they have a lot larger effect than one would think). And I became more appreciative of the deep strategic elements in the game, which might at first not be apparent. (Recommend watching 'break the meta' videos which tend to highlight some of these elements).

It is actually quite incredible that this game has 31 civs?( if you get all of the DLCs), all of which have their own unique units /lack of other types of units, techs and civ bonuses, and yet it is still balanced. When you go online there doesnt seem to be anyone spamming the same civs over and over, which is almost guarnateed to happen in most online games (such as street fighter where everyone is laming Ryu constantly). And, you can view the players skill ranking before you decide to play a match, which is absolutely the number one critical variable to having a fun game. Surprisingly, you can find people online that you at least can feel you have a small chance of beating, just make sure not to play anyone way above your ELO rating.

It would be cool if AOE definitive edition had an online rating system, that way maybe people would actually play that game online as well, although AOE2 is still probably a better game, and its really actually quite awesome on a large screen in 4k because you can see a lot of the map without having to scroll around and the units are small but not too small if your screen is big enough. And there are graphical mods which can be easily enabled/installed by simply going to 'workshop' and clicking 'subscribe' next to whatever mod you want. And as far as I know, the mods don't break online functionality at all. There are even custom AIs you can enable in the same way. As if that wasn't enough, there are tons of custom scenarios and campaigns, etc for those who prefer single player, although myself I'm trying to get good enough to win online. It is an extremely difficult game to get good at, by that I mean good enough to have a chance of winning online, but I'm up for the challenge.

One thing that sucks is the default AI, on standard difficulty and lower he barely makes any units, and on moderate it is a ridiculous jump in difficulty level, would be nice if there was some kind of middle difficulty. As it is now, 120 hours in, I am just becoming able to beat moderate, but only with certain civs. What I do is save the game, then if my attack fails, I reload the saved game after thinking what I could've done differently and try again, that way I don't have to restart again all the way from the dark age and can get more practice microing and building the proper units in the proper quantities. Also, rewatching replays of my own games helps me see where my errors were. All in all, this is THE RTS game to play online at the moment, if you like the pre 1900 time period and more of a focus on macro and economy vs. micro.

This game is fantastic, as good as Skyrim VR. It is like playing with tiny detailed realistic army figures, a childhood dream I'm sure many share. Looks so cool! And I have over 70 vr games. This is a REAL RTS game; some other reviewers are saying that it isnt. It almost caused me not to buy the game, because I'm not a fan of tower defense games. It is a real RTS because the troop trucks are sort of like economic buildings in that if you destroy them it messes up the opponents production of troops. There are several factions you can choose from, each with their own unique unit types and with different unit costs. That adds to the strategic aspect a lot!

In other words, they have distilled down the essence of the fun of RTS games and removed all of the annoyances of RTS games, which is the control interface (i.e. mouse and keyboard or controller) and dumb micromanagement (i.e. farm management in Age of Empires). And multiplayer is very well done also. What caused me to suck at RTS games before (I never had godlike finger speed with mouse and keyboard) is now gone and I find that I can actually win when playing this online! In fact I am planning on buying another PC and VR headset just so I can play locally with my friends. If they make it 4 player, then I will buy three pcs/vr headsets (or maybe psvrs because that is cheaper, it is cross platform too!), that is how good this game is.

There are only a few extremely minor gripes that they will probably fix, when using a vive the chaperone ring is visible beneath the game board the entire time, it is a bit annoying and I tried adjusting the chaperone ring opcacity to no avail. I have a mixed reality headset also and there is no ring when using that device. Also, the "Light Gun" is messed up. In a few games, it sometimes wouldn't fire even when I placed it right near some tanks and told it to shoot at them. In a multiplayer game, it would fire across the whole map creating a totally OP and unwinnable scenario. I positioned my anti tank tank and it could seem to fire at them unless it was exactly at the same elevation level, quite tricky if not impossible to achieve and yet the light gun didnt have those limitations.

These early access bugs aside, Whatever DLC or adds ons they make, I will buy it all!!!! Thanks so much for making this game, I am now excited about VR again!!

