Oxygen is included in the starting area. It won't last long though.

Eventually you'll be able to produce oxygen out of your duplicants' piss sustainably and ranch critters to evolve them into meat. Setup overcomplicated constructions that show the middlefinger to the very law of conservation. Create torture chambers for dupes to live in forever. This is a sandbox that is only limited by your imagination and immense amount of patience. Once you've managed to survive, that is.

A very straightforward blend of tower defense and FPS with roguelike elements, ASTROSWARM pits you against your former zombified astronaut compatriots where your goal is to kill enough of them then survive for the take off. In this game, you have two resources: metals to build and upgrade your buildings, and exp for getting weapons and "upgrading" yourself. Spending those resources properly is the key for your long term survival. Aside from your lonesome, you'll have the aid of your own machines in your quest of exterminating those zombified astronauts.

In addition to the roguelike upgrades you can buy during an ongoing mission, there are also permanent upgrades you can get before starting a mission which can be a major game changer, as well as unlocking more weapons and buildings variants as you proceed. The early games when you basically start with nothing are a tad problematic, and you'll certainly fail a few tries until you've got enough perma upgrades (and experience with the game) to bounce back.

The game also have optional modifiers which you can toggle as you please to provide yourself more challenges, changes to suit your particular playstyle or merely cosmetics. Want to go pure gun blazing instead of babysitting your buildings? Gunslinger is the perk you're looking for. If you prefer tower defense, Engineer will be your friend. Yes, I'm well aware of TF2 references there (afterall, part of inspiration of this game is the MvM gamemode in TF2 when playing as Engi).

Note that when boomer shooter is mentioned here, it's not just the art style. If you really want that fast paced action, you sure as hell can as the shooting mechanic and movement really land itself closely to the recent DOOM games (aside from having to reload for most of the weapons).

All in all, I had my share of fun out of this game. If horde survival mixing with tower defense, boomer shooter and roguelike elements is your thing, give this game a try.

Haven't spent too much time with this version, but here are my current thoughts:
  • P2W weapons are now just skins of the original base weapons. Glad those terrible items are gone.
  • Gun balances are still iffy. Pointman with MP7 can spray down opponents all day.
  • Lots of contents are still missing from the original (not as bad as AVA Dog Tag level).
  • Weapon names are now fictional like with Counter-Strike (either some letters replaced, or just use the old P2W skin name, like Desmodus for AKS-74U), probably to avoid some weird gun manufacturer copyrights.
  • No more low res textures. I still remember back in the day when they rolled out a patch that massively downgraded the graphics by removing all high-res textures from the game to save some HDD space while barely did anything to improve FPS.
  • No custom rooms at the moment.
  • No PVE modes for now (Prison Break, Escape, Rescue, Lockdown, Death Valley, Battle Gears, various Co-op maps like Train, Overrider)

Considering pretty much all of the old content are still present in the game files (they probably can't remove them without causing some cascading issues), it's probably only taking time until they re-enable them. Only time will tell.

Also never play this game in Windowed mode (at least when you're in a match). You'll get freezing and shuttering at the worst possible moment.

P/S: browse the old startup bik video in game files for a little ijji nostalgia.

I think I die more to the monsters and heat than starvation.

Recommended to play with friends assuming you have any.

Still dying to monsters more than starvation.

Also no one to play with hah hah.

After all the updates, still dying to more weird monsters than starvation.

Almost 10 years and the game is still going, though not as strong as it used to be. The MyM update screwed over the pub PvP play a lot.

Still, there's no unique game like TF2 so I still find myself going back to this game again... only to play MvM with friends. My 2Fort base has long since collapsed.

Anyway, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ original review below:

Now I only play MVM and if I ever play PvP, 2fort is my base. If you see a guy keep accusing everyone of being a Spy, that'd be me.

As for MVM, if you play with ze pubs, chances are you have to follow ze "meta" 9.9/10 times, unless you have absurdly high amount of tours (which I have because hats) that grants you 90% immunity to votekick and 70% chance of lower tour players listen to you like an MVM guru. You'd probably have more fun when you have a full team to **** around in whatever way you guys want.

Ah whatever, just buy this game. Nevermind, it's F2P too so save whatever money you have for keys etc. then buy more hats. Or if you're interested in killing ze machines and becoming an MVM guru, grab more Tour of Duty tickets. Don't spend money on anything else, or do, that's your choice.
