I made this account because I had to in order to play Half-Life 2 when it launched a million years ago when the internet was new. I was angry about having to create a Steam account, because the idea of requiring and relying upon the internet to provide a service seemed like a downgrade for me as a consumer.. creating a digital "cord" that ties a local thing that I control to third-parties I do not control. "We're Steam, a digital game service company from the future! Wanna play our game? Ok first, connect to the internet and login to this app! Then Update! Then look at these ads! Then load your game!" GROSS!!! But I also saw back then the inevitability of it.. of course companies were going to force me into consumer corrals where they get their slice of control and influence over me in my personal private space. Nowadays there are tons of launchers, but back then, it was new! But when I learned about how Steam worked offline I felt a bit better. And over years, I have ended up loving Steam. The end.
