The Greedy Grinner originates from the Metal Wolf Chaos XD-stream on August 16th 2019. During the stream, the angle of Jerma's facecam made it appear as if Jerma possessed a comically large chin during one of his regular bouts of absolute insanity. A screenshot of the face was linked to Jerma, causing him to spiral into a state of denial that the screenshot was real and not edited, establishing the face as a new meme. It was later nominated at the JermAwards 2019 for the category Worst Face.

During the original stream, Jerma had the idea of turning the screenshot into a custom Hearthstone card labeled as "Greedy Grinner". Someone in Chat actually did, and the ensuing bit stemming from Jerma's attempt to create a custom voice line for the card laid the groundwork for the Greedy Grinner's personality.
