It's not the perfect game that the goty awards would have you believe, but it's still an incredible work of art who's Devs deserve a lot of credit for considering they combined 3 things I usually can't stand (turn based rpgs, rhythm games, and French people)

If you're going to play Triple A open world slop, you might as well play high quality slop like this.

At it's core this game isn't anything too special. It's an open world action-adventure with pretty good combat and stealth, and the usual massive slog of district-conquering and collectables. What set's this game apart is it's gorgeous aesthetic style and it's engaging feudal Japan setting. The story is decent with characters you can get fairly invested in, even if the overarching plot is pretty predictable. The pace is killed a fair bit by how padded the open world is, plus there's so many unnecessary pauses in the game with overly long, un-skippable transitions between gameplay, as well as the usual overly long travel time during missions listening to characters waffle while you ride a horse.

The combat and stealth mechanics are good enough to keep you hooked in between the boring bits, and on hard difficulty at least I think there's a nice sweet spot of challenge hit while still being a pretty casual time. You get given a lot of wacky weapons and tools of which many of them you'll just forget to use, when Kunais and Smoke bombs will basically give you a free win in any messy circumstance. But the simple dodge and parry sword-fighting is fun enough and the stealth is pretty fair and forgiving, perhaps too easy even, but that's much better than it being unfair and frustrating like in some stealth games.

A recommend if you're looking for something that just ticked all the boxes on the "open world action-adventure" and a unique, beautiful style paired with perfectly passable gameplay sounds like enough for you. Not exactly the most interesting or unique experience in gaming, but it's like if Ubisoft games were actually good.

Really appreciate it when a game has the decency to suck ♥♥♥♥ from the first minute so I know to refund it asap!

Unplayable due to how clunky the controls are. Playing other stealth games like Dishonored has absolutely killed any interest I had in Splinter Cell. Plenty of crashes, bugs, bad audio, and enough seen of the story to know that this is a kind of game that doesn't get better after a few hours.

Dont give these guys any money.

This game is such an amazing idea; flawed in execution, but with my severe ship 'tism I still get a lot of enjoyment out of the whole build ships -> go fight wars -> build your economy and get new ship parts -> build ships gameplay loop of the campaign. It's engaging enough that I can just about get through the god awful UI, bugs and clunky design.

Though the way the devs have treated the game and the community as a whole leaves a massive sour taste in my mouth. The fact that you need a mod to fix most the issues says it all really.

I really hope this game can get turned around and have the QoL and UI improvements and depth it needs to become truly fantastic but with the current track record I think that's a pipe dream. Such a shame for a really cool concept that I still have alot of fun with.

Got 15 minutes through this game. Feels like complete ass to play from the first minute. Can't say more tbh.

This is the dirtiest I've ever felt giving a game a thumbs down, but what the hell. It's got a 97% Positive rating so I'm sure it can survive me explaining all the niggling issues that finally made me realise I just couldn't bother to finish it.

Firstly the gameplay. Yeah, the core combat system of attacking, dodging and parrying to the beat is very well executed, especially with how the game-world animates to the beat as well. Your hits feel powerful and combos feel satisfying. But a good handful of combat encounters really threw all this under the bus for me. Maybe it's just a skill issue, but I constantly find myself getting hit by attacks that were winding up miles away out of sight. Sure, the answer to this might be just "be more cautious and slow and position yourself to always see every enemy" but here's the thing... that completely ruins the fun of the combat! It's at its best when you can just dive into the middle and go ham, and having to skirt around the edge of the encounter map keeping an eye on one of eight enemies waiting for a gap in their attacks completely kills the pacing for me. I hate having to constantly break up combo's to parry as well, considering the Jam Beat at the end gives you such an irresistible urge to finish up.
I feel like the issues could have been at least part fixed with more camera settings to allow a wider camera angle.

That's another issue for me, pacing in general. Apart from the combat issues for me, advancing through the game world in between combats just feels like a chore more than anything else. Granted you're soaking in some amazing visual and sound design, but Chai's movement is unsatisfyingly slow, and the rhythm mini games to use Peppermint's/Macron's/Corsica's traversal gimmicks just kills the pacing even more for me, especially if you're being lazy and ♥♥♥♥ it up one time.

I could have stomached these issues if the story kept me invested enough to at least get me through to the end, but sadly not. It's just not interesting for me at all, and it's worsened by the fact that Chai is one of the most annoying protagonists I've controlled in a video game. It's a shame because all the side characters are cool enough, but having to be tied to this little ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is like babysitting a problem child.

So yeah, I'm going to leave a rare bad review for this game. Honestly, if it wasn't so highly rated by the vast majority of people, I might have made it a thumbs up with the caveat that I found many flaws with the game, considering it's visual design, core gameplay design and just general vibes are so good. Loads of people will enjoy the hell out of this game. Sadly, I'm not one of them. If I want a rhythm-action game that feels more satisfying I'd personally play BPM Bullets Per Minute first.

Mehhhhhhh. Recommended but only if on good sale.

If you wanted a story-heavy GTA but with no sandbox element here you go, but personally I'd easily pick GTA 4 over this for its story. It had good bits but overall was whatever for me. Gameplay is solid but again nothing special - third person cover shooting with some bad stealth mechanics thrown in.

Full price is a complete rip off for this when it can be easily be completed under 10 hours. It's good enough for a sale buy though.

An illegally high amount of anime cringe is contained in this game's story and dialogue but the pure fun shooter/puzzle/speedrun gameplay makes it more than worth it. Plus all the cringe is forgiven with the presence of Mikey. I love you cat bro.

Solid 8/10 repeating entire boss fights after making 1 small mistake is annoying and slogging to find gifts for the story nonsense got too old for me to bother, but otherwise gameplay is flawless and dialogue is 50/50 bad and so bad its good.