Update May 15th: While everything I said above is true, unfortunately the game is severely unbalanced, such that you will very likely face the same opponent (Galland) everytime you play multiplayer, because it is severely overpowered, so of course everyone picks it. If they fix the balance (which will soon be evident when there is an even distribution of players across all of the factions), then I will start playing it again, as it is now it is just silly to bother playing. I alerted the developer to this and the response was 'we are seeing a little more diversity now' not, 'we fixed the balance issues'. And no, it is still overwhelmingly "Galland" as of today. I suppose I could just pick Galland also, but I hate being a lamer and mirror matches are boring. I will update this review if they ever fix the balance (they might, after all it was early access).

If you are looking for an up to date pre 1900s period RTS game, great news, THIS IS IT/THE BEST.

I have played the game for 26.4 hours (Both single player campaign and multiplayer 1v1 vs a buddy) since it was released (three days ago, I got it two days ago), and I have 425 hours playtime in Age of Mythology Extended edition and 45 in AOE 2 HD edition. I have never played/heard of a Cossacks game before, I just was lucky enough to bump into a you tube video on it when I was looking for a more recent RTS game set in the medieval period-pre 1900s.

This game is an absolute dream come true. It takes everything that irritated and annoyed me about Age of Empires and similar type games and fixes it/does it better.

1) Ability to auto que all units including villagers (AOM has this too)

2) The pace of the game and troops movements, everything, means there is less focus on how fast someone can click a mouse, leaving you with more brainpower to use actual strategy. Stratagy such as troop formations, baiting and use of decoys to trick enemies while flanking with other troops, stealing villagers, capturing/destroying buildings, etc. etc.

3) Eliminates many of the cheap CHEESE tactics so common place in AOE type games, for example you cant go around spamming military buildings or towers or castles. My friend tried to beat me with his usual b.s. tower/tc spamming b.s. strat and he LOST ha ha ha ha. Instead, legitimate and crafty tactics and back and forth wars are fought in large scale, and its awesome!

4) Less fighting with your units clicking a thousand times. There is micro, and it is important, but its pleasant and not a click fest.

5) Numerous other cool touches such as troops running and battling through forests (you can even hide in forests and your opponent might not see you!), really awesome looking cannon fire with smoke (best Ive ever seen in any rts tbh), ability for troops/peasants to die of starvation without food, or other maladies to occur if short in other resources, ability to capture enemy buildings/artillery/peasants/mines, officers and marching drummers, and numerous other little touches that make it obvious its in a class above others.

6) More civilizations choices, more unique things about each civilization, more upgrades

7) Even though it sounds complicated, its actually easy to jump into and it has an excellent tutorial to get you up and playing quickly- so even RTS noobs can jump in easliy.

I can't think of anything else I would want added, its basically the perfect game that I would have tried to make myself.

OK, now you're probably worried about the bugs, which tragically has given this game 'mixed' reviews instead of 'very positive'. There was a really worrisome bug in which my mouse would not work at all unless I disabled 'display scaling' (google it if you dont know what that is), fortunately by reading the 'bug thread' I was able to reduce my display scaling to 100% and I can now play in 4k and mouse works. They are fixing this issue and most others at lightning speed- shockingly they actually are reading the bug thread and are actually fixing the bugs quickly- the other two bugs I had and commented on in the bug thread are already fixed!

The game has never crashed on me, and is totally worth buying right now, as it is. Steam has a refund policy if you are worried about 'bugs'.

Playing against my friends is awesome, I bought extra copies to play on my home LAN (it doesnt have official LAN play, you still have to go through their multiplayer servers, but it works for a local LAN party). As far as playing versus 'the amazing internet dudes who have way too much free time on their hands', the only way that will be enjoyable is if they add some kind of accurate skill rating or ranking system, so people of equal skill levels can play each other. There might already be something like that in place, I did see some number in the multiplayer but I'm not sure if its related to player skill or not.

The single player campaign is HARD even on the easiest difficulty. But its amusing- carefully read the tips that come up during the campaign, such as when they advise you to build up forces but not too long (because the opponents will get too strong). Brute force isn't always the answer, try to think of a tactic to accomplish your aim using the correct unit/s for the task.

In summation, there isn't any other pre 1900s RTS game anywhere near as good as this game is, and I've tried most all of em and described why this one is superior. Reading the sky is falling reviews about bugs..... the play experience is really great, doubt you'll even notice any and if you do, get the steam refund.

AWESOME GAME BUY IT
