Extremely fun game with the a strategy/rogue-like genre mix akin to Into the Breach.

Definitely needs more content and meta-mechanics to keep things interesting between runs. But a phenomenal start for early access!

This game has no right being this good.

I personally have not been drawn to the emerging genre of (vampire)survivor-likes but this game has just the right amount of panache to get me hooked.

This is NOT another Darkest Dungeon, as many other reviews have said. As long as you go into this game with that in mind, you will easily see it as the stellar rogue like that it is.

I would also recommend watching a little bit of game play prior to making up your mind about picking this up. I would expect that several of the negative reviews of the game are from people who found the changed systems too jarring.

I've absolutely devoured the game so far and love it just as much as the first one!

A great game with a fun and addictive gameplay loop! Definitely needs more content, but there is a great foundation here and already news of updates to come. Hopefully we get more keepers, more domes, more gadgets, skins, pets, etc.

For me the gameplay loop is addictive enough and perfect for my needs (aka a podcast game) so I'm not miffed as far as content is concerned. But if that's a priority for you, just wait for a sale or for more content!

Quick Review: Another must play title from Klei. Why am I surprised?

Hot Lava is easily one of my favorite Klei games, and one of the few I've 100%ed. It combines the thrill of speedrunning with a fantastic momentum-based movement system to deliver an iconic title in the niche sub-genre of speedrunning/time trial platformers.

For those familiar with this genre, if you've found any kind of enjoyment from other similar titles (SEUM, Remnants of Naezith, etc) you owe it to yourself to play this game.

For those unfamiliar with this genre, while most speedrunning/time-trial games are not for the faint of heart, Hot Lava functions as a great entry-point to this style of games, and is perfectly enjoyable to play on a casual level. So, once again, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

Verdict:
It's Klei, it's amazing, it's addictive. That's all you need to know. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buy it.

The well-intentioned, but ultimately inferior little brother of Darkest Dungeon

This is going to be more of a "Meh" review from me. While I love all the individual genres this game brings together (deck building/stategy/rogulike), I find the ultimate package to be quick lacking at the end. Here's my breakdown:

PROS

+ Dope art. It's like Darkest Dungeon meets Sci-Fi and I love it.
+ Great side quests with good writing, sometimes offering pacifist and non-pacifist routes (my favorite feature by far)
+ Very nice skill tree with awesome specializations for your characters. Just wish there was a way to re-spec in endgame.
+ Interesting, expansive, huge dungeons that take several expeditions to fully explore. Unlike Darkest Dungeon, the dugeon's layout stays the same, so you definitely feel like you're trying to conquer a specific ship/dungeon.
+ Each dungeon has a specific questline that you slowly unravel as you explore and talk to the NPCs. Some ships will require you to pass a 'test', others will require you to figure out how to fix a corrupted AI. Most of these quests are multli-step, and give you a nice feeling of immersive storytelling (in a small way)
+ Combat is satisfying at its core, though there are many problems which I will explore

Welp, that's it for the good stuff...

CONS

QOL; It's so, so freaking bad. This is most obvious when it comes to selling useless loot (which you get a A LOT of) at the shop. You will soon realize that there is absolutely no way to sort your selling inventory, nor is there any way for you to mark an item as "junk" when you pick it up. This means that you'll end up paging through your huge inventory through dozens and dozens of loot items that you don't even remember anymore, trying to find stuff that you don't need. Close to end-game you will realize that you don't even need the money anymore as you've maxed out your tech tree, and you'll just start ignoring the garbage loot to spare yourself the headache...

Overabundance of loot: Now, this is usually a good thing, and I admit I do like most of the loot in this game, but circling back to the QOL issues, there is absolutely NO WAY to directly compare loot to your current equipment. You have to manually scroll and experiment to try to figure out if a new piece of equipment is actually worth a damn. And in the case where you immediately realize that it IS good, there's no way for you to directly equip it from the pick up screen, and you'll have to pick it up, go scroll through your inventory to find it, and then equip it.

Unclear mechanics: After almost 20hrs of gamplay (and beating the game), I still don't know what TAUNT does, what the purpose of cover is, what 'MECHANICAL' means, why only some attacks seem to trigger BLOCK, why the attack damage for the same cards seems to change slightly every other combat (even with the same equipment) etc, etc. Even with a limited in-game wiki (which can be useful), the mechanics of combat are just so strange and inconsistent that I gave up on trying to understand them at all. Which is a shame because the combat, at its core, was certainly enjoyable.

