This is a perfect investigation VN game, in my opinion. This scratched an itch for thoughtful, smart, engrossing mystery that I didn't really even know I had.

Gameplay-wise, it's essentially Ace Attorney. However, the writing and characterization is so much stronger and more interesting than anything I've experienced with Ace Attorney. It's really a masterpiece.

I am greatly enjoying the game so far! It's a visual novel/SRPG hybrid featuring some really interesting mysteries and good characters. The characters are all extremely over-the-top but it means that there's a lot of variety. If you liked any of the Zero Escape games you'll like this. The strategy gameplay is also fun, playing more like a puzzle at times than a pure tactics game.

Update after beating the first ending: OH MY GODDDDDDD this rivals Shadowbringers for characters and storytelling. Unbelievable. And there's way way way more after the first ending.

Very good and worth your time! The core mechanic of linking hotlinked ideas to investigative questions is simple and interesting. Every now and then a character's testimony will make you pause and go "that doesn't make any sense" which really intensifies the mystery of the game. It's smartly written with a very strong opening hook (something a lot of mysteries can struggle with).

Fantastic game! Highly, highly recommend it! Really nails the wuxia genre in characterization, tone, and plot. I was very impressed by the amount of content in the game and the amount of improvements made by the developer since it was released.

The leveling system is really unique. It took me a couple of hours of playtime to really wrap my head around it. Basically you want to focus on the meditation techniques as those unlock the qi points that actually buff the characters. The combat is fairly simplistic as far as tactical games go because it's more about setting up your character abilities and combos prior to the fights. Once you get attacks that buff your movement, you can start backstabbing every attack and it gets silly. But that's part of the fantasy and part of the fun.

The game has a lot of gorgeous locations and the pixel art is really well done. There's lots of mechanics to the game, but honestly a chunk of them can be ignored. The materials collecting/crafting system takes a lot of time and to be honest rarely produced any items better than what you get through playing the game normally. And it uses up stamina which is surprisingly limited. So don't feel bad if you ignore those elements. The "learn moves from high-trust characters" mechanic doesn't matter in the early game but lets you learn a TON of super useful moves later on. I would ignore it until you're in the later parts of the game.

Finally, I want to talk about recruitable characters. There's a TON and the majority are missable if you move the main plot forward or make certain choices. There are good guides on Steam that talk about how to recruit the characters and complete their quests. These side quests are some of the most entertaining and fun content in the game and it would be a shame to miss them. AND you unlock new content/dialogue if you have certain characters in your party later on. If you don't want to use a guide for spoiler reasons, I recommend trying to complete as many side-quests as possible before moving the main story forward as soon as you become a Wudang disciple. Basically any time a new area opens up, try to talk to all the NPCs and visit all the areas before you start working on the main quest.

I've had a very good time playing this game! It nails the wuxia vibes and the Ace Attorney-style gameplay works surprisingly well in this setting. The Chinese-to-English translation is good, with some puns and jokes thrown in (which seems like a staple of any Ace Attorney-style game). It's not perfect, but at no point was I unable to follow what was being talked about. The art style is unique but I grew to really like it! And the voice acting is nice.

The cross-examination is on a timer, but you get unlimited tries. So don't stress about the timer. Also, the game narrows down what pieces of evidence you can submit for the cross-examination which makes it easier to find relevant clues (but doesn't eliminate the challenge).

One criticism I have of the game is that at certain points the game will ask you to make logical deductions where lots of concepts are floating on the screen and you have to click on the right ones. The concept is fine, but I think it must work better with Chinese characters because the sentences are hard to read in English because they wiggle around. Thankfully if you hold your mouse over them they pause. But I think that system could have been executed a little better.

The second criticism I have is that when you are browsing through cross-examination statements, the game will slowly reveal the text instead of having it all written out. That is fine for the initial dialogue, but it was a little annoying when finding statements to contradict. And it adds pressure to the timer. This is a very minor thing, and as I mentioned before, the timer doesn't matter because you get infinite retries.

I would really like to see another game in this series!

