Many people have complained that the gameplay changes in this version (hex tiles, one unit per tile, etc.) make it too different from the other Civ games and thus no longer fun. However, I actually like the fact that it's different, because I thought the earlier Civ games dragged on too long and got too complicated, and the changes helped resolve those issues. I no longer have to spend 20 minutes moving massive armies around just to complete a single turn, and I no longer have to waste production and gold building and upgrading the many units I must garrison in my cities. It's also a relief that corruption no longer makes everything painfully slow when I build cities "too far" from my capitol; Civ V allows you to build a geographically spread-out empire if you want, as long as you don't induce unhappiness by building too many cities. As a result, gameplay feels more fun and less like a chore even into the later stages of the game. I have actually won a single-player game in Civ V, something I've never managed to do in Civ II, III, and IV because I either lost or gave up before I could grind my way to victory.

The one major downside to this game is the numerous bugs in multiplayer. The most game-breaking is the fact that AI civilizations in multiplayer games lose all ability to initiate diplomacy, despite being very diplomatically active in the single-player game. This means you no longer get any information as to whether an AI is angry with you, could offer you a lucrative trade deal, or would declare war on a mutual enemy if you agreed to help them. As a result, if you have fewer than 4 friends who want to play multiplayer Civ V with you, you must resort to trying to read the AIs' minds and aggressively attacking them if it seems like they might want to attack you.

Note: I bought this with the Brave New World expansion, and have never played the "stock" game.

An addicitvely fun team combat game that doesn't fall into the cliches of the standard war shooter. Like most Valve games, it has a lot of personality and a well-crafted visual style. Most importantly, however, it allows you to wear a fez in game if you play the Spy. And fezzes are cool.