Inability experiment with characters: The best part of Darkest Dungeon is the ability to shape your party and experiment with different classes and mechanics. Unfortunately, Derelicts completely throws in the towel on that one, as you have ONLY ONE ROSTER. This means that you choose your 3 characters/classes at the start of the game, and that's it. The best you can do is REPLACE one of your characters with a new one, but you will lose the old character, such that your maximum roster will always stay at 3. I have no idea why this wasn't properly implemented, as I feel like I barely had a taste of all the possible synergies and strategies that comes with different class setups. It's a real shame.

RNG: This is pretty much the backbone of Darkest Dungeon as well, so I won't be too harsh on this point. But I will say that sometimes you run into encounters that instantly stun/fear your entire party on the very first turn, and can very possibly just instantly kill you before you get the chance to DO ANYTHING. In addition to this, end-game enemies (aka the final boss) seem to target your primary damage dealers with "can't use weapons" cards, and then buff themselves with an INSANELY OP block that completely negates the next 5 hits they get, aka 2-3 turns of damage. It gets ridiculous...

Verdict:
Buy it if you got it in the $1 Humble tier, or get it at a deep discount. It's a good game, and I wish I could recommend it, but honestly after finishing the game I kind of wish I'd spent those ~20hrs on Darkest Dungeon instead...

Quick Review: A staple of the roguelite genre

One of the most challenging, bullethell-y roguelites I have played (far more difficult than Isaac or Gungeon). If a difficult, arcade-y roguelite suits your fancy, Nuclear Throne has all that covered in spades. Tons of unique characters, a lot of level/enemy variety (with a lot of secret areas!), a bunch of unlockables, and a metric ♥♥♥♥ ton of GUNZ!

Buyer beware, there is unfortunately a 30fps lock. While I would much prefer to play at 60fps (and there is a mod to do so if you'd like), I personally don't feel like it has detracted from the experience or the responsiveness of the game! It honestly doesn't feel like 30fps.

Verdict:
Worth every penny, regardless of sale. This game goes up there with the likes of Isaac and Gungeon to form the roguelite trinity, so if you like either of those games, you will get your money's worth here as well.

Quick Review: It's... okay

This is more of a 'meh' review bordering on positive. While I usually love puzzle games, this particular genre of "think differently" antichamber-like puzzle games has become tired for me. This game has quite a unique design and interesting puzzles, which is why this is not a negative review. But its habit of being opaque/vague just for the sake of being vague gets old quickly, and sometimes leaves you without any actionable information.

One thing that particularly grated on my nerve was its use of the incredibly tired 'your computer is part of the game!' mechanic, where you have to control a specific minigame with your PC mic. This would be fun, except the game is incredibly buggy regarding mic input, and is very inconsistent in responding to the mic....

Verdict
Lukewarm recommendation. Get it on sale, you'll probably get an hour or so of "quirky" entertainment.

Quick Review: An indie love-letter to Souls-likes

Immortal Planet is like a condensed and concentrated Souls experience, composed of everything that makes the franchise great. I'm astonished that the game didn't get more coverage/reviews, as it's definitely one of the best indie Souls-likes I have played.

PROs
+ Tight controls, and methodical combat
+ Breathtaking cell-shaded aesthetic
+ Great progression/pacing
+ Fantastic multiphase bosses
+ Satisfying "challenge" rooms which reward you greatly for your skill
+ Great replayability due to significantly different starting weapons, Nightmare difficulty, and NG+
+ Stats are easy to understand, and don't overwhelm new players
+ Dripfeeds new weapons and items at a satisfying pace

CONs (mostly nitpicking)
- Extremely frustrating at times, like all souls-likes
- Possible to dash into gaps accidentally
- Methodical combat = slow combat. I like the pace of combat, but it may turn off some
- Challenging to figure out where you're supposed to go sometimes
- Difficult to build a purely mage build (but magic is great in general)
- Wish there was a map...

Verdict
Must buy for any Souls fan looking for a tight, challenging game that does not outlive it's welcome. Heavily recommended.

Just get a proper platformer instead

This game is honestly less of a platformer than it is a test of how vigorously you can flick the analog stick left/right... I wish I was joking.

The wall-jump mechanic just ruins this game (it could be solved by implementing 'jump-jump' instead of analog movements for wall climbing).

Just get another platformer instead.