The story and setting for this mystery are surprisingly deep and difficult to unravel. But it's absolutely worth it.

Here's the deal though: you HAVE to use the foot baths. Playing the game before and after using the foot baths is like night and day. It makes the game far more enjoyable. Also don't stress about blood crystals. There's tons of extra ones so if you miss some it's not a big deal at all.

This game is unbelievable. Incredible. Pinnacle of the stealth genre. I'm not the kind of person who replays games or hunts for achievements, but this game makes it fun to just TRY THINGS. There's a level in Japan where you can unlock starting in a ninja outfit and it's 100% possible to just do the whole level while dressed like a Ninja sneaking around.

The gunplay feels good. The stealth kills feel good. There's even humor in the game! Most levels probably have over a dozen ways to eliminate each target. You're rewarded for listening to NPCs talk. You're rewarded for finding alternate entrances. You have a lot of flexibility in how much help you want the game to give you, with lots of settings to fiddle with. I'd recommend turning Mission Stories to "minimum" so that you have an idea of what to do but you're not being hand-held the whole time.

The only thing that sucks is how they've chosen to sell the game. It's an always-online type game which is... fine but not great. I haven't had any interruptions while playing thankfully, but a lot of early reviews mentioned getting disconnected. I assume it's gotten better. Also the variety of packages available is bewildering.

Let me make it easy: buy this game. And then also buy the GOTY Legacy Pack. That includes all the levels from Hitman 1's campaign and the Patient Zero DLC, all using Hitman 2's mechanics and updates. If you like the game, you can fiddle around with more DLC, but what I just described is probably enough for at LEAST a hundred hours worth of rewarding, non-grindy content.

This is a good game. If you like isometric RPGs, you'll love it. If you like story-heavy games, you'll love it. If you like cyberpunk stuff, you'll love it. I think we're very lucky that Harebrained Schemes was able to make Dragonfall and HK. They're both excellent and worth playing.

The obvious comparison for HK is with Dragonfall. The setting for both is somewhat exotic compared to the usual Shadowrun setting of Seattle. Both have similar setups. You lead a group of Shadowrunners on missions to pay the bills while a more personal, but more complicated mission slowly opens up to you. You have a hub zone with NPCs you can interact with and help/exploit. The combat is largely the same. If you liked Dragonfall, you'll like HK.

I do have some nitpicks, though. The NPC dialogue in the hub zone can get a little wordy. I'm no stranger to reading text in an RPG, but honestly after the third time having to run around the hub zone reading about everybody's multiparagraph problems, I started to lose interest and just skim. The decking sections where you're in the Matrix weren't implemented that well. It's a live-action stealth section where your movement isn't precise enough and the camera system limits your visibility in frustrating ways. I also found that the game tended to lag in the Matrix and in the hub zone and that the game takes a long time to save. I don't recall if this was also an issue in Dragonfall.

Overall, I had an excellent time with this and I highly recommend this game.

This is a good game. I think the ending to your first playthrough is a little cliche, but it's fine it fits the theme well. I think you can get different endings on your New Game Plus playthrough, but I'm not super interested in playing a second time. Mainly due to the walking speed, which is very slow. If you could run through larger areas, I'd say it'd be a little bit better.

As is, a solid 8/10 and worth the time.

The gameplay is great. The rooms are challenging but not frustrating to escape from. And the way you move from story to story is interesting. You slowly get a sense of how events connect together and it feels really rewarding completing a path and realizing how the whole story unfolds.

The game has some problems for sure. The animation is stiff, some of the menu navigation isn't intuitive, some of the characters are portrayed radically different from their previous incarnations. But it's all pretty minor. I think the story has a worse twist than VLR and there are a number of things the plot either criminally hand-waves or completely side-steps altogether.

But it's worth playing. This was a game that was never supposed to happen. On a platform which it was never supposed to be on. Made by a guy who was completely flabbergasted that people still wanted him to continue making games. It's not perfect, but IT HAPPENED, and that's ultimately what matters to me, as a fan.
