In Death by Scrolling, the world literally scrolls upwards relentlessly as the player moves through a variety of environments full of monsters. Sometimes attack is the best form of defense, sometimes skillful evasion is. Time and again, you have to weigh up whether to take the risk of collecting a valuable quest item or choose the safe route to survive longer. There are a total of 5 characters to unlock and play, each with unique abilities and influences on the power-ups distributed across the map. Each run consists of several levels, with the goal of reaching the next camp in each one to earn new power-ups and a quest. Although the levels are random, the individual segments are built by hand. You really notice this, and, over time, you get to know the world.

Since all weapons and abilities have a limited lifespan, your approach can change dramatically in the middle of a level. Sometimes you must switch from melee combat to ranged combat or magic in the middle of a level, or you are forced to keep a few angry bees at bay with your bare fists by skillfully stunning them. For me, this is one of the game's main strengths: because the upgrades are randomly distributed throughout the level, every session is different and constantly changing.

During the run, you collect gems and gold: gold influences your high score or enables you to achieve the story goal of reaching the afterlife. Gems, on the other hand, are needed for meta-progression and remain even after death. They can be used to unlock permanent power-up cards, such as double quest rewards, faster running or longer upgrade duration (that's also the 3 cards I recommend getting first). Something I didn't realize right away: these cards can also be sold again. This is important because different characters require different upgrades, and some can get in the way of completing daily challenges.

The entire game loop is exactly my kind of thing: Short, focused runs through an irresistibly charming pixel world that are challenging but fair, powered by a steady stream of varied upgrades that are sometimes deeply satisfying to unleash. And every now and then, you're reminded of your humble beginnings, when you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a level, unarmed, running for your life.

Finally, I just have to say that I really love the sound effects. The choice of sounds, the echo, and even their sometimes exaggerated length: it's so much fun.

I participated in the closed beta and therefore received the game for free. 10/10 would test again.

The UI is very confusing to me. Sometimes you have to left-click, sometimes you have to right-click, and sometimes you have to hold down the left mouse button. It's never clear what the correction option is. There are also buttons that are underlined, but the underline is only really visible when you hover the mouse over it. I couldn't even start the game easily on the first screen. There's also dragging, but the game doesn't tell you if you can drag an item into a character slot or not. You just have to try.

Just try for yourself: At the party setup screen try to select your crew. Is a double click needed? A drag? A click?

Some modal windows can be closed by pressing X in the top right, some have an exit button in the top left.

There are no tooltips to help you. If there are, they don't really explain stuff.

Then you have to use the keyboard to steer the cart, but sometimes it drives by itself? You don't need the keyboard to choose the path of the cart, but a mouse click (or maybe a mouse-hold click).

The toolbar at the bottom is the worst. Some icons require a right click, some a left click. Some change the view, some open a modal on top of the views and cannot be closed unless you remember which icon opened it.

I tried to enjoy the game, but the unintuitive UI and keyboard requirements just straight killed it for me.
